I like the BMX style bars much more than the old ones.
I prefer to have the battery behind the seat post. Between the location of the battery and the water bottle, it kind of limits the step thru feature.
Discount code not working for me any suggestions
I hate to say it but the folks at Rad really screwed up with this RadExpand 5. Compared to the Mini you lose the front end suspension, the ability to raise the speed limit, it doesn't even have a speedometer, and what do you gain? It's 5 pounds lighter? So in reality they phased out a very popular bike that sold for 1499.00 and replaced it with this new bike with less capability for 1499.00. I know one thing, I own a Mini 4 and I won't be replacing it with this bike ever.
I also think it's worth mentioning the plastic sprocket guard. No LED screen, plastic peddles, no height adjustment on handlebars, lesser quality derailleur and brakes. 4 levels of peddle assist instead of 5. The big sell are the 4” tires that used to be standard on the Mini. I don't see one really good reason anyone would want this bike at the same price point as the Old Mini 4.
It folds though. That's a huge advantage
@@NaeMuckle So does the Mini.
Yeah.... seems like a downgrade tbh
At least you get bottle tube vassets!
I got my RADEXPAND5 for $1299.00 a couple of months ago. I added the tire armor, the suspension seat post and a rear basket. The accessories are well made. I really enjoy riding it and it is great exercise when I want exercise. My main reason that I got it was as a backup vehicle and for trips to the store and to visit family or friends without putting wear and tear or using gas for my vehicles. It is much cheaper than an extra car so I would pay $1499.00 for it. I don’t have any issues with not having suspension in the front end since my bicycles never had suspension. I ride it any chance I get to get smaller items. I am very happy with it and people keep saying how nice the whistle version looks. The folding has in very handy a few times.
My partner and I have Rad minis with about 400 miles so far. We love them, except for the weight and bulk (when folded). Hard to understand why Rad replaced the suspension fork to save weight and then added a rack, adding back weight. We also tried using big tubs to contain our bikes but found them really hard to grip and lift into the SUV. And once inside the SUV, the tubs slid around a lot and even tilted over, damaging our bike’s headlamps. What seems to work best is loading the bikes in upright (our SUV is tall) securing them side by side with bungie cord and then tucking them in with two moving blankets to keep them snug and secure. A process! I also don’t like the new indicator and much prefer the Rad mini screen to track speed/distance. I absolutely will not use my phone as I think that attaching a cell phone to a bike handle is a huge safety risk. I would be tempted to look down at a pop up text etc when it is dangerous enough sharing NJ roads with NJ drivers! (Also texting lol) However, it would be great if Rad added the time function to the screens. Now I am 5’10, 170 and Ken is 5’11, 180 - both strong guys, yet even we have a really hard time lifting and maneuvering our folded bikes. They are so bulky. We fail to see how a petite person might carry one onto a bus or subway…up three flights of stairs….into an office elevator…etc as Rad shows in their ads. Not possible. The good news is the Rad minis are the perfect size for us to ride…so much fun on and off the road! So while the ability to fold them is neat, tackling the heavy bulk is the next Rad challenge. Keep up these excellent Rad reviews.
Stop the sliding by using chocks and ratchet straps czcams.com/video/wH-5f0eiO3k/video.html
I'm still trying to decide what brand of folding bike to purchase. I was able to sit on a Rad Expand 5 at a recent RV show and I liked it except that they dropped the suspension fork. I just test rode a used Mini and may consider that for the old fork. I failed to pay attention to the screen on the Expand 5 as I focused on the handle bar style which I prefer to the T-bar. At 5' 1" I know that the hubby will be loading my bike, so no solo trips. He has a Vektron which is much lighter. I honestly think that we'll end up with a bike rack and ramp once we travel with them. Refresh my memory...does the mini have a walk mode? Thanks for your input.
Good feedback! Perhaps adding a static strap would be a good addition to your loading solution in case of heavy braking or an accident. Would hate to see those bikes go flying forward...
I just finished assembling my Radxpand 5 and found your review. Thanks for reinforcing what I already knew to be a good purchase.
It was a mistake removing the front suspension right after Lectric added one to theirs.
yep, lectric is better value
@@chtomlin
Unfortunately, some people complain that XP 2.0 has issue with the controller just after couple hundreds miles, and I’m not sure how much widely affected large scope of their bikes, hopefully not 🙏
I just bought 2 Lectrics. Can't wait to get them.
Even the brake ..its better hydraulic brakes
@@chtomlin do you know of Lectric has a twist throttle?
We just ordered ours a couple days ago! So excited! 🥰👍👍
Enjoy!
Thank you for this review. Been deciding between Lectric and rad and i preferred rad mini and now I'll be going with Lectric.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Enjoy your Lectric ebike!
You can still the get old model though.
@@smelly551 I don’t see the Rad Mini listed for sale anymore
Great video as usual! During the supply chain shortage, Rad started shipping any/all of their bike models with Radius brakes, microSHIFT shifter/derailleur, and on my October 2021 RadWagon 4 I even got a different brand of tool-less handlebar stem/riser. I don't mind the derailleur change and actually like the replacement stem/riser better, but the Radius brake levers aren't as nice (even though I'm sure the brakes themselves are fine). Rad actually sent me a warranty replacement left (front) brake lever and to my surprise it was a Tektro (oops)! The main thing I don't like about Radius is the brake sensor cable is too long (at least for the RadWagon 4) so it causes some relatively unsolvable cable management issues.
Very interesting. We, like you, didn't find a performance difference, but did miss the integrated bell.
@@EbikeEscape yes, I don't like having two different brands of brake levers (even though they're a pretty close appearance match), but since they warranty replaced the left brake lever, I ended up with the integrated bell! The non-integrated "consolation bell" they included with the Radius levers is REALLY low quality.
Build quality reminds me of a tank. I can definitely see military applications for a folding ebike like this. Great video review, thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Interesting that you lock into 7th gear and adjust the pedal assist accordingly. I hang out in assist level 1 and quite naturally go up and down through the gears like a regular bike. I up the assist when propulsion gets too tough. I wish there were a setting between zero and 1. That would be good.
In here looking at some older reviews I haven't seen. Watching advertisements for ya. Hope you get a few cents at payday from ads. 😁 Good job .
I was going to get this, but they just jacked up the price by 200 bucks.
Honestly not even worth it
Nice review. I am also 6' tall with a 32" inseam so I really appreciate how you fit. I suppose if you change to a suspension seat post, that will get you a couple more inches of height (this is what I would do). I really like that it does not have a suspension fork. In my view, they are waste and just not necessary... especially with 4 inch tires on a folding bike. I think this might be my next Radbike. Thank you.
Well done video. Sold my Rad Rover bike. Need a foldable E-bike. Think I will stick with a quality built bike. I will order the RadExpand 5!
Can't really go wrong with a Rad. -JT
What I don't understand about this thing is why they put the battery IN FRONT of the seat post? That makes it a bit harder to get your foot through? This is the only manufacturer that did it like that. Why? All the others placed the battery behind the seat post. It's a peculiar arrangement.
Looking forward for a head to head comparison within the rad expand 5 versus the espin nesta. Thanks so much
That headlight is pretty much the same as a $12 one on Amazon. The former headlight, although it had too tight of a beam pattern, had multiple LED's in the ring, and the primary LED was actually mounted to the finned heat sink that you see on top. It was a quality unit, and much more expensive than the new headlight. Another thing I noticed is that the Expand is slower than the RadMini ST, taking 12.2 seconds to get from 0 to 20mph. The RadMini did it in 9.2.
Oh wow i knew the former headlight was decent but didn't know it had that much care into it
Also is this one really slower!?
I have both Rad Mini 4 and the ST2 for my wife. Watching your review, I feel disappointed. I believe not too long ago they released the ST 2 and
now are discontinuing both models. The weight reduction is a plus but at the expense of components that are either reduced or missing is kind a letdown, I think. It feels like a natural response to a parts price increase or a lack of specific components. I like the screen display and the feedback you get from it on the mini 4 and ST2. The front absorbing shock is a plus. I will preface that statement by saying I'm in my early retirement years. Owners that bought in on the Mini 4 and ST 2 expect from Rad a certain value at that price point. I think that the Expand 5 at 1499.00 is lacking. Just my thoughts of their new offering.
Agree. Haven't purchased e bike, yet. Sat on an expand, and preferred the handlebars, but not interested in losing suspension fork! I may end up with a 2nd hand mini instead. I'm 5' 1" so this has been a challenge during my research phase. It is April and my plan for a bike for my 62nd bday in March has passed, but I need a new ride now. lol
If all your going to do is use the throttle then you might as well get a moped or motorbike. They might as well take the pedals off altogether and just put a running board if your not going to pedal.
Right but then technically it's not classified as a bike. No license required in most places.
After riding both the 5 and the older mini, yes the older gives a bit more ease on the hands due to the struts but the handle bars and post are way more comfortable since they tilt as well as raise and lower. The rest of the bike is basically identical to the step thru mini4.
So you preferred the handle bars on the Expand 5? I think that I prefer that shape to the T-bar and wonder if I decide on decide on purchasing a 2nd hand mini that I just looked at if I can purchase/swap the original handlebars out for the Expand 5 handlebars? I wish that I could find one back that has everything I'm looking for. lol
I like the BMX style handlebars, inclusion of rear rack and availability of BLACK color. I don’t like no front suspension and downgrade from LCD to LED display.
So the Lectric XP 2.0 got better, new suspension fork, narrower tires to improve range, wider handlebars, and Rad got worse. I went on Rad's site to buy the Rad Mini, and this downgrade is what they are offering. Odd.
The Mini unfortunately sold out not too long after this was released.
They just had a massive clearing sale on their old models- now is the time to get an older model like the mini if it's possible
I purchased the expand 5 to compliment my Rad Rover 5 that uses the same battery.
That's one thing that is great about buying the same brand of ebikes.
It sounds like all the changes were taking off features instead of adding. I'd rather buy the discontinued rad power mini for $1299 and get all the features that were taken off.
5pm impressive bike. Just bought one.❤
great video thank you
Glad it was helpful!
That rear light is the same as the one on my A.R. Kepler. The Kepler however has blinkers built into that same rear brake light.
How do you compare the ride quality between the mini with the front fork shocks and the expand without?
Hi. like the idea of the tote box. Being trying to source one everywhere but no luck. Where did you get yours from please? Great review BTW.
Has anyone else found the little tool they include for the rear brake adjustment just a little funny!?
I just watched the new Rad Expand5 video so I ordered 2 of these. Then I saw the new review of the Lectric mid-drive with initial price for about $300 more...500W motor, but it's mid drive; features like LCD display, front adjustable shock forks, and leather grips, are nice to see "standard" on the Lectric; the metal fenders (not sure advantage?) and extra weight disadvantage IMHO. 2 Batteries nicely placed and kind of hidden vs the Rad where they look like an afterthought in that they stick out like sore thumb. Not a big deal. Question for me is which one is better, cost aside?
Obvious battery to me means removal is a theft deterrent. I like it that way. Unless you get somthing with a crazy expensive battery integration to make it look like a normal bike then that's to me a benifit. Not a detriment.
Your CZcams channel is one big reason (maybe main reason) I bought a Mini ST sight unseen (I love it btw). Question: is the rack you purchased for your mini identical to the one that comes on the Expand5? There seem to be subtle differences. Cheers and thanks.
Thanks! Glad you like it. I'm not 100% sure, best bet would be to ask Rad directly.
Yes they are the same
Do you think that the bike would fit in that bin with the front rack and basket attached?
Enjoy all your reviews! Do you think a suspension seatpost would give you a few extra inches of seat height?
Also, for the price of their lcd display, one could get the Eggrider v2 display and be able to change a range of controller settings. Hope you consider testing the eggrider one day...
Mark, the suspension seat post will definitely give you extra height on your seatpost, and add some much needed comfort, but that doesn't eliminate the biggest issue about the bike and that's that it's too short in body... Terrible fit and ride... Absolutely horrible for anyone over 5"7...
But, it’s absolutely perfect for us shorter riders. I’m 5’1” and eBikes are so hard to find that fit us shorter riders perfectly. Even eBikes that state they are for 4’1” and up can still be too big and heavy for us shorter riders. Comfort is everything for us shorter people to feel safer and secure. I have the same issue with non eBikes. Even smaller frames can still be a challenge for women shorter than 5’3”.
@@MegUSN52 Couldn't agree more, Meg!! I'm 5' 1" at least I always was, at 62 I may have shrunk. lol Anyway, I'm driving myself crazy reviewing and trying to decide what bike to purchase. I always had the same issue with regular bikes. At this height I was always told a 24" wheel kid bike, but was told that I'd have to pedal harder to keep up with others on a "real bike". So, still own a Trek mountain bike from the 80's that is a guys frame and time to get a step thru...still a challenge to find something that fits. Seat to handle bar reach is a challenge. I have a bad neck and carpal tunnel so need to sit upright without forward weight on hands. My Trek makes my hands go numb! What did you purchase?
❤😢❤ rad expand five junker. I hut a small bump in the city street on way to pist office .now I need new pedals, brakes, rear inner tube, and for the tire rim to be readjusted or replaced depending how bad the damage is to fix
I would probably buy this except that they changed the front suspension to a solid fork. Shock absorbtion on rough roads or going off road seems like a downgrade for this model. it would be helpful to mention ride characteristics in these reviews.
I like the handlebars and adjustability vs straight handlebars which are not as comfortable.
I have a bike with suspension and the rad expand. I'd suggest deflating the tire a bit. Makes a huge difference! Prefer that actually
Rad took two steps back. No front fork suspension.
Hey, just a quick and very small note. I just got a brand new RadExpand 5. It looks like they ended up integrating the bell back into the brake and went back to the Shimano shifter. Additionally, you said you wanted flash on the brake light. There's a physical button on the brake light to turn on flashing mode.
Great notes. Thank you for adding that to the comments. -JT
Great review im undecided as to buying the Rad or the hygge vester step through bike in the UK? Could you please advise.
Hi there, never heard of the latter so unfortunately I can't help.
Should have NOT removed the front suspension.
Cool handlebar! But, $1599 for a bike with 750w48v14ah, and no suspension seems a bit high to me...
Can I add on the LCD display to it? Is it hard to install? Good review by the way.
Absolutely - appreciate it if you use the link in the description before you but it.
I ordered one a few weeks ago and didn't opt to purchase the front basket or mirror. I just don't see how you can fold the bike with additional accessories. Thanks for the review!
Thanks for watching - in our accessories video I should have tried folding it with the front rack on.
For the brake light, they should do a burst when first applied, I have that on my motorcycle.
We agree. That would be a fairly low effort option to add I believe.
Would you be able to provide me the following measurement of the RadExpand 5. While folded in the tote, could you give me the overall height with the seat post down? I would appreciate it!
Those bikes look like they could fit another 4-5 inches of battery length .. I wonder if you can get a 20 ah in there if the seat is just a couple inches over minimum height?
Can you add the display and the remote from the rad rover 6 to the rad expand
What is the weight capacity of the rear cargo rack? Not sure if my 70 lbs kid can sit there even though passenger is not recommended.
So we really need/want a folding bike. Our son would often be with us, so we need one bike to have a passenger seat pad. He is only 47 lbs, is it not possible for a seat pad on the RadExpand 5?
I have limited space so I need a folding bike, but also would like to transport a child. Would you recommend a trailer instead of a child seat? If so, which one would you recommend that is light, compact, and able to be towed comfortably with the Expand5?
For what its worth, I bought a Burley bike trailer back in the late 80's and was 1st in my town and considered a novelty. Now they are everywhere and many to choose from. I had a one and two year old so it was great, until baby #3 came shortly after and I still had to add a child seat. I preferred the trailer and still do because if the rider were to tip over, the trailer stays upright (at least my Burley did). I later had a Burley Tail Wagon to tote a dog around that had mobility issues. Yours is an old post, but someone may find this input useful. Happy Bikeing!
What measurement are those tote dimensions in?
Do they not come with folding bikes cuz I'm not too crazy about folding bike cuz I'm from the old generation but I do like e-bikes
Rad sells lots of different designs. This is the only folding one.
Can the expand 5 be upgraded to an LCD read out????
Yes but it will cost you another hundred bucks.
Is it good for food delivery?
Does the radexoand 5 need the key at all to turn on? Or is it only for the battery?
Both.
Turning the key from counter-clockwise to clockwise (much like in a car):
1 - Power Off, battery is unlocked from frame for installation or removal. Push the key in and turn to get to ...
2 - Power Off, but battery is locked to the frame.
3 - Power On, and battery is still locked to the frame. Then you can press the power-on button on the control pad.
The key itself can be removed in any position, and they pointedly recommend *not* leaving it in while riding. If you want to lock the bike up to pop into a store, then use position 2 and take the key with you.
When turned from 1 to 2 or 3, a little round steel post pops out of the battery and goes into a hole in the battery mounting bracket (like a deadbolt into a door frame), preventing you from sliding it up and out of the bracket.
Oddly enough, the key switch is labeled "IGNITION". 😄
Zoomo or Lectric? Which one is better?
Hi i am from Canada this model is 500 w instead of 750 w do you think it’s a big deal of difference?
Not a huge deal - should handle hills pretty well and flat ground no problem. I'd have to test myself to be sure - you could also ask on the Rad forum: radowners.com
I have a voltbike outback 500w and can reach a top speed of 38km no pedaling, with the speed limiter turned off. The difference between a 750 and 500 watt ebike is how much power it can pull out of the battery. You'll go a bit faster on a 750 watt ebike, but it also drains the battery faster. So imo 500w isn't a big deal unless you're really wanting that extra speed, which is also sadly illegal in canada.
This bike would be perfect if it has a display and suspension
I m 6’3 do you think it’s possible to ride with this ride ?
Why is the frame and fork geometry still suspension corrected without a sup fork? The head tube should be lower lower like the RRunner2
I'm not an expert on the geometry but wouldn't that cause the rider to not be as upright?
@@EbikeEscape yes (minimal) but not a full 2 inches like the travel of the sup fork. It should have the front end like the RR2 but my guess is they have a sup corrected fork on it so they can continue using the same frame mold as the mini or they will offer a sup version down the road. As of now there is no reason to have a longer rigid fork with a brace just above the tire.
What do you think is better Radmini 4 or Radmini step thru 2?
I prefer the step-thru.
Can the LCD screen be ordered from the factory already installed
No, unfortunately, it has to be purchased separately.
I own two Rads the City 3 and Mini 2, this cheap version is a disappointment. So happy I ordered my Mini 2 before this Expand was announced.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and checking out the video.
They should have called it the Radcollaspe, no front suspension, cheaper components, basically a downgraded Radmini. I do like the new bmx handlebars.
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
What is a suspension seat post?
I just purchased this bike, and I am so far very happy with it. However, RPB staff sold me their “Fremont” pannier, only for me to discover that the attachments cannot be adjusted to fit the rear rack on this bike. Staff said they had never encountered this problem before and could offer no suggestions. Has anyone ever developed a hack or found a pannier that fits this particular rear rack?
Your Profesional opinion , if you must get one out of two, remember for you , will it be Juice ripracer ,or Rad expand 5 , let me know thanks
RipRacer is far more fun but versatility with the RadExpand should definitely be considered due to its ability to fold.
What app are you using on your phone for checking the speed?
Speedometer app by Cool Niks (Android)
Google maps in bike navigation does the same for me but no idea on accuracy
Can you wheel it around while it's folded?🤔
23:30 that van totally cut you off.
Yes, good catch. I was very close to having to slow down.
What's that bell helmet you have on ?
This is the Bell Scout Air Helmet (amzn.to/3vUkL5g ) with the Air Shield (amzn.to/3Krv9Xf ) installed. (affiliate links)
you could have showed us how the handle bars adjust,, that's important for people with back problems.
Loosening up the stem plate allows them to go forward and backward. Sorry I didn't show it but when you assemble the bike you can get it dialed in.
@@EbikeEscape thank you
When folded, is it possible to roll it like the Brampton?
I don't believe so but to be honest did not try.
@@EbikeEscape I wrote to them about this and they said it's not possible.
Does the lamp in the rear fender have no function?
I'm pretty sure that the round one on the fender is just a retro-reflector (not a lamp) to light up in the headlights of following vehicles. The wide one on the rack is the illuminated LED tail light and brake light.
❤😢❤ i need parts fast cheap . or is this a throw away do i have to a whole new bike because no parts. Where is the name plate data if it gets stolen? Law requires 6 lights front back sides L/R front & back ❤😢❤
If RAD used honest 750 motors, they'd sell a lot more. They won't get my $ til then.
Another question for every bike, how is the sound? Annoying whine or a more smooth motor sound?
Did you listen around the 30:00 mark? Most of these motors sound about the same. I don't pay too much attention to the noise.
This bike or the Lectric 2.0????
radexpand 5 or heybike ranger?
This video is excellent. I decided to purchase 2. BUT, don’t try and purchase in Canada. Rad is acknowledging they have shipping problems and delays. My experience is they also have a huge disconnect in their ability to manage their inventory to a particular order. First In, First Out, appears to not be the case. A family member purchased two minutes before I did in March. They now have the identical bikes as I ordered. I don’t, and the reasons Rad provides change by the hour. The problems go much deeper than the blame they are laying on their shipper. Canceled the order. Bought local. I would rather ride than continue to be impacted by Rad’s problems.
Seems like they have fixed those issues here. Got mine in the predicted timeline
We purchased this Vivi 27.5” electric bike and a Tentaquil 26” electric bike for our 13 and 14 year olds. czcams.com/users/postUgkxUiL0GnyDjP32RJdd660sP8mZk4CRLTCJ The Vivi was much easier to put together. With the Vivi, there was a video link to assist with assembly which made the process easier to follow (we did put the handlebars on upside down, but it was a quick and easy fix). With the Tentaquil, the assembly was not as simple to follow, but after we messaged the company for an assembly video, it was easier and they did respond quickly. The other major differences were that the Vivi has a grip throttle on the right handle (like a motorcycle) and the Tentaquil has a push throttle that you use your thumb to activate. The monitors were also different, so if you’re looking for something specific in terms of changing the bikes functions, pay attention to what the monitor offers. We were really impressed with the overall quality and functionality of both bikes, but if you’re looking for more power and an easier assembly, definitely go with the Vivi!
They used a full list of cheaper parts and gave you less features for the same price... thanks rad. You know they were already making loads of money on each bike before now they are just profiting more and you get less. Half tempted to buy a used one now...
The RadMini was available after they released this but it since has sold out.
I just bought this for my wife because there was a nice discount. Hope she likes it but after watching these reviews I agree it’s pretty bare bones for features. Just hope it’s solid performance and reliable.
Purchase an LCD for $100? WTF? I bought a replacement unlocked mini LCD on aliexpress for $25. Holy gouging batman.
Bring the last year mini stepthru back! No way buying the expand 5! Disappointed.
Gotta find it used now
.....
Good luck
Whats the deal with only 5' 10" height?
There is another CZcamsr who shares videos of the RadExpand 5 and he’s 6’4” and 220 lbs. He has no issues, thought I do believe he replaced the seat stem to accommodate his height.
This New model is a joke ?! It's seems to be the old one model... Thanks to Ras Team because i will keep my old Radmini4 for a long Time ;)
23:30 😯
Yeah :/
It's a mini with a hinge and better handlebars
Very similar yes
did you cover the wt?
Yes, 62.5 lbs - thanks for watching!
It's much easier to fold if you stand on the other side of the bike.
It seems like a downgrade.
Why is it that I love this ebike bike and they keep telling me we don't supply UK this is a horrible answer they advertise their products and when u fall for the item they should not be advertising on my phone
and by the way that bell I mean really? not a horn! the cheapest crap bell 😂
Rad mini looks so much better
I was planning to buy 1, but unfortunately I cycle faster with my single speed (non electric bike) without anyone seeing me
The old rad mini looks better
That Honda wasn’t kind there, cut you right off.
Need more flashing lights sometimes.
cost cutting 😢
They make electric bikes that go 30 on throttle only continuous Don't buy garbage when you can get better for the same price
Many manufacturers limit the throttle only top speed to comply with the Federal ebike regulations and classing system. So a lower top speed doesn't mean a "garbage" product.
