Oh my gosh, Kim - about the online book vendor frustrations - YES!! I agree 100% with you. This drives me nuts. For those of us who are book lovers, especially classics, the edition really matters! Thank you for mentioning this!
Totally agree about the picture and description matching the book you are ordering. I’ve had the same thing happen and it’s so frustrating. 😊💙
Kim, you are so persuasive! Just downloaded Serkis's audio of the LOTR from the library. I'm about to embark on a 7 or 8 hour drive, and had planned to listen to another book. But you've swayed me! Happy Monday!
I listened to The Hobbit last month, which was also narrated by Andy Serkis. Such a fantastic listen! I’m so thrilled to learn that he does TLOTR too. I’ll definitely add that to my TBR. And the Dead Girls is on my TBR as well. Excited to hear your thoughts!
Aw, thanks for the shoutout! I am clearly very behind in my videos, so I only got to this today.
A week with LOTR is a wonderful reading week! I was just telling my "monkey assistant" about the Lord of the Rings the other day...we looked at the map in the book and talked about the elves and hobbits and wizards. I'm priming him for a buddy read with me someday...I have a few years to wait! The used bookstore bait and switch just happened to me too! It was an order of six books, and I think five of them were versions I didn't expect. So frustrating.
Monkey assistant readalong sounds awesome! I think they would love The Hobbit. 🥰 Extremely frustrating book order. Unbelievable! 😡
I enjoy the tone of your presentations.. so so natural and loose. Much appreciated 😊 xotk
Thank you! 😊
Everytime you show that beautiful copy of Middlemarch I'm jealous! Also jealous of the read-a-long; the timing just doesn't work for me right now. I also recently received a battered mass market paperback instead of an edition I carefully selected and the vendor refunded me. It's worth a shot!
I’ve definitely contacted vendors in the past and received refunds or credit. This one was so cheap I just went with it. Oh well.
Online purchase: Cryptonomicon (Neal Stephenson). Described as *new*. It was beat up.
I just picked up The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels (Janice Hallett) North Woods (Daniel Mason) , Before We Were Innocent (Ella Berman) and The Night Alphabet (Joelle Taylor).
It was a lousy 2 weeks so I needed something silly and fun and I'm reading Garlic and the Vampire (Bree Paulsen) and Girl Juice (Benji Nate).
Love the channel.
Condition descriptions are so subjective. Like new means so many things online. And thank you so much! ☺️
For your upcoming audiobook series, may I recommend Erasure by Percival Everett. It is narrated by Shawn Crisden and is marvelous. A perfect example of a book I’m not sure I could have read any other way. Audiobook for the win!
I have that in print also! 😊
OFOTCN was one I enjoyed in my youth and have read several times. I should make a list of those types. I bet they would say something about my personality.
Grapes of Wrath and Middlemarch and Tolkien....sounds like a great reading month. I listened to an abridged book on tape of Paradise several years ago and remember nothing but that brutal fist sentence. Clearly that was the wrong format for that book.
I started to listen to it and Morrison narrated. But it lost me very quickly. It’s far better in print.
I have always wanted to read JRR Tolkien but I have started and stopped several times. Maybe audiobook is the way to go. I only started listening to audiobooks a couple of years ago b/c I thought I was a diehard physical book person. I now love audiobooks and my Kindle. I'm currently listening to Beyond the Wand by Tom Felton and it's fantastic! Looking forward to this audiobook content.
I have the Felton book on my kindle. 😊
Hi Kim, Kelly from books I’m not reading, has created a tag from Melinda‘s video. I really enjoyed her Answers. I read tenants of Wildfell Hall two years ago and really enjoyed it along with Agnes Grey, they’re very different books, but I like them both. Aloha
I saw Kelly’s tag also. I’m considering doing it myself. 😊
I''m looking forward to your audiobook series. I listen to at least half of my reads these days. I'm not a LOTR fan! What? Sorry, but do intend to give them a try on audio one day. I can get through books on audio that I would never get through reading the actual book- how I finished Moby Dick for intstance.
Moby Dick would be great on audio!
I’ve tried audio books a few times but 10 minutes into the book, my mind has wandered to so many places that I have no idea what’s going on! Is there a “fix” for this?
Nonfiction works much better for me or classics I’ve already read. I can’t read new fiction on audio. I much prefer print. But usually it just takes practice. 😊
I have the same issue. Either my mind wanders, or it puts me to sleep. It could be an excellent book, not boring if read on paper, but something about human narration often acts like a lilting lullaby on my brain.
Thanks, Kim. I’m so excited about this Middlemarch read-along! (I’m not so sure about Discord, though. Hope I can make more sense of that!) I’m also really struggling with the font size in both of the editions I own. Ugh! I think I’m going to get that Fellowship of the Ring audiobook on your recommendation. Thanks for another thoughtful video.
Discord was weird for me at first too. I played around with it for a while and it’s not too bad.
@@MIDDLEoftheBookMARCH I will persist. 👍🏼😊
I’m annoyed whenever a book comes in that doesn’t match the description. If it’s vendor error usually they will make amends. But sometimes I’ve ordered the wrong book. 😂
Been there done that. 🤣
I hate when you don’t receive the advertised book from online sellers! 😡
I read "Paradise" last month. It is a very good book, but not my favorite Morrison. It was a 4 star read for me.
I don’t think it will be my highest either. It would be hard to beat Beloved.
That is frustrating when you're sent a used book that's a different publication than the one listed. Not all book versions are equal.
Exactly!👍
I think I'm the only one in the world who HATES how Andy Serkis narrates LOTR. My kids and I listened to the Hobbit narrated by him and I didn't love it. Felt he got too caught up in performing as a voice actor and lost the flow of the sentence structure. My kids and I are reading Fellowship now and when we were driving we decided to cue up the audio book. We were on the Tom Bombadil chapters and it was just tooooo over the top. My kids even wanted to re-read the chapters ourselves because they couldn't follow the story behind his performance. lol for my kids to want to go back and re-read they must have really hated it too!! But just us I guess. I only ever hear positive reviews of his narration.
