  • This video is a long-time coming! I wanted to cover some common pitfalls and advice for a more musical study of the scale in this one, so I hope you find this helpful! Will cover more in-depth harmonic applications for next week's video.

Nice work! It's always referenced, but rarely explored (in a lesson context). Talking about getting the "sound" of melodic minor under your fingers, before diving into its harmonic applications is an awesome primer, and great for all scales. Given me a lot to go and work on :)

Thanks so much! I really think that's an essential part of getting into utilising a sound first. Theory is important, but we do need to get inside the sound first (so to speak), otherwise there's little to no application. Have fun working on this stuff!

Nice video, learned a lot. Could you tell me a little more about the idea of melodic cells? Are there some resources you recommend I check out to learn more about that?

Glad to hear you got plenty out of this video. The idea is to take a small phrase and move it diatonically through the scale. You can come up with these on your own, or take inspiration from recording that you enjoy where the "cell" is deliberately melodic minor (or whatever scale you're working on in that given moment). Hope this helps!

One thing: When I'm playing this scale ... there's an area or "forbiden" sequence where the sound does'nt fit ... it's awkward ... so I end up playing a minor natural scale ... to get a pleasant detour ... the problem is I'm not aware where is that wierd area ... backward ... forward ... ? ..

Sorry it took me so long to get to this. This is a hard one to address over a message, but if it's the 6 7 1 portion of the scale, this just naturally takes some getting used to. Try and find musical examples of it in music you listen to, and that can help contextualise things for you.

Hi! Cool video. But I'm still confused. My problem is how I can use this scale. I can memorize the pattern, yeah, sure. But when I try to use it. It sounds like, meh, crap. LOL. Unlike the major and pentatonic. When it's in the Key of C, yeah, sure. But I don't know how to utilize this scale. Like, what if the chord progression is in the key of C? I'm so confused.
Thank you to anyone that can help me!

It comes down to familiarity and understanding what harmonic situations work best. I did an applications video not too long after this one that may clarify things a little further!
