How do you ACTUALLY pronounce Cait Sith?

- Square Enix has officially kicked the hornets nest by providing the “correct” way to pronounce Cait Sith. Unaware to most people, especially in America, the way we say Cait Sith has been wrong this whole time and there’s a rich history behind it. With Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth coming out here soon, the topic has come up again.
- Hry
Cat shit.
Perfect
That's what I always said
Doesn't change the fact that I love them. (They're very cute.)
Him
Him
Its Aerith/Aeris all over again. I'll just use whichever pronounciation they use in the game.
TBF both Aeris and "Cait Sihth" are mistranslations. The Aerith one was fixed, but c'est la vie, I'm not gonna freak out about it. They should've done the proper pronunciation but it's not gonna kill me
@@TheLegendOfLameAerith sounds almost the same as Aeris. I did not even know they changed it to Aerith when i played remake. But cat shee is a huge leap from Cait Sith, whomb people remember the character as.
@@stephenvanbellinghen933 Aerith is Aerith because Aeris is a mistranslation. It's supposed to sound similar to earth. "Ket she" being the proper pronunciation is purely because Cait Sith's name comes from gaelic mythology. Like inherently he is inspired by said mythological creature and the japanese version of the game even gets the pronunciation right... But I mean, whatever, I'm not gonna really get upset about it and just call it what the english dub calls it, rather than being someone who whines about it not being "Aeris" for instance
@@TheLegendOfLame Yeah its not like theyre ruining the character or anything. Changing to ket she would almost be like trying to get the cat's pronouns right for a game made when that nonsense didn't exist.
Yes choose to remain dumb.
This is the whole FFX of "Tidus" name when hearing this lol
It's TY-dis. As in "The Oceans Tide". Because the game's heavy focus on water.
@@AutumnWoodhamwrong, its Tee-dus. His name is based on the Okinawan word for "sun, " and in the Japanese version of the game that (Tida) is his name.
On top of that it has been pronounced Tee-dus in the Dissidia games, World of Final Fantasy, and Kingdom Hearts 1, and James Arnold Taylor has confirmed that to be the correct pronunciation. The only time it was ever pronounced "Ty-dus" was a single line in KH2, which is an error.
FF Fans when the language is dying (celtic): Uhh who cares lol
FF Fans when the language is dead (latin): YOU NEED TO SPELL EVERY SINGLE LETTER OF THIS WEIRD ASS NAMED OST
A japanese company took a gaelic word they likely didnt hear pronounced correctly, did their best to spell it in their writing system, and then sent it off to America where it had to be translated across an ocean, in a time where translators were just not a priority in video games. (something I'm all most positive FFVII changed)
We were always going to be confused.
In the new game he says hi im Kate Sith. Easy.
I agree
Yeah, I'd go with game lore over. I prefer it to be accurate to my interpretation of how it's pronounced.
It's cat shee in Scottish Gaelic and ket shee in Irish Gaelic.
I will pronounce it as Keqing if I must, but I will always treat the pronunciation debate as a joke
Gaelic is hard with odd spelling that doesn’t match pronunciation. However it sounds mystical like a wizard talking.
Bro, I study linguistics and that is such a common problem xD
Ket shee
Cait is so cute😍
First reading i thought like "kate sith" but i shortly discovered i was ignorant of the pronunciation and its definitely "cat she" like when i first read the name Maedbh i was way off (its like "maiv")
No, you are not ignorant but pronounciation is just dumb.
Policing of people how to pronounce things and being too sentimental about it, shows how stupid people have become.
As long as people could understand the words or the name pointing to, is enough.
It is the same stupidity as "overly specifying a gender".
Also in germany. We also say cat Sith
Excellent way to sum up this debate
Barret is also a mistranslation iyk
Learning that Japanese katakana words are written the way they are most similar to the actual pronunciation, I always pronounce ket shee.
It's like Ornstein & Smough from Dark Souls. English/American pronunciation of 'Stein' and Germanic 'Stein', one is factually correct over the other, but it all comes down to the pronunciation that's acceptable in your language.. or your knowledge.
FINALLY
I know I heard Square Enix but when I heard Cait Sith IMMEDIATELY thought of Persona
Fried fish
Its like when DBZ fans say 'kuririn' instead of krillin, but then they pronounce every other character name correctly. Or 'komy hommy haa' instead of kamehameha'
But Kuririn is how you actually pronounce it krillin is the incorrect Funimation way like how Kayoken and Sayin are wrong as it is KAI-O-KEN and SAI-YAN
@@PikachuGamerSMT bruh everyone irl and on tv say KRILLIN. Kuririn is the Japanese way
cat sith
This is hilarious, cause I always said it the right way. 😂
Crazy things is when the game 1st came out I pronounced is “Cat” & was called wrong it’s “Kate” now the game says “Kate” and it’s wrong, it supposed to be “Cat” the whole time! I hate the internet 😂
Kate She. Got it.
You’re not dumb. You just read the subs.
Honestly I just pronounce it “Kate Sith” because it sounds cooler to me, and since he’s from Shinra, who is as evil as the Sith from Star Wars
I just call him Sith , calling him kate is like me talking to my cousin
If we can't agree on a name why not just combine them? From now on let's pronounce it Kate Shee
Cait Sith/ Cait Sidhe means "Cat Fairy" or "Spirit Cat" in the the same way Bean Sith means "Spirit Woman", but that name is typically anglicised as "Banshee". The original localisation team would've saved us all a lot of time if they'd just spelled it "Ketshee"
Haha 😂
My bro and I pronounce it as cat sith and that is when we played it as kids haha 😂 👍
Never heard of those other names haha 😂
While I get wanting it to be the one pronounciation because of Gaelic… if that’s how the creators of the game want the character to be pronounced you can’t argue with them. He isn’t the actual mythological person he’s a character that was made to be a reference to him. How many things in final fantasy aren’t pronounced how they really should be, it happens when it’s not really as important as you think. Final fantasy 7 isn’t what killed the Gaelic language and getting mad at it isn’t going to help your goal of trying to bring awareness your just going to be aggravating to a lot of people who are uninformed and make them already not listen to you
To be fair, I don’t think “cat she” is as satisfying to say.
“My language isn’t for your satisfaction”, yeah well, the game is. 🤷♂️
Ive just always called him Cat Sith
I dunno but they're a cute lil thing so I like em'
I'll be honest, I'm Scottish and I always called him Kate Sith until only very recently when I started studying my native language
I say Sith because of Star Wars lol
I Call him Cait Sheeth.
uhm most people in the world probably pronounced it as Kate Sith or Kate Sit or Kayt Sit mainly because Majority of languages in the do not have have a silent e and most importantly a silent th on ends of words.
Everyone’s always gonna dog on America like they don’t mispronounce anything. Here’s the thing, if your fan base that spends the bloody money to buy a game that did not clarify anything, it’s best to go with the flow. The Gaelic speakers of the world had 26 years to correct erbody.
Anyone that pronounces it the “correct way” just loves sniffing their own farts
It’s canon now
Cazzi
People just need to get over it and let those say it they way they want lol
(shee) in Irish garlic is spelled Sidhe not with a th unless it's Scottish garlic
Man, you're the first one I see mentioning this on the entire debacle.
@@3plecheeseburger I'm into Celtic folklore
I mean if you know context clues and basic reading, you’ll know immediately that Cait Sith has a Scottish accent same way you know Cid is country, Red 13 being more Native American sounding, and Barret being…..well a stereotypical sounding black guy. It’s context. You just know Cloud is edgy too, real emo, anime protagonist sounding just based off his mannerisms and dialogue. It’s not that big of a deal but it’s hard not to notice these things as you read
I personally call him rat sith
Though he did kinda redeem himself when getting the black materia
I pronounced it Cat Sith
Both sides are wrong its cat sith 😼I’m cat
So i have been saying it right
It's ket she
It's not wrong, it's spelt differently.
I think they should've gone with the proper gaelic pronunciation, but I think people getting mad about it and acting like Square is being racist is just crazy. They don't go after other games that also pronounce it as "Kate" or whatever. They do it the same in Persona, and and I didn't see anyone comment on that
I’m not calling Cait Sith Cat shit…there is only one point in the game where it deserved that name.
I always called him Kate Sith
The correct pronunciation is Reeve.
Ok really, not everyone knows that even if it isn't really important.
I personally prefer it to sound like how it's spelled for once LOL.
Just because it’s English doesn’t make it absolute and objective, we’re nowhere near the top of the list in most educated globally so 😭😭😭
Anyways I personally pronounce it “kite sith” lmao, but good to know it has an actual pronunciation.
people dont how to pronuciate.
its so simple
Not all Americans
How does the official pronounce is own character wrong…
I mean, they go back and forth calling Red XIII a dog or a cat, so yeah, consistency isn't their strong point.
Pretty sure Guilty Gear pronounces Giovanna as “Gee-oh-vanna” (the Italian pronunciation?) when, a Brazilian individual I’ve spoken to, says the proper form is close, being Jyo-vanna, but a short I sound in between the Y and J. So, it’s kinda happened recently too. Lol
because the localization of the original is not the "official". the official is the japanese version of ff7. This is like how Aerith's name was mistranslated to Aeris
Kate sith is the only correct way to say it.
What makes me sad is not the pronuntiation debate, but the care and detail that get lost by not knowing the reference.
They carefully choose that name.
Cait Sith stole souls. -Reeve- controls Cait Sith.
And who designed the current reactors? -Reeve-
What is mako? -Souls-
Of course, that is just a simplification.
That by the way, the fact that wears a crown, is also on point, since there is a tale where a bunch of Cait Sith stole a coffin (cough, Vincent, cough) and a crown.
Edit: I am not that obnoxious about the spelling like others are being.
It would be hypocritical, there are lots of names in foreign languages I can't properly spell myself, or that my language translated to another thing entirely.
But, I think we should appreciate the reference to the original myth more than what I see people involved in this conflict actually do, since it is also related to a critically endangered (or functionally extinct, depending on who you ask) breed of wildcat.
So big, humanized cats are allegedly all based off of celtic folklore? Total nonsense.
"The _cat-sìth_ (Scottish Gaelic: [kʰaʰt̪ ˈʃiː], plural cait-shìth), in Irish _cat sí_ (Irish: [kat̪ˠ ˈʃiː]) is a fairy creature from Celtic mythology, *said to resemble a large black cat with a white spot on its chest."*
Not all the cats, but this specific one. They even tried to match the colors dude xD
Edit: I am going to even go far than that:
Cait Sith (the myth) stole souls.
Reeve controls Cait Sith.
And who designed the current reactors?
Reeve.
What is mako?
Souls.
Worse FF character or close so who cares. I’ll keep saying it exactly how it’s spelled.
I’ve always said Kate Sith.
If people are mad, then fuck em. People just love to complain.
I’d rather call him kate sith instead of cat shit
people need to stop crying over fake characters named after fake characters
people who get heated over how to pronounce things are sad.
It's irrelevant how someone else pronounces it. It's a fictional character.
Pronunciation is relative to who you are and where you live.
If people understand what you are talking about, then you pronounced it correct.
Who needs to pronounce names correctly when you're normalizing insane pronouns? 🙃🙃🙃
that having literally zero to do with the topic shows how sadly obsessive you are about the english language and i dont know what to tell you. do you ever wonder why you're so miserable all the time?
They should spell it how they want it to be pronounced
Well, if they (Whoever "they" is in any given instance) have a problem with how I pronounce it, they should take it up with how it's spelled.
Of course people around the world are going to have different pronunciations. What stupid shit to have a fight over.
I'm so glad they went in this direction. We don't say Croudo-kun either sooooo.... 😂
Is it because Cloud is a word that already has a defined pronunciation in English? 🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃
@@AlexanderPR2 I'm just pointing out that language of origin doesn't really matter.
But it's not the fate of a dying language... it's a video game character.
Even if it's a direct nod, the language in the game is English. If they want you to call them cat shee (which, I'm sorry, just does not sound good imo), then spell it that way.
The only thing that makes it looks like kate shee is the language that the creator didn't even acknowledge. Cait Sith been Cait Sith since the beginning of ff7 up to date. Nothing change.
In the game It’s pronounced Kate Sith, get over it already cry babies.
