  • Max Verstappen will receive a stiff penalty this season that will affect Red Bull
    -----------------
Max Verstappen faces a potentially stiff penalty this season due to problems with his power unit. Red Bull has recalled the Dutchman's RB20 engine during the Canadian Grand Prix for an inspection at Honda's headquarters in Sakura, Japan. According to Motorsport, it is expected that the internal combustion engine cannot be salvaged, which will force Verstappen to use his fifth power unit.
The use of a fifth power unit carries an automatic 10-place grid penalty, a situation that comes at a critical time for Red Bull, which is in an intense fight for the drivers' and constructors' championships. Red Bull boss Christian Horner acknowledged the difficulty of the situation and mentioned that it is inevitable that the team will have to change engines at some point in the near future.
"We would have to see how it plays out over the next few races, but I think it's inevitable that we will have to change engines at some point," Horner mentioned.
Red Bull has experience dealing with grid penalties and has proven its ability to win races despite these penalties. For example, Verstappen has been penalized at the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps in the last two seasons, winning on both occasions despite starting from disadvantageous positions (P6 last year and P14 in 2022).
This situation adds a new challenge for Red Bull and Verstappen, who will have to employ smart strategies to mitigate the impact of the penalty and maintain their competitiveness in the fight for the championships.
