Joe Mucheru opens up on his tenure as a Cabinet Secretary and life after losing the ministerial flag

  • He was one of the influential members of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Cabinet. For seven years, he took charge of the Broadcasting and ICT ministry, and in the run up to the august 9th general election, actively participated in the state house succession race.
During the transition period from Kenyatta’s administration to President William Ruto, Mucheru and his cabinet colleagues had to contend with three cabinet meetings with a man, whose presidential candidature they vehemently opposed.

I messaged this guy about an important project I wanted to see implemented in the country. He responded saying he'll speak to other cabinet secretaries about it. Sure enough, the project is ongoing, across the *entire* country. Unlike most people who were only complaining, gossiping and speculating about inane issues (like here: body language, unknowable internal thoughts, age etc), I participated in providing solutions for my country and actively engaging stakeholders. For another project, he told me he couldn't interfere in another ministry, which I completely understood

The challenge with Kenyan media is not asking key questions. The interviewer is asking about irrelevant issues - friends, catch-ups,missing this and that instead of doing research on his tenure - state of ICT in Kenya visavas the region, challenges of IT training.

Somethings it is good just to understand what drive a person and make him not conform to the status quo. I liked how he repeated “pressure” a lot. The job stretched his capability but he delivered on it and he is definitely not a politician with hidden agenda or a string of corrupt dealing. Clean CS!

This cabinet had very good chemistry. They became genuine friends outside work. They were professionals/technocrats, not career politicians, and took pay cuts -- Mucheru himself was a big tech entrepreneur behind a well-known company in Africa. I wish Mucheru focused much more on local startups rather than global tech giants though
