  • WSTM NBC 3's Matt Mulcahy digs deeper into The Map of 1919 that may be the first government record to associate redlining and race in Syracuse, NY.
Matt unearthed The Map of 1919 in the National Archives and was struck by the handwritten ethnic labels drawn over various color coded neighborhoods in the growing City of Syracuse.
The century old map is an historical find and a precursor to the Federal government maps of the HOLC program of the 1930's that redlined neighborhoods to keep groups of people from federal home lending programs. The segregation that was underway at the start of the 20th century is still influencing Syracuse and Onondaga County today.
