Just nailed the chorus for the first time, what a rush! Thanks for the excellent cover!
that's cool. That's a great feeling...keep going! :)
That you put almost 5 hours into working this out so that we can benefit is a testament to your dedication to your craft and to the musical community, Greg. Thank you.
My pleasure Paul. Thank you very much for the comment...cheers! :)
Man that bassline cooks way more than I knew. Nathan East.....figures.
hehe...yup, it sure does :)
The bass is so low in the mix on the original song, it's criminal!
I wanted to learn this song, and figured from hearing it at first, thought it might be easier than I imagined, but upon watching this video, like wtf??? Still a fun song tho
You should take donations for this, imagine how many guys have sounded great at a gig because of it! Well done.
haha...thanks :)
This is amazing. Honestly the best bass tabs for this song. I'm a new bass player and I found the other ones complicated. Thank you so much.
hey Beenz...thank you very much. I'm really glad you like it :) Good luck and have fun learning it!
I have been playing piano and keyboards for almost 40 years. Your bass line blows me away. So glad I found you!!!
Hey Scott, thanks for the comment. It's Nathan East's bass line...I'm just trying to keep up...thanks! :)
I just have to say thanks for this. I've been working through Footloose for months now and I've got it to the point where I can play it (more or less) as intended. I would never even have been able to attempt this without the video breakdown and especially the slower tempo run throughs of the latter sections.
Just amazing. Thank you so much.
Thank you very much for the message. It's a great feeling to learn a song. I'm so glad the video helped :) Thanks for letting me know, and keep it up! :)
Your like a magician. First you see the pick then you don't, then you do. Awesome playing and bass score. Thanks for sharing your talents with us. Cheers
haha...I should've came to you for some tips! :) Would have saved me time ;)
Perfection. Note while finger picking he has his actual pic held with his pinky and ring finger and brings it back. Beautiful.
Thank you very much Rich :) I had to practice moving the pick!
I'd never noticed the bass line before on this song. It's now on my 'to learn' list. Great lesson Greg.
Hey Tan! I'm really glad you like it. It's a good song to learn. Enjoy and thanks! :)
Picking-fingering transition is amazing.
Thanks...I had to practice it ;)
Keeping that groove after changes is so difficult! Great tabs Greg!
Hope they help...thanks!
Just watched this video for help in playing this song for a gig I have with a wedding band tomorrow night.
This has helped me immensely. Thank you so much. 😃
Hi William. That's great to hear...you're very welcome :) Have a good gig :)
I did thank you and apart from a couple of bum notes it was fine. Thank again. 😃
Man this one is tough as hell to play without messing up. Great vid and tabs, helping out a lot!
hehe...it can be a little tricky in some spots ;) I'm really glad it's helping out...thanks and have fun :)
That was awesome Greg! Thanks for sharing and your time transcribing that song. One of the greatest bass lines!
my pleasure...I'm really glad you liked it...thank you! :)
awesome - love the tone and attention to detail!
Hi Fraser, thank you very much :)
Wow! Absolutely superb, this has got to be a joy to play. Thank you! 👍
I used to play this in a "party band". It was fun to play...thanks :)
Like it's amazing how people can listen but still not hear.
I was a child I the 80s..so I was very much alive and aware when Footloose came out and was popular....
..But I swear it's only in the last year that I really *listened* to the song and heard how dynamic the bassline was and how thr bass player went off in the chorus.
And the realization led me to this video...thanks so much for doing justice to this under heralded Master class of bass playing.
This happens to me quite often. The Bowie song Space Oddity is one. Thanks for the comment :)
Absolutely brilliant transcription and playing! The best I could find! Thank you Sir!
hi Etienne! You're very kind...thank you. I hope you enjoy it :)
@@BassCovers not kind, all factual ;)
Nice work Greg... perfect.
thanks very much :)
Great job in nailing it down, Greg!

Hi Kevin, thank you! You should...give it a go! :)

Very good!

What a bass line, I love every thing about it!! ✌️☺️
I'm glad you liked it...thanks!
@@BassCovers No problem!! ✌️☺️
Very nice bass part! Nathan East amzing bass guitar player
That's correct. It was Nathan East.
Great job.
thank you Virtus :)
Def a tough one. Tried the chorus for the first time this afternoon. Albeit I played it SLOOOOWLY, I got it. I just now need to speed it up. Thanks for the cover!!!
My pleasure Amalie :) Keep at it...you'll get it ;)
Excellent! (Thought i'd already put that).
Glad you liked it...thank you! :)
Awesome!
Thanks!
This is so fast lol , I only started playing 17 months ago and I love the song and thought wow ; this one is going to be a real challenge and yes indeed it's a real one !
This is a pretty tough song to take for only playing for 17 months. I like your ambition. Give yourself time and keep picking away at it. Don't be afraid to slow it down! Good luck and have fun :)
Man serious job!!
hey Coach! :) Thanks man...cheers ;)
Your so good!!!!! I like your videos. Ty
Hi Aaron, thank you very much :)
Wow - Very Nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
Amazing...
hey Max...glad you liked it...thanks :)
Thks a lot for this tutorial vid !
Hi Javic! My pleasure :)
Amazing! Perfect! Thx! =)
my pleasure :)
Damm man thanks thats awesome !
No problem 👍 Thanks :)
Great video. I've only ever played this on guitar and never knew the bass line in the chorus was so complex. A lot of major pentatonic "Motown" lines there. Very under-stated in the song. Another song with an insanely underrated bass line is Wake Me Up Before You GoGo (Deon Estus). Thanks for the lesson Greg
Glad you liked it, thank you! Yes, that bass line by Deon Estus is a good one too! Thank you :)
Grandeeeeeeeeee! Great!!!!!!
thank you mirko! :)
Muy bueno!!
thanks!
Great video
thanks! ;)
Hey there buddy, I've gotten a lot of use from this video of yours. This is great. Unfortunately I wish i didn't have to use this but this song is a killer. Very accurate, and the slower clip at the end really helps slow guys like me. Cheers!😎
Cool...I'm glad it helped. Keep it up...thanks!
Oh FFS, I had to learn this song for a pit band in high school. It’s been my show off/warm up song ever since. Just wanted to find an isolated bass track only to be crushed to find out we must have transposed it to G for the singer and now I have to re learn the whole effin song.
haha...kind of a bummer. But it'll be good for you ;)
Had to do it, in G, for a show. Nightmare.
I had no idea this song had such an intricate bass line
hehe...it sure does :)
excelent!!!
hi Tino...thanks!
Thank you
my pleasure :)
impecable man!
thanks man!
Wild
thanks!
CHRIST this is fun!
hehe...I used to play it in a "party band". It is fun to play :)
Parabéns toca muito
obrigado :)
wow!!!!
Thank you!
Nice.
thanks :)
Muito bom 👍
cheers!
Wow 😳🙏
thank you! :)
@@BassCovers you welcome brother 🙏
OMG!!!
My attitude towards "Footloose" - ugh another 80's pop tune.. but HOLY SHIT THAT BASSLINE IS OUT OF THIS WORLD!! NATHAN EAST NATHAN EAST NATHAN EAST
haha...it's a good line he came up with :)
grazie
cheers!
1:22 magics a pick from nowhere
what was the reason for the pick? Great vid!
It sounded like parts of it was played with a pick. Thanks :)
I've always loved the bass line from the song You're the One that I want from the movie Grease. Its such a good bass line! Could you do that one?
I've always liked that one too! I'd be glad to do that one for you...thanks! :)

it's funny how us bass nerds love alot of the same songs.. lol
@@CaptainsChannel58 What's a bass nerd? I play bass and love these songs, but I just consider myself a bass player. 🙂
Nathan East wrote that? Makes sense what a beast
That's a good question. I'm not sure if he came up with that line or not...hmmm?
I think you are just an incredible bass player and teacher. Wow! Could you please do Billie Jean by Michael Jackson. I know it's simple, but so good. Thank you sir.
Hi Mr Rich :) Thank you very much. You're very kind :) As for your request, I'm sorry, I'm going to pass on that one...thanks!
wow
hi T Yap! Thank you :)
Do you have a website or something were I can download the tab? Really love the video, I've watched it over and over again😅, But It would be perfect to see it on paper.
Hi Jonny, thanks for the comment. Please see above in the video description. Thanks! :)
@@BassCovers
Thanks dude
This bass has 5 strings?
You have a decent nail on your thumb "pick" for that tone?
hey Wolf...I was just using a regular guitar pick.
Greg Fairweather and then you drop it? Just subscribed today, great content man!
I put it the palm of my hand for the first part and then dropped it for the rest of the tune. Thanks for subscribing! :)
What does the x mean?
ghost note
Amazing man can you do bob seger live tryin to live my life without you
Thank you Travis, I'll check it out...thanks!
@@BassCovers thanks brother I believe it ain't hard for a bassist like you I've learned quite a bit of bass from you keep up the great work
Thanks Travis, I checked out the song. The bass line is similar to that of the Long Run...hmmm :)
@@BassCovers yeah very similar just the octave notes during the last 2 and a half minutes of the song is trouble lol
Did Nathan East play this song with a pick?
I wasn't there when it was recorded, but it sounds like a pick in that section to me :)
@@BassCovers Oh, just a section. Got it.
I think I've heard of that Nathan East dude.
hehe ;)
Its all fun and games until 1:04
hehe :)
yeah i dont think im ever going to memorize this
hehe...I don't think many listeners would know ;)
You got all of the notes correct but the original plays a lot more quick octaves all over the place. Like Low, high Low, High. low high
Matt Nes'heim - Let’s see your transcription and we’ll compare the difference ... I think there maybe some type of octave pedal used during the chorus, as well as playing the actual octaves on the bass.
Clean your fretboard ... or play tunes with a low C and C# so the dirt gets evenly distributed ;)
Thanks for your transcription and playing. Very close to the groovy original!
BTW: Nathan East played at least at Live Aid the whole bassline as far as I can see without a pick ( ... but, oh those times on a Steinberger ;) ), see czcams.com/video/34yQWzcDk-E/video.html
haha...thanks for your comments. The fretboard was getting a little dirty on this one...but not as dirty as its been on others! :) I've since cleaned it...thanks ;)
I saw the "live aid" version. But since I was doing a play along to the studio version I opted to try and get what to me sounded like him using a pick?
Cheers and thanks again :)
I can't tell if Nathans original recording was played with a pick at the intro part. In the Live Aid video he moves at this part his hand close to the bridge to get a sharper attack, which could be a sign that he tried to reproduce the sound of the studio recording. But maybe he did the same in the studio and that, mixed with the twang from the guitar tricks my ears to hear a pick. Being more a finger-style player I try to avoid a pick whenever possible, but there are these "pick-songs" ...
As for the studio, anything goes. He could've played the intro days before on a different bass with a pick or not...who knows? :)
I hear ya about picks, I usually try to avoid them too...but there are some tunes that require it. I'm glad to be at least familiar with using one if I ever need it :)
Its a good bass lesson but i would have used a four string so beginners don‘t get confused
It's not a beginner level song...
Im going Bananas trying to follow the notation 😅😅😅😅😅😅
It takes some practice, but it does get easier...keep it up! :)
This is very well transcribed and played part! Well done.
On another note, what a shitty bassline. Sounds like the guy was about to overdose on cocaine while recording it. Disappointing to find out it was a name like Nathan East doing it.
Hi Red, thanks for the comment. I'm not hearing the same thing as you though...I like the bass line he came up with :) No worries though...different strokes ;) Thanks!
Jesus Christ. Might have to dumb it down.
He's not playing shit
what do you mean?
