Thanks again to Gary From Birmingham! Another wee nugget this one. I mean, it is still a $100 Seiko so that comes with a whole bunch of inherent limitations, but if you like the Daytona, but it is just a pip dream, then this wee giuy might scratch the itch for a while anyway. Cheers, Jody
Very very nice.
A step back when Seiko was interested in the common man looking for a cheap, functional and beautiful watch, with a hideous bracelet.
Yeahhh. I put a leather strap on it ! Such a great piece with leather 👍
Would it be a good idea to create playlists for each follower who lends you (not just once ofc) watches? For example, I like Gary’s style preference, would be curious to see what other watches he provided you with 🤔
Now, that is a good idea!
Great idea
I love the idea but I predict we would all grow quite jealous of Mr. X rather quickly lol.
Good plan.
For around the same price last year I nabbed the SBTR027, another Seiko JDM chronograph but with a diameter closer to 40mm, a mecha-quartz movement, and a 3-6-9 layout. Gorgeous little thing.
Very nice. I have a SBTR021 in this line. Excellent inexpensive chrono.
Well, in this case the Rolex Daytona reference is a bit far fetched, and I'm not talking quality or specs here.. Whether you look at the subdial layout, the date, the chrono pushers, the bezel design or the bracelet design...everything very different from the Rolex!
I feel like it looks much more like a 90s-era Omega speedy reduced (ST175.0043) than a Daytona, actually. I have the black version of the Seiko very similar to this: SND367PC, and it's a great little watch.
Oh Jody, as an RN I am beginning to become genuinely worried about that poor larynx of yours 🤒
He’s just started his transition to full Connery
These videos most likely were filmed very close together within a few days so he's probably feeling better at this point
Needs to keep of those Capstan Full Strength! They do that.
@@ulmen24 Almost choked on my breakfast 🤣
It’s totally irrational and I have no practical use for it but for whatever reason I absolutely love analog chronographs with 20th or 10th of a second sub dials 😂 Therefore I now need this Seiko in my collection. Reminds me a bit of the pilot chronographs Seiko supplied to the RAF back in the day too which is another win in my book too. Great stuff as always Jody!
That Seiko looks as much like a Daytona, about as much as I look like George Clooney. 😂
Maybe if you have rubber nipples you'll pull the look off
I don't see any Rolex-like characteristic to judge it as an alternative to the hyped watch. Just a very cool and interesting everyday chronograph with very adequate dimensions.
C'mon Jody that looks nothing like a Daytona, no more than any chrono. But, it does look very much like my Casio Edifice also with a maroon dial!
Been looking into getting an edifice…
I swear, I bought a couple of Seikos like this back in the late 80s or early 90s. Seiko quartz chronos with 6-9-12 subregisters. This was in the USA. I think it was a different movement because it didn't have the sub second registers and it had an alarm, but it looks mostly the same. It was all I could afford back then with my entry level job salary. Lasted forever. I eventually gave it to one of my son's buddies so I must have had it for over 30 years and it was still working.
I really like this chrono module. 12 hrs and 1/20 second resolution just make it "real" in my book. I don't understand chronograph modules that time in 1 minute increments for 30 minutes for example. I can do that with a dive time bezel. That being said, I'm a sucker for a chronograph and have a dozen or so in my collection. Don't think I'll be adding this but it has its charms.
This is a very nice, still inexpensive option from a real name brand. Another great option from Seiko, in my opinion and looking even more like a Daytona at the approx. $130 price point is the Seiko SBTR 011, 017, 023 series. Comes in multiple color options, has a more Daytona-ish dial layout, 100m water resistance and tits SOLAR, so you don't ever have to worry about batteries. As it is for Seiko it traditionally it does not have the greatest bracelet, but thats easy to remedy.
SBTR001-029 aren't Solar, they have 8T63 and 8T67 meca-quartz movements (aka VK63/67). Great watches though and well worth €130, even the bracelet is usable.
@@fillerbunny I saw one listed incorrectly as, 'Solar' and seeing the dark subdials I made an incorrect statement. It was a mistake on my part following the listing and not looking further.. You are correct. Thank you for the correction. I agree, even not being solar I think it is the better option, better build quality and more of that daytona-ish style for the money. Thanks again.
Gary and Mr. X always coming in clutch. Thank you guys and of course Jody for introducing us to so many new watches.
Thats a looker! And see how the second hand hits the markers! Lots of more expensive quartz can’t do that
It is rare to see a big brand selling burgundy/maroon dial watches. I just got this watch this month that way I have a little something that has my college color. For me, the size is perfect, and since my eyes are still okay, the legibility is not a problem at all. Thank you for the video, Jody!
it resembles the Daytona in the sense that it's a chronograph and a watch..
Not a bad watch for $100 especially coming from Seiko. My money would be on the Invicta speedway chronograph. It looks a lot more like a Daytona but with some very interesting corks. It does cost more typically $179. It comes in a lot of very interesting colors.
You nailed it with your end statement… “A sweet little watch if you’re not into the AliExpress lookalikes”… I have a bunch of AliExpress watches Peppered in to my collection. But I do love my inexpensive ‘big brand watches’… And it’s fun to say “ I know it’s not a Rolex or an Omega, but it’s still a cool watch!”
I believe that Seiko also has a model with the registers at 3/6/9 to give it that Daytona ish feel even more. Enjoyed the vid.
there are also models with marked bezels. this one has nothing to do with a Daytona apart from bringing views to this video.
can you share the model number please
@@armasxu The one I own is the SBTR027. I really like it.
Seiko SBTR013
This movement was in the Mini Flightmaster, which I cam very, VERY close to buying on a number of occasions. I'm glad they're still using the movement, so if one gets into just the right aesthetic package for my tastes, it'll be a definite purchase for me.
Agree , not that much like a Daytona at all - perhaps if it was black and white and the complications at 3, 6 and 9 would be. Anyway it looks alright though :)
Nice watch, I like the fact that it has a 12 hour chrono, very useful...
Great to see a chronograph with an interesting colour dial rather than black or white and a more revered Seiko name for the price of a Pulsar or Lorus (with the same movement no doubt) thanks Jody for bringing it to our attention via Gary. Would look good next to my Pagani Daytona homage, which I snapped up at my local Cash Converters for a measly $30 Aussie pesos.
I’ve had this watch for about 5 years and I love it. I even added a double domed sapphire crystal to it 😎👌🏻
Where did you get your double dome crystal from / what size? Is it a one size fits all?
Had one like this in black when I first started my collection, years later traded it for my first Orient. The Orient is now gone and find myself wishing I had never let it go. Loved that watch
I bought the Seiko Solar Modellista when I was in Japan. A JDM watch only sold in Japan. What a beauty.
Looks more like a Tudor prince date chronograph, or one of the Speedmaster reduced versions with the subdial layout.
I have one of these Seiko Chrono's since 1993. Used it in the army. No scratches on the hardlex. These things run forever(with a battery change every few years).
I had a similar one SND309, a fantastic little thing!
I just got one. Your review was right on. A bit difficult to read and a truly cheap bracelet and clasp. But beautiful and elegant. I'm wearing mine on a natural cork strap. I don't typically wear chronos in water, but it's nice to have the option.
Bizzare was looking at these a few weeks ago, found a slight varient with numbers , personally looks more like a Speedy
The $150 Seiko SBTR013 is even MORE of a Daytona lookalike. I’d even say it’s a flat out homage. Check it out.
As one who has studied the functionality of chronograph movements in general, I can say that the ingenious architecture of the 7-T-92 movement is unmatched by any mechanical, Meca-Quartz, or any other quartz movements available out there. It amazes me that Seiko can deliver such a quality movement in a chronograph watch that costs only 100 bucks. This watch is by far more capable of the Daytona as far as functionality goes, the wonder of quartz movements. I love quartz and digital movements!. I love the philosophy that stands behind. Casio. These movements are cheap to mass-produce; they are reliable; they are affordable.
To me this seems way more like a speedmaster triple date homage without the date than a Daytona-esque watch. Really cool watch regardless.
I have the seiko the spirit as my first watch! Yall should check out the sbtr029, a bit homage-y but i just love the look of the platinum daytona
Is it me or your voice is coarser in this video, Jody?
You must have missed last week's vids mate! I'm almost back to normal after 2 rough weeks of 'Daycare Disease!'
Love that t-shirt Jody! 😄
Looks great in that colour. Great to see another Seiko. Thanks Jody
Hi Jody, I cannot believe you have just reviewed this watch as I have been looking at these over the last few days as well as the Seiko SND range 👍. I think for me potentially they are slightly too small but I have to say on the leather strap it looked the business imo 👌. I hope you are better mate and thanks for all the videos, I enjoy watching them 👏🏼
Got the SND409 - sweet little yellow dial chrono.
Jody, take a look at the Seiko Essentials series. They have a super affordable titanium quartz with a sapphire crystal. Just picked one up, and it's pretty nice.
I was able to buy the black dial version of this watch thru Amazon in the US. Heck of a nice watch!
Looks more like a Speedy I would have said, but that would not have the same financial rewards as saying ‘Rolex’ in the title 😢
Sub dials in the wrong position, date complication, hardly legible Tachymeter bezel looks NOTHING LIKE a Daytona. Plenty of Ali Express watches that homage the Daytona for a similar price. Clean your glassess Jody !! 👎⌚😒
This one is worth your time! But come on Jodie, it's more Speedmaster than Daytona! There's also a black dial SND367, but my pick is the navy dial reverse panda dial SND365, much more legible and clearly looks like an Omega Speedmaster 3511.50.00!
I had a strict one in one out policy...... had
DANGIT GARY! 😂 Thanks Jodi ;-) Any NH34 GMT movements trickling down to us Chinese watch peasants yet?
First one tomorrow night mate! Not Ali, but still pretty good value, I think.
@@JustOneMoreWatch Woop! 👍 I'll be there with bells on. Tinny-sounding, half-assed factory-churned bells. ☺
Ouch... 38mm, that's gonna look quite tiny on my fat 8" wrist. To be fair, it's mostly alcoholic bloat.
Heh... horrible bracelet, quartz, but I reckon it's a steal for someone who wants a red-faced Seiko for not much money! Not my cup of tea EXACTLY, but looks like a decent value. Thanks sir.
Yep the leather strap is a winner!
I just got a Seiko Spirit SBTR027 delivered from Sakura yesterday and I can't recommend it enough. Sure, the sapphire and the bracelet on the speedtimer are nice upgrades, but do they justify a 500$ price difference? The spirit JDM line from Seiko reminds me of what Seiko was a few years ago: you get a crappy bracelet and hardlex, but otherwise really cool watches with great designs and amazing dials for 100-200$. These things are awesome.
Some years ago I bought myself another seiko chrono for about the same price and similiar looks except the bezel - SNDC89P2. Really a stunner, wearing it a lot, especially in the summertime due to the light weight...you just have to get it off that ugly strap ;)
Wish they would do these with meca-quartz.
You should look into the Seiko SNDD95P2.
Same movement, chronograph, 100m WR, perfectly aligning 120 click bezel, dive style hands, rubber strap.
No scredoen crown or pushers, although the pushers look like some.
Never thought I'd see my little obscure seiko daytona get a spotlight on this channel.
Gary surely is a good man, thanks for the review Jody
Great review Jody and thanks to Gary for lending yet another watch... I wonder what he'll send you next as its sure to be another enjoyable watch!? 👌
The flexibility of the steel band is intentional, I'm sure. The arm isn't strait as a cylinder, and a flexible band feels a lot better on it.
ooh, a great find. Very tempted to get that one. However, browsing the site, I found another one, slightly larger with beefier hands for a smidge more.
I just bought the dark blue and white sub dial version.
Well Jody since ur doing jdms why don’t you get in a citizen nb1050 they have 3 colors I’d say blue or white it’s the true sarb killer
I have the blue version, the SND365. I've had it for a few years and I still love it. I'm actually waiting on a sapphire crystal for it as I type this. The watch is definitely worth the price but the bracelet is absolutely junk. Prepare to swap the bracelet. Otherwise, it's a great little watch.
I've have a few chronos and I can say with absolute certainty, I've used the stop watch function for running and nothing else. I've never calculated the speed of a racecar, or even my own car.
What does this have to do with this video. Not much; only to say, I think I'm done with chronos for awhile. A cheap awesome Seiko is not bound to change my mind. But they are nice. Thanks Jody.
Divers are my thing. I'll be doing a lot of diving in the next 2 years. Already planning a trip to Australia to dive the GBR (If possible). 😮 in 2024. 😂🤩
I was going to say "I need one of these things!" Right up until you brought out that Casio link box lol! Ok... Maybe I need both of them now.
The snd371p1 might be the best 'daytona' look one can get under 200 aud coming from the same line as this
Hi Jody!
Seiko actually has a more daytona-ish Model in their lineup.
SBTR013/15/27 etc... With symmetric dial more oyster-ish case ;)
Havent seen this burgundy asym dial here in Tokyo.
I have the same movement in a Seiko with a bigger case and better integrated bracelet, it failed after about 14 years. Managed to get an Epson version to fit and was miles cheaper than the Seiko branded version
Nice looking watch! Thanks for this. May I suggest - instead of a brown strap - a burgundy leather strap? Make a statememt in burgundian boldness!
My Seiko JDM Chrono I bought had a bracelet that would probably only fit a 6 inch wrist. I ended up putting a leather strap on it but would have rather kept the bracelet. Not sure I'll be buying anymore JDM stuff.
Great choice! Impressed that Seiko actually got the second hand to align with the indices…🤣 Like you I would rather it were at least 40mm. Cheers and hope you can shake that croaky voice soon!
Great video - as always - but the comparison with the Daytona is utterly wrong.
It has to be compared withe the Speedy, the 3155.50.00.
I would put this watch at a solid "just OK". Certainly wouldn't compare it to a Daytona, but I'd pick it over a Fossil let's say.
Is the crystal flat or domed?
This honestly looks like a lovely watch, especially considering the price
Watch 8 Price 9 Gary 10
He's worth an 11.
Jody, you should really take a look at the SEIKO SND253 (or its blue dial version, the SND255). It's a flightmaster and it has the same movement than this one, but it's 41mm and it comes with a better bracelet. And the most important thing: it is beautiful and it wears amazing. There are still some out there for really interesting prices.
Omg I just Bought this model the Black dial Version. Really Happy you have reviewed this watch Seiko pirit watch.
I'm looking for an automatic with the best lume and a bracelet. I have a $350 budget. Do you have any recommendations?
Wanted to buy this one for about 5 years. More specific the snd365 which is a panda with a blue dial. Gorgeous but the chapter ring looking like plastic made me get the feeling of a cheep watch at that price range. Does anyone else get that feeling? Maybe I should consider this again as a red color is more interesting
I have a lot of Seiko watches and Seiko 5s, but personally I found this and all of the >$150 Seiko chronographs to be pretty underwhelming. The problem with the standard black version I had is the silver print on the dial has much lower visibility at different angles than plain white. From a 2nd person viewers’ perspective and a distance of about 3-5 feet the subdials aren’t very visible and sometimes it doesn’t even look like you’re wearing a chronograph. Haven’t seen the Spirit chronograph line but those look much more promising
Nice dial but legibility is too poor for me.
Thanks for the review. The Seiko SBTR "Spirit" line is a more direct homage to Rolex, particularly the SBTR021. They have some very unique colors - I have the SBTR027 with a light blue dial and it looks great. Slightly heavier and chunkier than I am used to but I get used to it fairly quickly. I am going to pick up one of the SBTQ models. I think we all started with a "6 watch case with a strict one in one out policy"!
I think the size is perfect and you can tell if it is 29min or 30 min on your lunch break, unlike some citizen's I've used. The Pagani is too big for my small wrists.
This watch will come in handy when I have to explain to people that homage watches are neither new, nor a Chinese invention to sidestep the “fake” label. Thanks Jody.
This is a great looking watch. I think I'm going to buy the Pagani Design homage watch next week. I'll wear it to work.
Even with the additional straps one may need for this watch, it’s still a great deal. Thanks for this content!
I've got one of these and within two weeks the bottom pusher just straight up fell out of the watch. Besides that it's a nice watch but what little water resist it had is now compromised and I've lost some of the functionality
TBH I really don’t see the similarity to the Daytona other than the fact it’s a 3 register chrono with a stainless steel tachy bezel.
Does look like a very nice watch though for the money.
I've got a Panda Daytona alternative from Seiko, the 6138-8000 "Baby Panda". A lot more than $100 these days though sadly!
That's just a nice looking chrono in its own right, and less than 10mm! Great value good looking watch, what's not to like for that money, bargain.
Check out Seiko Spirit SBTR013. This looks more like a Speedmaster, but also has the Daytona Vibe.
I would say it looks like a old Tudor TIger chrono than a Daytona, as the registers are not in the same locations. Anyway, really nice!
Had no idea any Seiko could still be this cheap, I was hoping for an Invicta Speedway ;)
Yeah even my Alpina quartz chrono doesn’t shut itself off in an hour so if you forget to stop it, and with a tiny 395 battery, doubt it will last the stated 2 years of life
It's certainly pretty, but I don't see even a vague resemblance to the Daytona aside from that it's a chronograph.
Rolex,Seiko all the ingredients of a good video!
I'd love to see a review on a Hitori Habuka. I got one recently and I'm truly impressed I think one of the best kept secrets in the game right now. 297 usd on gnomon but there's a code for 20% off you can find as well
Are there any other sub 39mm 12 hour chronos?
Thats actually very nice, and a perfect size- so many chronographs are unwearably large. Nice find.
I would like to see if there's a nice bracelet that fits this well. maybe strap code? that would make me much more likely to buy one
Jody, check this one, it looks more like a Rolex: SEIKO SPIRIT Watch Men's Chronograph SBTR 013
Nice looking watch. Makes me yearn for the two Seiko 7T34 Flightmasters I had in the early 90s. Sadly, I'm almost 60 years old and struggle to read those dials even with my reading glasses on, so I have to give chronographs a pass these days.
😂Jody you have got to rince your throat for moisturizing with the following medications in this order Tequila Souza, Cognac Napoléon, Whisky from Scotland, Gin from England, Rum from the Caraïbes and Vodka Wyborowa from Poland. In this exact correct the voice comes back when you wake up 😂
Sorry dude but this is not a daytona alternative :)
I still have my Seiko alarm-chrono from the 2000's but it hasn't seen use for 10 years. These watches are fine for about 10 years then they are are worthless; the hands keep getting misaligned, then start having issues with keeping time and sometimes just suddenly stopping. Even if it was a domestic market watch they are pretty much unfixable since no local watchmaker bothers with them anymore, they have to go back to authorized Seiko repair by which time the cost of repair is just buying a new watch.
