Hook: Daiichi 1190 size # 16
Thread: Semperfli nanosilk 18/0 brown
Body : peacock primary wing feather quill
wings : coq de Leon Corzuno oscuro
Hackle : Whinting farms saddle brown

Tying dry flies with spider rooster hackle have become rare in recent years (sign of the times?) replaced by materials floating lower (CDC, hairs ..etc ..), the hackle being used only in parachute style, which has a good and lower flotation, and allowing at the same time, a visual indicator. The hackle stacker tying method, concerns wrapping the hackle on the thread itself and is used mainly to represent the wings of emergers.
The caddis presented here has these characteristics of excellent and very low flotation, destinated to fish the calms; small in size, it is light and reflects the light wonderfully thanks to the Coq de Leon fibers
I only tie this pattern in size # 16 with a long shank, which is pretty much the most common size of caddis, . (I keep the largest sizes for bulkier pattern such as with deer, CDC, dubbing etc.) and overall it gives me excellent results as it is, throughout the season and in all types of rivers!
The main difficulty of this tying is wrapping the hackle on the thread (in triple thickness 6:47) which must be done up then down 8:17; the fibers adjust themselves thereafter.
It is also good to position the Coq de Leon fibers in a half of a circle (you must be able to see through ...), with your fingernail (4:43), and especially to tighten the thread very strongly immediately after! It must not move any more !! These Coq de Leon feathers are expensive, and those who are not used to this kind of tying , should perhaps practice first with less expensive rooster feathers! ...

Les montages de mouches sèches avec des collerettes araignée en plumes de coq se sont raréfiés ces dernières années ( signe des temps ?) au profit de matériaux flottant plus bas (CDC, poils ..etc..),le coq n'étant plus utilisé qu'en montage parachute, ce qui lui permet une bonne flottaison ,plus basse et permettant par la même ,un indicateur visuel . La méthode du " paraloop ", hackle stacker en américain d'où elle est originaire , s'affranchi de l'indicateur en enroulant le hackle sur le fil de montage et est utilisée le plus souvent pour représenter les ailes des émergentes.
Le sedge présenté ici a donc ces caractéristiques d'excellente flottaison très basse ,aussi il sera plutôt destiné à pêcher les zone calmes ;de petite taille , il est léger et reflète bien la lumière grâce aux fibres Pardo
Je ne monte ce modèle qu'en taille # 16 à hampe longue ,ce qui représente assez bien la taille la plus courante des sedges, ( je réserve les plus grandes tailles de sedges à des montages plus fournis du type chevreuil ,CDC, dubbing etc..) et puisqu'avant tout il me donne d'excellents résultats tel qu'il est, et ce,tout le long de la saison et dans tout type de rivières !
La principale difficulté de ce montage est l'enroulement du hackle sur le fil de montage ( en triple épaisseur 6:47 ) qu'il faut veiller à enrouler en montant puis en descendant 8:17; les fibres s'ajustant d'elles même par la suite .
J'aime bien positionner les fibres Pardo en arc de cercle (on doit pouvoir voire à travers... ), avec l'ongle (4:43), et il faut alors serrer très fortement le montage immédiatement après ! Cela ne doit plus bouger !! Ce sont des plumes qui sont chères, et ceux qui n'ont pas l'habitude de ce genre de montage des ailes en toit avec des fibres pourront peut être s'exercer avec des plumes de coq moins coûteuses !...

When cutting gsp threads pull tight onto thread and go as close as you can to the knot with scissors blade and push... Dont snip.... Slice through it. I will show it better in my next video...

A very enjoyable tie and a great colour combination. I use doubled up Veniard Super Stretch Floss to wind the hackle on and then stretch it before tying it in which makes the hackle rise above the hook and has not come undone to date. Your method although not stretchy is probably more durable especially with gsp. Keep up the great presentations and patterns which are inspirational. Regards from down-under in NZ.
Hi john and thank you very much for your suggestion ! good idea with this super strech floss ! i will try it for my next hackle stacker emerger ! the main reason why i choose the triple loop thread method is the fineness of the 18/0 nanosilk ! i don't want a thick thorax at the end as i had to use many thread wraps to secure strongly the Coq the Leon Wings which is the most important step for this pattern! As you see there is no place for a dubbing in the thorax or anything else.. There 's also no need here to make the hackle rising above the hook like we usually do for mayflies emergers , and my idea here was to flatten the hackle as much as possible to represent a caddis fly floatting plated on the water surface... thanks again for your interesting comment John ! i wish you great fishing in your beautiful country !

Merci infiniment Erick ! c'est un peu plus délicat qu'avec du parapost ( ca glisse un peu surtout avec la nano silk en 18/0 !) mais ça se remet bien en place après et quand on le rabat vers l'avant ça donne une autre allure qu'un parachute classique .
C'est un coupe ongle avec le bout incurvé et très pointu et fin ! je l'utilise depuis toujours et quand on m'a posé la question pour la première fois , il m'était impossible de dire si je l'avait acheté dans un flyshop ou non !! ... c'est la marque T-PEL...qui apparemment existe toujours ... alors effectivement je ne peux pas m'en passer...et même si j'ai des ciseaux très fins et performants ! Super pour couper à ras les fibres et autres résidus de coupes !! c'est uniquement avec le fil nanosilk qu'il a ses limites mais ce fil est particulièrement compliqué (il a les défauts de ses qualités !) et il faudrait le trancher plus que le couper ... just a few clarifications for those reading your comment:
_all the flies that I present here have been used for many years and sometimes by other fishermen than myself and some of whom are fishing guides...
_obviously you don't know the exceptional qualities of Coq de Leon fibers, which by their rigidity, and even more so positioned, bring a unique balance! and the same for the hackle positioned flat!
_it is not because a fly does not have so-called "hydrophobic" materials that it will not float, and it will float all the more if it is light and not overloaded with materials
_ I never grease my flies (for personal reasons which I will spare you here) and this model so flat placed on the water, has a very effective low flotation!
Finally, if you prefer the "cork" effect to fish stronger currents, this is not what this model is intended for, which I explain very clearly in the description, if you had bothered to read it!
