  • Tenzin Woser starts the interview by talking about his life back in Tibet. He born in a place called Golok in Tibet where a tradition existed that if a family had two sons, one would become a monk while the other stayed back home because he was expected to take care of his family. In his case, his elder brother went away, and he remained at home. Unlike most children in his hometown, he received some kind of education because his mother, who had some education herself, encouraged him to read prayer books with his monk brother in a monastery.
During those days, due strict restrictions imposed by the Chinese authorities, people were not allowed to go out after 8 p.m., as the Chinese police and army patrolled the area. Woser la, his brother and his friends were responsible for going out after 8 and distributing posters which advocated for a Free Tibet. However, due to his age, being just 14 years old, and not being able to keep up with the others, he was caught. They subjected him to physical assault and electrocution. His mother suggested him to leave for India after he was released from prison.
It took him around 1 month and 5 days to reach India by foot. He mentions that the most difficult part during the travel was that they had shortage of food.
Later in life, he wanted to work at TCV because of various reasons like being an alumni and remembering that he was here when he had nothing.
He ends the interview by saying “Now that we are refugees, if I speak honestly, we are living peacefully till the time His Holiness is here. I apologise. If I think about the fact that I’m a refugee, I’ve no land to show saying that it’s mine. We’re living under the supervision of other people. We've to leave whenever they tell us to leave. I know it’s not only me but every Tibetan in exile around us. We can do nothing about the fact that we have to depend on others.”
