  • In the last vlog, we trekked to the breathtaking Chukail Meadows. Now, join us as we embark on an exciting journey to Mahodand Lake. We booked a jeep for 15K from Mankial to Mahodand, which also covered our return trip. This vlog is packed with insights on the road conditions, a travel guide, and tips on things you can do in Kalam, Swat, culminating in our exploration of Mahodand Lake.I flew a drone over Mahodand Lake, capturing its stunning beauty from above, and got some cool shots using Insta 360.
The adventure begins with a 3.5-hour jeep track from Mankial, taking us through stunning landscapes. From Kalam to Mahodand, it takes around 3 hours. At Mahodand Lake, we enjoyed boating, indulged in cold mangos, and sipped on tea, making for a perfect lakeside experience.
However, the trip had its challenges. On our way back to Mankial, our jeep tire got punctured, turning our journey into a tough midnight adventure. It took us 3 hours to get back to Mankial from the point where the tire got punctured.
Mahodand Lake (Urdu: مہوڈنڈ جھیل; Pashto: د ماهو ډنډ - "Lake of Fishes") is a stunning lake located in the upper Usho Valley, about 35 kilometers from Kalam in Swat District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The lake, accessible by a four-wheel drive vehicle, is a popular spot for fishing and boating.
    *Geography*
Mahodand Lake lies at the foothills of the Hindu Kush mountains at an elevation of 2,865 meters (9,400 feet). Surrounded by meadows, mountains, and dense forests, the lake’s banks are covered with pines and pastures, serving as a camping site during the summer. The lake is fed by melting glaciers and springs from the Hindu Kush mountains, giving rise to Ushu Khwar, a major left tributary of the Swat River.
    *Flora and Fauna*
In winter, the lake freezes and is covered by heavy snow. During summer, it is surrounded by a carpet of alpine flowers like geum, blue poppy, potentilla, and gentian. The lake is also encircled by diverse pinus species, home to wild birds. The lake is rich in trout fish, offering ideal opportunities for licensed anglers.
    *Fishing and Camping*
Mahodand Lake’s waters are divided into small and large streams, once teeming with brown and rainbow trout introduced by the former ruler of Swat State. Unfortunately, over-fishing and illegal methods like electrocution, dynamiting, and large nets have significantly reduced the fish population.
Swat, often referred to as the "Switzerland of the East," is renowned for its surreal natural beauty. Mahodand Lake is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, located 40 kilometers from Kalam in the Ushu Valley, part of the Hindu Kush mountain range. The lake, situated 9,400 feet above sea level, stretches over 2 kilometers in length.
To reach Mahodand Lake, an early morning start is essential. The journey takes around 3-4 hours, with a mix of metal roads and rocky, gravel paths. It's advisable to hire a jeep rather than taking your own car to avoid damage. The path, despite its imperfections, offers spectacular views of forests, rivers, and high-rise mountains.
Upon arrival, the lake's beauty is mesmerizing. Horses roam freely, and there are campsites available. You can hire a boat to explore the lake up close or simply relax and enjoy the serene environment. If the weather is clear, you might even catch a glimpse of Falak Ser, the highest mountain in the valley at 19,416 feet.
Despite its beauty, the area around the lake suffers from litter left by tourists. If you visit, please bring a garbage bag and avoid littering. Consider picking up some trash to help preserve this natural wonder.
