Welcome to my channel! This is a music reaction channel. For the longest time, I've loved creating content on the internet. I started off with a gaming channel right here on CZcams, which eventually turned into a Twitch gaming channel, but as time has gone on I've evolved into doing other things on CZcams. For years now I've wanted to create a music channel on CZcams, and recently just figured "why not?", so it’s time to give this a go! Give me any suggestion you have for music reactions, and I will do my best to get around to them. As music has fallen further out of my life, I figured this would be a great time to get reintroduced to music.
If you enjoy this video and my reactions make sure you subscribe to the channel, like the video and comment down below which video you would like to see me react to next.
This is a reaction video used to educate and give my feedback on the song and artists.

Fun fact: Many folks recognized Dan Aykroyd as a comic actor, however, Dan IS indeed a musician. During his early tenure as an SNL cast member, he along w John Belushi (RIP) formed a mythical musical duo aka The Blues Brothers. The two actually sang and played harmonica in their stage act.

Everybody should hold Harry Belafonte's (bell-a-FON-tee) memory deep in their hearts. He died last April at age 96 after a lifetime of singing, acting, and fighting passionately for civil rights around the globe. He was a close confidant of Rev. Martin Luther King during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, and he helped organize the 1963 Great March on Washington, and many other demonstrations and activities. In this video he sang in the chorus in the back row standing next to Dan Aykroyd.

Great song, great artists. It was HUGE! I just wish The Pointer Sisters had a solo part. They are such a quintessential R&B/ Pop group with a string of hits in the 70s and 80s. They would be a good group to get a taste of w "Fire", "Slow Hand", and "I'm So Excited" and their early funk hit "Yes We Can Can" to get started.
Harry Belafonte btw is a GIANT among actors for movies he made in the 50s and was also a singer. You have certainly heard parts of the Banana Song with it's famous "Day-O". He was also a civil rights activist and humanitarian who worked with Martin Luthor King. He experienced a great deal of discrimination in NYC because he was Black, even after he was famous. He has won Grammy's, Emmy's, and a Tony Award and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as an early influencer.

The song features an all star cast of 23 females, including: Anastacia, Angelique Kidjo, Beth Gibbons, Beth Orton, Beverley Knight, Bonnie Raitt, Celine Dion, Dido, Faith Hill, Fergie, Gladys Knight, Isobel Campbell, Joss Stone, K.D. Lang, KT Tunstall, Madonna, Martha Wainwright, Melissa Etheridge, Pink, Sarah McLachlan, Shakira, Shingai Shoniwa, Sugababes. Madonna does not only feature in the chorus, she actually sings a whole verse. Please check out this powerful song/ video. ❤

First of all, just have to point out that when you have a collection of some of the greatest singer-songwriters on the planet, why on Earth would they leave it up to some record label suit to shell out songwriting duties. C'mon Shawn! LOL They wouldn't be caught dead, on principle alone.
Great seeing this performance again. Must have been shown on MTV every 5 minutes back in the day. Literally a who's who of every top performer in America in 1985. And how young and vibrant they all look. 😢

These concerts were a REALLY big deal around the world and this song became a massive hit. When Bruce Springsteen steps up it still gives me the shivers. To pull all these stars together with all their schedules was a near miracle.
You may wonder why Phil Collins is not part of this recording. He was certainly committed to the cause of raising money for starving Ethiopia. He was the only star to participate in both the London and Philadelphia concerts on the same day! (flew on the Concorde jet). By the time this song was recorded (nearly 8am the next day) Collins had already crashed and could not stay to play on the song, although he had planned to. 'We Are the World' was inspired by Band Aid's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" (Collins was on that tune however).
Two side notes (from this Collins fanboy, lol): One of the main organizers, Bob Geldof, appears on Phil Collins' episode in 1988 of 'This Is Your Life' (BBC). It is a good show and very funny with Robert Plant hilarious. Quincy Jones, the song's musical director, is a famous jazz writer/performer/producer who directed Phil Collins Big Band at the 40th Montreux Jazz Festival 1996.
    Small World.

Shawn Salvadori, After the U.K and the U.S had singers get together and do as you pointed out during your research, there was also a bunch of other countries that had singers who did the same thing. The country that I know that did so right after the U.S was Canada, the band was called 'Northern Lights' and the song is called "Tears Are Not Enough". In the original writhing and singing of that song they have the countries name in it but in the updated version they have taken out that part to make it have more of a world wide feel. It is also mostly sang in English but does have a few singers who do a small part in French.
Another one that I have just recently come across, thanks to it being pointed out to me, that is from Germany and serves the same purpose, but they, in their band called 'Band for Africa', had singers from Germany and a few of the countries that border it. The song is called "Nackt im Wind" or in english "Naked in the Wind" and is sang in German.

A boatload of cash was raised, over 100 million folks watched live. Harry Belafonte (back row, next to Dan Aykroyd) had the idea & brought it to Quincy Jones. Prince was turned away because he wanted a guitar solo and poor John Denver also was turned away for not being cool enough.

There is a dvd of before this bit, explains a bit. Harry Belafonte was there and they did somethng for him too. Quincy Jones told them to leave their egos at the door, some bits were done to fill it out, the next day, Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Wonder are in different clothes for that. Bob Dylan was a successful musical protester, said you don't want me (he sings in an unusual style) but yes they did, and folks say who is he? Every time I see it, my thought is "How do you have Smokey Robinson in the room and not give him a solo?" The pairing of Stevie and Bruce is the high point, along with Ray Charles.
Btw, you should check out the version of Do They Know It's Christmas from the Live Aid show. Much more star power than the original studio version.

Randy Jackson is Michael Jackson's brother, not Randy Jackson from American Idol, different Randy. Also, in the video was Latoya and Marlon Jackson as well .The Pointers sisters a group of 4 sisters from Okland ,California. Some of their most recognizable hit songs are 🎶 Jump, I'm so excited, Neutron Dance, Slow Hand, Fire. Ruth is the only surviving sister alive currently. All of these musician were huge back in the 80's no filters and auto tunes were used, and they could actually sing.

    Another fun fact.
Before this, producer Quincy Jones was working with Donna Summer on her 'State of Independence' single when he realised he needed some backing singers for her song. So he scouted the studio and got Lionel Richie, Dionne Warwick, Michael Jackson, Brenda Russell, Christopher Cross, Dyan Cannon, James Ingram, Kenny Loggins and Stevie Wonder to do it for him. He was so impressed with the sound that he asked them to return at a later date for a charity song that he had been asked to produce. Most of those that were free turned up bringing others with them to make this single.

It was the best-selling single of 1985 and was the best-selling single of the entire decade of the 1980s. It is the eighth best-selling physical single of all time.

Harry Belfonte was one of the chorus members in this song as well. People my age and younger probably know him for the "Banana Boat Song" or basically the two main songs from Beetlejuice.
And Dan is indeed a musician! He still occasionally performs as a member of the Blues Brothers along with his former bandmate's brother, Jim Belushi.

This was actually redone with present day artists but I thought it was a poor excuse. For one the artists they used were not of the same caliber as these legends were, even when it was being filmed. Present day artists did it to boost their careers and I'm assuming getting paid, back then they already had legendary status so no one needed any career help and NO ONE got paid. Just try even suggesting that today.

I'm glad you mentioned that you DON'T recognize some of the singers, because then I can give you a link to the version WITH the main singer/solist names: czcams.com/video/G4xQBrrTp4s/video.html . Enjoy !!!
However, please keep in mind that many of the background singers weren't identified even in that video, but you have The Pointer Sisters (Anita, June and Ruth), Bette Midler, Harry Belafonte, the rest of the Jackson family (including Jackie, La Toya, Marlon, Randy [NOT the American Idol judge] and Tito), Lindsey Buckingham, John Oates (the 2nd half of Hall and Oates), Sheila E., Waylon Jennings, Jeffrey Osborne and Smokey Robinson and more.
I'm not sure what article you were looking at, but here's a link to the Wikipedia article about it, which goes into great depth: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Are_the_World .
