DINGHY ACCIDENT in Barbuda

- Ooooh Barbuda, how we had been longing for you. After a month of staying at the marina in Jolly Harbor, Antigua, we finally put our computers behind to take a sail to the nearby island of Barbuda, which we had been trying to get to in weeks.
After a glorious sail to Princess Diana Beach, we finally get to enjoy our little corner of paradise. Our trip to Barbuda ends up being an expensive one though, after a dinghy accident leaves us with a salty bill!

lobster and a BBQ with friends, it is something that many people all over the planet can't even imagine. Thanks for letting the little people know who you are. God does!
@Ryan. We realy loved your technical interventions and your solo Atl. crossing has the highest views of your channel.... Please continue Ryan...
Sophie, you are a real hoot . . . . !! Comprende? The view when you fell was . . . interesting.
Lucky insurance claim. Ryan for the win. Accidents happen.
So glad that all is well, insurance covered your kit and you have new shiny toys. That said Sophie, its only stuff! Much more important is your safety and that of your shipmates; so many times its those night-time dinghy trips that can ruin days at sea- or worse. Please can you guys remember all of the care that you take when at sea, use life jackets and plan those short trips just as carefully? We need you to stay safe.
We’re all human and we all make mistakes. I enjoyed your video
we love you Sophie, Ryan too, of course.
No bashing,,,,lifes too short..got nothing but love :)
THANK YOU for sharing your mistakes. I need to prepare like that! I am in charge of insurance too. Heidi
My sweet girly... No hate here... I'm sure you've beaten yourself up enough... Great mistakes create great lessons beautiful gifts....! By the way the still bread.... Brilliant will be doing that for sure... Thanks for sharing your lives with us grateful for the opportunity to learn from you both ✌🏼💗😊❣️
Excellent
Great Video !
If you're ever searching for dry bags, the company Overboard makes backpack dry bags for a lot of performance and offshore racing. Just a suggestion, love to content!
We miss you too xx / Jodi and Simon (sailingintothemystic)
I wish Pantaneus could still write in the USA. My boat used to be covered by them. Great coverage.
Yeah, boat insurance in the US is such a mess.... that's why we'll continue to have our boat flagged in Sweden!
Luv ya Sophie
I have missed you to
Anyone would make such honest mistakes after imbibing that GIANT personal cocktail! You’re so funny
LOL! :D To be fair, I only had very little of that giant glass ;) I don't think my liver would have survived this...
Fun content :) Greetings from Ibiza!
Sophie, Sophie, what more can I say. We get insurance for times like this.
Bash? Hate? No, no, no dear Sophie. You see, your main squeeze is a Hawkeye -- thus as long as you're tight with Ryan never in the eyes of this fellow Hawkeye can you ever do wrong.
Sorry about your mishap. (And congrats on the terrific new camera!) There's something I've noticed a lot while learning how to sail and chartering boats with other sailors. Most other sailors take great relish in giving people like me (over prepared nerds) endless hassles about being prepared. "Why did you bring hiking boots? All you need is flip-flops; It's just a short climb..." up through cactus and ragged volcanic rock (glass). "Why do you always bring so much stuff?" "I know what _they say_ (USCG, death statistics) but you really don't need a PFD..." ( You guys have already covered this! Kudos to you both!) A lot of it can be left in the dinghy, or it's just in a backpack (mine is a Sea To Summit roll top dry bag. I put my dry bags in dry bags. But of course I've gotten my camera gear wet -- we are after all using it, not just storing it.) These hasslers are not few, they are ubiquitous. Like mean girls and bullies in high school -- as though there's a greater risk of harm in sailing from being too nerdy than from being unprepared.
I once jumped in the water for a dive with $3,000 of camera and lens safely tucked away on the boat. When I came up the tide and wind had changed, the high side became the low side, and suddenly my camera was under water. Lesson learned (I hope).
We are all human. Give yourself the Grace of forgiveness to self. It was not intentional and thank Ryan for planning ahead.🥰
Sophie thats why they put rubbers on pencils because we all make mistakes. Love the transparency, great video.
Whoa! Ya lucked out losing yer Kit…but covered with Insurance😜 Yer right, at least nobody got hurt👍 Continue to Stay Safe & Enjoy😎
The sailing community looks great, lots of camaraderie, saw you on Atticus's video, nice to see my favorite sailing channels together.
That's awesome! :) Yes it was a really good time meeting those guys. We wish we could have hang out longer!
Something about Rum... Perhaps Sophie will enlighten us, again. This time shifting of CZcamsrs, leads me to think they live multiple lives simultaneously and that's without any of than Rum thingy.
Fun week for Ryan and Sophie. Saw you guys featured in an Insider article and in an Atticus video. Good stuff and hope you're both having a great summer.
Very fun week indeed! We even reached peak celebrity when tabloids found us worthy of trash-talking 😂😂😂 Google “Daily Mail Ryan and Sophie” for some glorious garbage 😆
@@RyanSophieSailing Okay, the Daily Mail comments were a bit frustrating to read, but on the plus side there were some great photos in the article. Don't mind the naysayers who contribute nothing.
If your cameras could fit in large plastic jars, you could then trap the jars in a stringbag. One waterproof floating object. Attach an MPI strobe if you embark at night. It must be hard to shop for good 12 volt fans, for below deck.
Perhaps you can do a review of dry bags in the future.
Style points… 10 for most graceful Face-plant on CZcams in 2022!
I liked the rum punch! There will always be a new camera. Live your life.
Ship happens!
Lovely video!!! It’s always refreshing to watch your contents ❤️❤️❤️ please please please be careful and keep safe muah muah
It has been a rough and intense few weeks for you guys so it's great to hear you both laughing and screaming while having fun out there (and falling over while beaching the dingey 😂😂).
Great channel guys ❤️
Glad it all worked out for you. Like most people I don't like paying insurance premiums, but if you ever need it you're sure glad you have it.
Wow! So brave of you to share your vulnerability. Accidents are just that... accidents. And they happen to everyone. You are entirely right: this is the purpose of insurance. Globally there seems to be this idea that it's shameful to claim from your insurer. No, I am sure anyone from that company watching would feel proud. Because they provided a great service; you were able to share your adventures. Thanks for another great video, and I am very happy everyone was okay in the accident.
Good story and very good advice ! Superbe!
I work in the professional light and sound industry.
The best way to travel in hostile (salt water is one of them) environments with expensive electronics are Peli cases. Yes they are expensive however they will protect gear from water, falling and even lightning.
great vid guys I enjoyed it, I've been to Antigua but never to Barbuda.
You are absolutely right, and that is what I’ll be investing in. And also… camera insurance 🙃
You beat me to it. Accept no knock offs. Real Pelican only.
@@markbernier8434 Absolutely the knock offs suck in comparison to the real Peli cases.
Right???
Another exciting moment in your life on the blue. Great vid, fantastic editing. Puts things into perspective.
As for your mishap...............
Well schitt happens.
So glad that you have insurance, I guess that's why we pay our premiums.
Fair winds U2
Aw so sorry for all your kit Sophie must have been gutting, lucky on the insurance! After years of ruining stuff I finally bought a load of drybags and now I just put everything I put in my backpack in drybags anyway (laptops etc.). If the backpack gets soaked or the coffee mug (in its drybag) leaks no longer causes me any stress.
Such bad luck with the cameras but you have been totally up front about it and am so glad the insurance paid out. We were there in January in our little yacht 'The Royal Clipper' :-) absolutely loved it.
Accidents happen….that’s boating 101. I’m happy to hear no one got hurt and about the insurance :) no criticism from me 😀
you have my full support. so that's done. thanks for the video, always enjoy your content
Hello, you have a great sailing channel. I just watched a movie I think you would really enjoy. The name of the movie is STYX. It would resonate with Ryan and his solo journey across the Atlantic. I was on a 59 North sailing in March with Nikki Henderson as captain and she related your experience with the refugees. Very moving. Keep up the good work.
Live. Ouch. Learn. Live some more. Repeat. 💯🖖
Lovely video!! I'm glad you had insurance!! I had the same kind of thing happen to me one time when I was canoeing. 🙂
What a beautiful place! So happy you had insurance. Safe travels!
Hi noticed you are using a light to light your stove in stead of the ato ignition i have just fixed mine by puting a bit of alfoil in the batery knobe works great now
Glad you had insurance. This is why I always pay for insurance on my phone. I use it a lot for photos while kayaking and I have lost three so far. It happens. The wild horses were really cool. If you are ever in the North Carolina Outer Banks they have wild horses there too. Also where the Wright brothers first flew.
Mistakes always teach the best lessons. I have a few of my own. Thankfully my best lessons to date were not recorded! 😅
Hahaha, right?! To be fair, that mistake wasn’t recorded either…. I just chose to talk about it as a reminder for others to…. Not do what I did 😇
Cheers my friends, i will make alittle postcard for the group..
SOPHIE ! ……I NEED that stick bread recipe! ….ps …big kiss to Ryan for foresight in increasing your insurance eh? Love ya 👍🇦🇺🇳🇿
Sorry for your loss ! Congrats 🎉 on the new camera 📸 equipment ! 😂
Mwah! Back to you, Sophie!
So much fun. Stay well. Stay safe!
glad everyone is ok!!!
Awesome stuff!
That was a great learning piece. Sorry you had to sacrifice your gear for us to learn, but on the bright side you can do a piece on why you chose your new equipment. Merci.
Thanks Frank! It was a tough one. Luckily, we were prepared!
Good thing you had insurance. Modern day cameras can capture excellent cinematic video, but I think it’s over kill for most situations. You got great drone shots, superb editing, wonderfully complementing music combined with good audio quality. I would personally save the mirrorless camera for B roll, and use “disposable” action cameras in combination with my phone for A roll. Unless you see wild horses on the beach, then a 70 - 200 comes in handy. But what do I know? Y’all keep it up!
Hi Sophie & Rayan, it was a nice and funny episode. We wish you the best. Christian & Ibtisame (Sailors from Dubai)
Great footage! Nice job editing and graphics are amazing, well done!
I think losing kit is up there with all the very expensive mistakes we all have made or will make at least once, if not multiple times: grounding (done that already - in my defense, I don't have a depth sounder). Hooking a mooring or anchor line (done that too). Dropping an outboard overboard. Destroying a spin or cz. Not reefing early enough. Losing something (jerry cans, fenders, pfds, freshly-caught lunch) off the deck. In a couple of years the Internet is going to be going after me for one of these too, I'm sure of it. At least you were insured! A good (if momentarily embarrassing) reminder for us all. (And p.s. anyone who says they've never sacrificed anything to Neptune is either a liar or just not experienced enough yet.)
Hahaha, thank you for the feel-good comment, you are so right 🙂 it happens to everyone! This one hurt though… but again, every time it hurts, I remember how happy I am that no one was injured, and that we had insurance for it. All is well in the end 😌
Ryan and Sophie I think you are definitely... LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE!!!!🌅👍 Another wonderful video 💖⛵
Nice video guys, sorry to hear about your camera gear. I can imagine the pain but glad the insurance covered :)
Thanks for another great video! Can you recommend a good dry bag backpack for adventuring in the tropics and on the water?
When you show your kit off maybe you can show us your shiny new dry bag 😂 😉
It’s gorgeous, you’ll have to trust me ;)
Is there a baking term for “Baking Bread On a Stick”? How long did you have to hold it over the fire/coals before it became baked? Wonder if you could get a similar result just using Pillsbury Biscuit Dough? As you can tell from my questions, they didn’t teach this method of baking at the Culinary Institute of America -😁
we used to make stick bread with Bisquick over a camp fire.....
👍👍
Bearnaise sauce is heaven.
Love your videos and great to see you guys have a plan B in the event of such accidents
Aww, trouble in paradise. But the cloud had a silver lining. Yes ?
There is always one around the corner, sometimes you just have to wait for it :) Took a while before I was able to get my hands on the new camera, but I love it more than my old one. So all is well!
Sorry about your equipment damage, we all make mistakes. I for one am in no place to get all up in your shit, because I make mistakes too!! Lessons learned we move forward, ok! Enough said. Wow what a great place to watch the world go by, eat some lobster and have numerous rum punches! I could use one now. Enjoy Barbados for us all! Thanks kids!
Härligt att höra lite svenska också på er resa! :-) Förstod det som att det var flera svenska familjer där samtidigt?! Får en att längta dit själv ännu mer. (not really sure how much swedish you read?) Lovely to hear you speak some swedish as well in this episod. Barbuda looked like a great adventure although you also hade to do some work.
Sorry about your kit, glad it was insured. Unfortunately, you can’t always be prepared for sea states including smooth landings. Looked like everyone had a lot of fun.
Think I time travel or maybe just a Texan hears Barbuda & it sounds like Bermuda, well White Spots Pirates post a June 2021 yesterday, so no rules on real time here. The only person who never made a mistake is the one who has done nothing. I did want to see you make Béarnaise, it seems good quality butter make the difference, I do cheat & use bottled onion juice.
Hi Sophie, could you list your new camera & film kit, how do they compare ?
Google - A couple who live on a sailboat full-time share 4 perks and 7 brutally honest downsides to life on the sea- published by Insider that I saw on a Yahoo news site. Very nice report on Ryan & Sophie.
Glad all turned out well and the night and camaraderie looked like great fun. What insurance are you referencing?
Thanks for sharing. Accidents happen. Just glad no one got hurt. What is the name of your insurance company? Pontinius? I tired searching, but I may not be spelling it correctly.
Pantaenius 😉 could never guess the name from how I pronounce it!
@@RyanSophieSailing Thank you Sophie!
But did you kick a glass of orange juice across the beautiful carpet your wife had cleaned only three months ago, requiring the carpet cleaner to return to clean it again?
Yeah, that was an awkward conversation.
"Honey, you know I love you, right? Umm, apropos of nothing whatever, how do you clean orange juice out of carpet?"
Sorry you lost valuable equipment in the accident. BUT, you weren't injured. 😃😘 .......priorities me Lady.
.... and alcohol consumption was definitely NOT a contributing factor to the accident. ;)
Having used an average DSLR as part of previous technical job, but only for still shots, I decided to get a Nikon D810, two Nikkor zooms, Speedlight, and a partridge in a pear tree when I moved on several years ago. It's been great, more capability than I could possibly exhaust, but the camera always shuts off when recording after 10 minutes in video mode supposedly to protect the sensor. Does the A74 also have this problem?
Now we know who to blame for your swizzle hangover ,Project atticus and they are really behind with their videos as you were heading across the atlantic at the same time . Good to see you and ryan having fun again .
I think I am the one to blame for their Swizzle hangover ;) Seriously, they are really great and after having a look behind the scene, they work SO HARD. We have a huge amount of respect for them as filmmakers!
@@RyanSophieSailing I agree they really did work hard to get their boat ready for the crossing and hopefully safe crossing to enjoy the addition to the family
It does seem that all these learning curves involve some sort of pain...mental or physical...certainly my brush with 2nd and 3rd degree burns (and that was more than 50 years ago) have stayed as current as can be. I assume your camera curve is not as severe as your own lesson with hot stuff...still, commiserations are in order!
What kind of safety harnesses are you wearing? They look comfortable as well as capable.
The life jackets are spinlock 5d and 6d. The tethers are from kong
@@RyanSophieSailing Thank you so much. We are working toward a life of sailing. We have a 40 foot Morgan.
Great advence, for assuming an infant, green horn error, beaching an dinguy with waves! Now is only pending, to correct the rubish you have sad, about blue watter Sailing boats. That they are not needed, not diferent for crossing of an ocean in relation to an conventional s.v.
Your editing and recording quality have always been great but the production values here are outright stellar 👍
Live free!
@2:59 why is your main reefed if you're complaing about speed? :-)
We had a batton car broken past the second reef so we did not want to go past until it was fixed
@@RyanSophieSailing ahhh
Stuff happens, it's just part of the adventure of life! Insurance is legal gambling, you're betting money you'll screw up and the companies are counting on you not! LOL So you only win when you trash something. I've been driving fully insured for over 50 years and have only had one small claim for a windshield broken by a mahogany nut, so for me the house wins and I lose!
Rofl, c'est la vie!
OMG how reefed was your main and head. That's worrying.
Get a pelican box
Who cares about the cameras…did you have fun that night? If yes, I assume, then it’s just stuff. Memories last forever.
4000$ of my favorite kit was still a hard pill to swallow... But I am truly grateful that nothing worse happen. It was a really fun night, but an expensive lobster dinner, hahaha :D
Marshmallows, seriously, are these people 5 year old? Amazing all the crappy food boaters eat, wonder why??
:-)
Ohh... hello there
oh hi!!! :D
Stay away from the rum swizzle
This time it was Rum Punch! And it was NOT consumed in excess… 😉
@@RyanSophieSailing Yeah just like when I was drinking boulevard brewing companies and Bourbon barrel beer and I drank 4 of them and I was like what's going on here and I looked down and found out thay are 12.4%.
Bonjour, pouvez-vous me donner votre retour de satisfaction sur votre lave linge, pour et contre.
Merci d'avance.
Cultural oddity? At 4:50 you lift up to open that bottle, Every time, since Coke was a dime, pulled down to flip off the cap. No idea why that caught my eye.
