The German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche would describe his formula for human greatness as amor fati-a love of fate. “That one wants nothing to be different, not forward, not backwards, not in all eternity. Not merely bear what is necessary, still less conceal it….but love it.” The idea behind 'amor fati' is to love and embrace everything that happens, whether or not it fits with the goals we have in mind.
Memento Mori-the ancient practice of reflection on mortality that goes back to Socrates, who said that the proper practice of philosophy is “about nothing else but dying and being dead.” In early Buddhist texts, a prominent term is maraṇasati, which translates as ‘remember death.’ Some Sufis have been called the “people of the graves,” because of their practice of frequenting graveyards to ponder on death and one’s mortality.
The single most important practice in Stoic philosophy is differentiating between what we can change and what we can’t. What we have influence over and what we do not. A flight is delayed because of weather-no amount of yelling at an airline representative will end a storm. No amount of wishing will make you taller or shorter or born in a different country. No matter how hard you try, you can’t make someone like you. And on top of that, time spent hurling yourself at these immovable objects is time not spent on the things we can change. You Control How You Play.

That's because stoicism is the branch of philosophy closest to absolute Truth. "What can better suit your needs than that which comes to you woven in the pattern of your destiny?" (or words to that effect- Marcus Aurelius) So true. And yet, these teachings are difficult to adopt until one has good reason to BELIEVE that this is true. That "reason" can come to one in a moment through an experience. But lacking an experience, one must find that reason through investigation. And my book "THE HOLY GRAIL IS FOUND" takes its reader on a journey that accomplishes exactly that. A'd today, just as if to test I remember what I've been memorizing this week, my car broke down in the middle of the road - and it's rush hour. Cars honking from behind though I had my warning signal on.. People looking at you as if they gonna kill you.. And it happened. I smiled and amor fati prompted from my brain. And then 'you control how you play' got me out of the car to put on my warning triangle. I was for sure gonna be late at office so 'memento mori' reassured me.

I feel your pain and am sorry for your loss 😢
I also lost my mom recently…heartbreaking, yes.
She was a kind person and my best friend. A part of my everyday is now gone.
However I tried from the beginning to see what the universe was giving me in the action of taking her away…
What is the lesson or the blessing.
And I saw that my brother and I were left with our father who we have a fractured relationship with.
So if this is happening “for us” and not “to us”, then maybe we are now given the circumstances or opportunity to grow as individuals if we can work towards a more harmonious relationship together.
      Has it been easy…hell no.
And sadly it’s still very early in the season of loss.
Are there days of great sadness and regret and grief… Hell ya.
      But that’s human and heartbreak.
I tell myself that’s part of the experience.
And on top of that I’m a person who deals with anxiety, depression and is neurodivergent…so it’s not like my brain just naturally wanT to act in a stoic or positive manner.
And then to add to my layers of loss, grief, stress…my job, my career of 18 years is over, very recently laid off… and so soon after the loss of my beloved mom.
My role outsourced by a family owned company that I was so dedicated to…and the pain is compounded.
So again I ask “what are the lessons or blessings here?”
I just tell myself, it’s spilled milk…now try and move forward.
I’m soooo glad that I came across this video because it soooo eloquently and philosophically explains what it is that I’m trying to do or think mentally when faced with hardships or situations I can’t control.
I wish you strength and peace ✌️

Something sticks out, strangely. When I was incarcerated, [and it was tragic as to how it happened], I saw the saying (2times in a row), “This Too Shall Pass”. He mentions this. That saying actually got me through. It was written in the cell, twice. Thank God I saw it. Helped a lot

Debra Marek Funny. That saying has been in my head for a long time. I’m not sure where I first got it, but it has definitely helped me through some hard times. Whenever something seems grueling and no end in sight...I remind myself - this too shall pass...and I think of the thousands of lifetimes before me that have already played out. The slow inevitable passage of time trudges on regardless of our circumstances. Thanks for your story. That’s some deep shit seeing that scribbled on a jail cell wall. Makes me think that someone spent a long time there and that’s what they concluded. Stay out of trouble =]

I can try and share my experiences recently:
I totaled my supercharged E46 M3 and I was devastated. I got depressed. I left my group of car friends. I stopped talking to friends I spent all my time with. I stayed inside. I was miserable.
Then I realized my perspective needed to change. I eventually got insurance to cash out a decent check that would just about pay off my loan. I got out from under a car that was fairly problematic and expensive to maintain and expensive to drive. It was a money pit and the interest wasn’t the greatest on the loan. And I walked away from all that. No injuries to myself or others. Nobody else was involved in the accident. And my mechanic will be getting the totaled car to make money off of and work on.
It’s all based on perspective. You can let life slap you in the face and just whine. Or you can take that slap, let it piss you off and beat life’s ass and show it you’re stronger than it.

I hated stoicism when I first learned about it. Had a rough start to life and grew up hypervigilant, constantly seeking avenues of control, fearing death and suffering, reliving past traumas, trying to manipulate fate at every turn.
Desperate and severely depressed, I decided to die. But at the precipice, I suffered what felt like a universe shattering existential crisis. I remember shouting "I have no control!" That's when it hit me. From Zeno to the serenity prayer, it all fell into place. It suddenly made sense. I spent the next few years feeling the burden of fear and death leave me. I felt alive and in control of myself.
      Stoicism literally saved my life.

Jan 26th was about a Mantra, did not expect to find your official youtube channel but happy I did :) just started my stoic handbook/meditation that will hopefully continue all year, and continue to guide the rest of my life.

This opened my eyes about Stoicism. I always saw it as a logical way to deny feeling, but amor fati really brings a different context that actually it's great to feel and love these things, deeply.

I needed to hear this, some evil people did something really dirty to me, I’ve been trying to come to terms with it. Their lies put me in jail, I’ve lost my drivers license , I’m on probation for several months.,,and I’ve never been in trouble my entire life....yet here I am.

Telling myself "Remember you will die" has gotten me through life since childhood... in my bleakest moments knowing that I don't have to exist on this mortal plane forever has brought me a lot of comfort. Admittedly, its not always the healthiest to lean on exclusively so I'm happy to have a few others I can use now.
