For all the love Cubase is getting, I hope it takes a few lessons from Studio One. The way Studio One has implemented Folder Busses is incredible. Love how visually and organisationally intuitive it is. Love how when you create or move tracks into the folder busses, their colour gets automatically updated, and also the track automatically gets routed to the folder bus. Studio One also has such powerful macros. I have macros to add plugins and instruments. And I can add all my favourite plugins in such quick succession because of macros. I find Studio One's workflow a lot quicker and more intuitive than Cubase's.

Josh, I have been a Die Hard S1 user for years as it is one of the easiest DAWs to use on the market. But……..I must say my friend you may be on to something. I have vouched for years that nothing would pull me away from S1. Until……..I downloaded the trial of Cubase Pro 13. Man they have everything that kept me on S1. Drag and drop, VST thumbnails, and there VSTi’s are far superior than Presence and Mai Tai (even though I use Arturia, Omni, and Kontakt). I learned that S1 does not even use all of the Performance and Efficiency cores on my M1 Max chip where Cubase does. I will miss the project page though. I just wished that Impact and Groove Agent functioned like Logics DMD. If Cubase adds that feature and also a project page like S1, they will a lot of S1 users JUMPING SHIP!

The recent demo of "Tricomp" left me nearly "typeless".
That thingy has no indicators of what is happening there and where, but is actually much better done with Artutia's VCA65, which can control high and low end as well.

    • @oupahens9219
      @oupahens9219 Před 5 měsíci

Presonus seems to go back to the term: Use U ears. Yes, I use ears, a digital compressor or whatever they even sell as extras, has no indication of what is happening. Cool, what?
Nobody knows what is happening with these cheap compressors, which U will get when U are a slave of Presonus. Just play them by ear. And anyway, they suck.
The best compressor is the stock one of Presonus: No colouring, precise control of attack, release, etc, mappable/punchable with an external calculator to the microsecond. You still need an external calculator though. Which is Middle Ages from the 9ties.

Main DAW was S1 from v6 due to their massively improved video implementation. But this 6.6 update has just exposed the stench of big corporate greed so much I have to turn my back on them at last. I got on very well with S1. Their tempo mapping ability blows everyone else incl LP out of the water and I shall miss them a lot. But enough is enough. You've switched DAWs as much as I have lol. I tried to switch to cubase 12 from S1 about the same time you were trying to a couple years ago, but I didn't last long. It's undoubtedly the most feature rich daw, but the majority of that i didnt need or use. My main gripe with it was that it was a pain to navigate around and work within the timeline. Just not very intutive. Ive owned all of the major daws now (except for logic pro now, which I might give a try at some point now that i have a macbook), and I always return to Reaper. Tho i still own S1(5), bitwig 5, and FL20, I mainly use NI Maschine as a base for crafting ideas anyhow, and it doesn't integrate very good with any of the DAWs no matter wich one im using. So I just lay ideas down in maschine software, then use it as a multi track vst inside the daw from there. Usually that's Reaper. For recording audio and mixing/mastering it's simple and straightforward, and handles CPU resources the best. Plus I love the "one type of track that can be used for anything" approach. No more dedicated instrument tracks vs, audio tracks, vs buss tracks (ect.) nonsense. This is the digital age, theres no reason for daws to have the built in limitations that analog boards had lol. And even tho Reaper sucks for midi, I use Maschine for the heavy lifting with midi anyways. I only use the DAW midi to add finishing touches here and there.

There are also chord pads which I only recently discovered and now I used them. I still need to play the chords the real way first to see what inversions I might want to use but those can be programmed into the chord pads too. You will discover that Cubase is excellent for both MIDI and mixing. You won't need two DAWs anymore and the majority of the stock plugins are every bit as good as Frequency EQ. You get several of each thing too. There are like 6 EQs, Compressors etc.

I've made my decision that my 2nd DAW is going to be Cubase 13 Elements / Cubase 13 Artist.
It's been quite a hot minute to make my final decision to choose the perfect 2nd DAW along with Mixcraft 10.5 Pro Studio.
I've though out using Reaper 7, Cakewalk, Waveform 13 Free, Studio One 6.6, Magix Music Maker.
But Cubase 13 Elements was the one to go for. I'm definitely looking forward to trying out in the foreseeable future, If all goes well. Then the Elements version will be 2nd primary DAW.
Then later down the pipeline. I'll upgrade to Cubase 13 Artist, The Artist version has unlimited MIDI, Audio & Instrument tracks.
Studio One will try it's best to outlast Cubase. And it's my own opinion, Cubase 13 blows Studio One 6.6 out the window.

I get it. I was torn between Cubase and S1 and finally decided on S1 because of the price and a few workflow preferences in S1 I prefer - pitch/stretch algos are set by track and not by event which saves a lot of time and frustration, event fx with macros work with shortcuts (instantly adding specific plugins on an event selection), Cubase has a bit of a cumbersome method with regards to this. folders converted to busses and tracks nested neatly underneath the busses is another S1 feature I can't live without. the S1 inspector fader, inserts are huge when stretched open and the cubase inspector is underwhelming in this regard since I mix in the arranger window. coming from reaper I don't even consider built in plugins or virtual instruments. there are a bunch of buggy or weird workflow things I really don't like about S1 though. I really dislike the fact that cubase change the event/item/region color when moving it - it's like a flash and then I wonder, did it move or not - weird. all that said, I probably would've gone with Cubase if not for the price since I really like variaudio and have an emotional connection with cubase since I worked with it for many years in other studios.

One thing I say to people who ask about Reaper all the time...... It's the most stable DAW that will pretty much run on a potato and run very well on said potato. If you have your own collection of virtual instruments and plug-ins you really can't go wrong with it. I just REALLY like the chord track and the alignment tool along with a bunch of other features Cubase has. I can talk trash about a lot of different DAWs but reaper is not one of them. It does what it does and is very reliable.

I was still on trial and tested the alignment feature with an old project's vocals and it worked great. Then, on the day when I wanted to use it for an actual edit/mix, for some inexplicable reason, the alignment feature did not work. It added the stretch markers and moved them, but it was totally out of time making it worse. I made sure I did it right and tried again and again... Needless to say, it felt like a great loss since I was counting on this feature to speed up my workflow and without dependability, I closed Cubase on the spot and went back to Reaper (which I have abandoned now not because there is anything wrong with Reaper but for personal reasons).

Realistically, any DAW is fine as long as you understand how your plugins work and what workflow you like. The biggest turn off for me would be the whole subscription stuff for DAWs, like what Pro Tools is doing and now Studio One. It may not be great for hobbyists, but might be fine if you're already doing audio for a living or make enough money to cover the monthly or yearly cost to have everything up to date with your DAW. In terms of ARA, I'm sure other DAWs may do it better. If anything, I think the ARA Vocalign is better than the stock audio alignment in Cubase. I'm always editing vocals with Variaudio.

Your vids have been great on this topic - I was on S1 5 Artist, and have switched over to Cubase 13 Pro recently - there's no reasonable way to upgrade from 5 Artist to 6 Artist or Professional. I would have to buy a new 6 Artist licence. I found that to be questionable. It's not the only reason I switched though.
I trialled Cubase 13 Pro on a whim and initially hated all the pop-up windows but quickly found my way around that and think it's actually really good for dual monitors. Long story short, similar paths, seeing these vids and then this one now as I've basically decided to fully commit to Cubase 13 Pro is timely.
A couple of things in Cubase stood out to me - it has ARA integration - in this video, you mentioned Cubase has VariAudio and it's own VocAlign thing, which it does, but if you're more comfortable with Melodyne or VocAlign specifically - enable the Extension for them in the bar up near the top of the screen (it's like the 3rd bar down, at the far right).
That will let you choose whatever ARA plugin you want, and you can use them just as you did in Studio One. Super cool. You can also bring up these same extensions in the tracks inspector tab by hitting the little arrow next to the track name to expand it.
Being able to rearrange where the arranger track is feels like a game-changer itself.. maybe Studio One allows for this, but I haven't figured it out.. in Cubase, it's as simple as dragging the arranger track to where I want. This already feels super handy for me, as someone that prefers to one-shot most of my recordings. It's nice to put the arranger track directly above the instrument I'm recording - in Studio One, I had issues with visibility of the arranger track, when there was a lot of tracks and other things I might have had up.
The multi-tap delay in Cubase is fantastic. I absolutely love it.
I vastly prefer the channel strip in Cubase - being able to easily rearrange the order is handy af, IDK how to do this in S1 (if it's possible?), but in Cubase it was simple, you just.. move them around, lol.
I could also be wrong on this but Cubase has built-in, easy to see and use meters - no additional plugins required for keeping tabs on loudness/LUFs etc.. I haven't explored the control room aspect much yet..
..there's just a lot to love in Cubase 13 Pro, and it seems to better suit my workflow.
Enjoyed the vid. Actually wished it was a bit longer and went more in-depth on the differences and things you like/dislike when comparing the two, but realistically that could be a vid that goes for hours. lol.
EDIT: ofc now that I've written the above, I've had Cubase 13 Pro crash on me multiple times today. cool.

Things i like about cubase are that its been there right from the 1990s with Pro Tools, every other DAW is trying to be Pro Tools or Cubase its that simple. Cubase is owned by Yamaha, so the stability of the future roadmap is in the hands of a multi billion $$$ company a music company, not an interest finance group like Pro tools.
Cubase obviously doesn't appeal to the beat making, EDM,Trap, hip-hop, Drill community like FL Studio and Ableton, it leans more to people mixing Guitar music and composing, but People are waking up to Cubase as a final destination to mix in, a lot of people are coming around to Cubase after years of being in other DAWS and there getting better mixes from Cubase.

After 3 months with S1 it's too much of an uphill battle. Many great things, but very basic (important) things like undo, recording midi in time (not early) and midi quantize all do not really work correctly. Frustrating to say the least and huge time wasters. I tested Cubase today and all these functions work perfectly. I am seriously considering jumping ship and getting Cubase (in spite of the quirks) since arranging should not be hindered by essential broken functionality.

13 has been running really smooth on my M1 iMac. I've not tested it on my windows machine yet. I'll be sure to update when I do.

question: if the eq is dynamic, why the need to side chain frequency?

    • @joshuabutlermusic
      @joshuabutlermusic  Před 5 měsíci +2

I like to side-chain my bass guitars or sub basses at 80hz and below and have my kick drum "duck" the frequency. So it ducks the frequency and not the volume of the kick itself. It's different for every situation of course but it makes a lot of room for the kick to cut thru without making the mix muddy or "cluttered" sounding. You can do the same thing with the FabFilter Pro Q 3.

Cubase is the best for Super Engineers.

Unfortunate that touch Automation is broken, so switching to Cubase is a no go for me.

I don't think Cubase is on an upward trajectory. Good luck. I use Nuendo and I'm not optimistic with where this software will be in several years.

tried cubase 13 pro, tried to like it but to me studio one beats it hands down in a lot of ways.

I've never heard of a producer with DECADES of studio experience under his belt completely defend or dismiss a DAW because of a stock plugin. EVER. Generally they use a DAW because of personal workflow or because that DAW is the standard tool of choice where they work. Imagine an engineer getting flustered in the middle of a busy session because the stock EQ in Pro Tools can't accomplish what he wanted in a mix (and also, his forgetting about the $20K worth of 3rd party plugins in his FX folder. Pssst... Fabfilter, anyone?).

Subscription daw's are killing music production I switched from reason studio cause of this to ableton live never been more happier but looks like it's becoming a trend sad

I really hope the trend of subscription stops. It's trying to become the new normal and I will NOT accept that. Call me old fashioned in my 30's but I like the days of actually OWNING what I pay for and not being shorthanded on features because I will not pay a subscription.
