Thanks so much for posting this. For someone who is interested in the history of football codes and of rugby in particular this is a very fascinating piece of film. Anyone who also thinks so should check the other BFI clips like "Hunslet v Leeds 1901".
I can see why they went to the play-the-ball rule. A scrum after every tackle makes this so slow and lumbering, not to mention taxing on the forwards.

Odd to think that my Great Grandad, possibly the first of my line to be born in Oldham, wasn't born for another two years after this was filmed.
Once or twice the scrum forms and the ball is played before either the tackler or tackled player has got up!
Great film but who won the game?
