I lost count of the subtle and not so subtle jabs in this review, I respect the dry humour good sir.
I'm glad you appreciate a few jokes here and there. Not everyone does lol
Excellent presentation of some of the reasons why Rogues are a little cheaper to buy than the competition but are built to be throw away vehicles.
Well done, this was interesting and thorough. If I ever see 1 of these with yellow brake calipers, slammed, and cambered out, I will assume that 1 of your loyal viewers was inspired. And this slammed and cambered Rogue might also have a time bomb eBay turbo shoved onto the backside of the engine.
Dealer tech here, so I have a few says on this.
1) Thank you for a very detailed review
2) Transfer case seal oil leak is pretty common on this T33 generation, I believe it's due to improper installation. We have a bulletin for it.
3) These stake castle nuts are not fun to remove. If not being careful, you could damage the CV axle thread and will need to replace new CV axle. Nissan OEM CV axles are quite expensive. I actually prefer the cotter pin castle nut better.
4) We see less CVT problems than before (still, but less), so I believe Jatco made some improvements on their CVTs.
5) The older CVTs that use CVT fluid NS-2, have transmission dipstick. For the newer CVTs that use NS-3, there is no more transmission dipstick. There is still a tube with a "fake" dipstick so you can fill up CVT fluid from the top, but using a scanner to measure fluid temperature while draining overflowing fluid is the correct way to measure fluid level. According to Nissan, this way of measurement is more accurate than the traditional way with a dipstick. It seems to be common among manufacturers (Toyota does the same thing with their AT).
6) Nissan has been using one-piece style lower control arm for years, so either bushing cracks or ball joint gets loose, the whole control arm needs to be replaced.
6) The 3-cyl turbo engine has a plastic engine oil pan (why Nissan??)
Nissan burned me bad a 2016 Maxima and a 2015 Murano. The Murano puked all its fluid out at 900 miles. From the factory someone used what looked like plier teeth to install the line from the Jatco to the radiator. It split and the dealer made me pay 450 for just a refill. With 950 miles, they said it was rodent damage. My Maxima made it to 90k and hail (luckily) took that car out. As the CVT was on its way out. The Murano I limped 1800 miles for a vacation to California and back to Colorado. Thankfully when it starting bucking at 52k we traded for a 4Runner (new). So now we have 2 new 4Runners, and I will never buy another Nissan. 😂
This is after Having a 2004 Titan, a 2005 Frontier, a 2005 maxima, a 2006 Altima, 2007 Titan, 2011 Titan, 2011 370Z (loved it) and the 2016 Maxima, and 2015 Murano. So I was a loyal Nissan buyer.
@@JAMESWUERTELE the new generation Pathfinder comes with a 9 speed AT instead of CVT, so I guess there’s a reason for that.
Hey maybe you know if in the latest 2023 turbo only models, if the CVT is still made by Jatco? Have they made improvement. I am curious about a Rogue. If Nissan would just split from Renault, find some great engineers, and start their own. Their last CEO cheaped out it seems, and now this is all happening.
@@pnutbuttajellee1394 I do believe that the new generation Rogue's CVT is still made by Jatco. Like I said, we see less and less CVT problems than before, so I assume Jatco did some improvements on their CVTs. Time will tell if the newer gen is getting better or not.
On electrical side of this car the mess is not smaller: you can have wires which leave front side, go to back to be connected there and literally go back to front to be hooked to some modules. You may find some modules placed next to trunk which don't have any sensors and which are connected to BCM, ECM located in front. Nice engineering, Nissan !
Nissan's wiring supplier must be in bed with one of their engineers, I swear. There's miles of it in this thing!
Fantastic and honest review ! I respect that you tell the truth! Please keep them coming. If you can review a honda element if you can find one that still has the rear control arm attached, lol
I love your sarcasm.....
You sound like an expert....good to see. Thanks
We have used these models at my work for four years now. This is the first year they had a 3 cylinder turbo engine. The go kart style transmissions get you good gas mileage. I got 44 mpg driving from Atlanta to Griffin GA last night, primarily on the main highways. Good gas mileage. We fold down the rear seats. The covers pop off on the backs of the seats with our high impact use. An ordinary driver might never have the issue with the rear seat 💺 covering coming off, but overall, they are cheaply made. The stereo is fine, has android and apple CarPlay. The cars engines and drivetrains have basically changed almost every year, but the body style is the same as almost ten years ago with minor changes. If you can get a deal on a new one, I’d say they hold up to normal usage. We did have one with an engine that failed on the first day using it. It was an engine out/swap to get it fixed. Like I said if you can get one for less than a Mazda, Toyota or Honda of similar size and build you may want to take a chance. Buyer beware, they are cheap, but reasonably durable. I’ve never had a Honda engine fail. My best friend buys only Toyota, and my third friend has a Rogue. She doesn’t know anything about cars and always buys the worst cars. I’d buy any car beside the ones she picks out. Hope it helps if you’re wondering about Rogues. This has been a very honest appraisal of my experience.
Did you fill the tank before and after the trip? I do not believe you got 44 mpg in a gas crossover. My Camry hybrid likes to claim I'm getting 54 mpg on a highway trip sometimes, but it's always 43 mpg at the pump.
@@aluisiousyour computer shouldn't be that far off. My sienna is pretty spot on only ever a 1mpg difference. I'm averaging 41mpg in my sienna hybrid and wverytime I hand calculate it the vehicle is always really close.
I love your dry humor
Excellent review
Big giant cavity for hiding things when you wanna cross the border, HAHAHA
If I ever win the lottery I'm hiring you as a consultant and we will take all the issues you've ever seen and create the perfect car that has none of those design problems
So glad I scored a good deal on the latest crv hybrid
Can you do one on the 1.5T engine? It has a new transmission, plastic oil pan, and other interesting designs.
The bottom is very open on this car but in Europe it totally sealed from the road.Everything is covered with plates down under. The power steering is electric. All is four cylinder engines .
Now that Nissan is moved in some models from CVT, I hope you can talk about VQ35DD with ZF9
flex pipe is the most common area for leaks
I really like washers that follow the wiper and replacement of the hose periodically is not a big deal. I have a Subaru forester with fixed jets, aimed improperly. They cannot be adjusted and are nearly useless.
👀 did you know? in Chinese market Nissan purposely revs up idle rpm when the new 3cyl Rogue hood is open LOL? To make it feel less shaky 😂
Damn I feel a lot better owning a 1995 vehicle after watching this video
@@speedkar99what’s the best new vehicle to buy under $22k? That’s not a Honda or Toyota? Or I’m I stuck buying a Corolla or Corolla Cross.
9:40 you don’t need a special too to do transmission services just drain fill from the dipstick then get the transmission fluid hot by idling and open the level port at the bottom for a few minutes then you’re done. It can be done by yourself in under an hour.
The CVT on our 2007 Nissan Versa was still going when the subframe, brake lines & a few other things bit the dust. Nissan won't be seeing me again in this lifetime.
"That kid in high school that had no objectives in live" - I feel personally attacked here!
Love the video. You are hilarious. I love the way that you evaluate cars!!
Nice video! It seems like the only real design issue is with the potential carbon buildup on the intake valves, the rest seems serviceable.
Did you find your toothbrush in the engine compartment? ;-)
Should really add the model year in the title because each generation is different
Lol, do you really need to be spoonfed? Does exterior not give enough clues?
@@maxdm1583 I'll spell it out for you.
He does a mechanical review on a car. Each generation has great differences. The video is only reviewing one generation, (the current one) and not all of them. Therefore the title should be more specific.
Most people who reviews cars put the year or generation. And those channels dont even dig that deep into mechanics.
Its like making a video called "Nintendo Console Review"
Yeah... which one? Theres a lot
T33 with a PR25DD. The best rendition of the t33. They're truly bulletproof. Nissan put some effort into this one actually.
@@speedkar99 I've seen them with 100k miles no issues already. Biggest issue we had with the was some programming errors and the t case seals not being installed correctly
Didn't the variable compression design come out on a Infiniti originally about 5 years ago and still used on those cars? Is that not enough time to test the design?
I like the sarcasm is this video. 😂
Hi I think CVT oil can be filled from a dipstick pipe on the top it's more convenient.
Can you please do the Nissan-renoult 2.0dci
What car manufacturer do you rate highly?
I knew these rogues would be junk . Nice job on the hilarity us commentary man !
It looks a bit better than the last generation. With the change in leadership, distance from Renault & large acquisition/stake in Mitsubishi Automotive things could get better. The Variable Compression I4 was really well tested for Infiniti but this I3 may have been shortcut? I guess we'll find out in 2033
I was just commenting about the renault thing...I have only been researching Nissan a little, but yes it does seem they just need to split from them. Stick with Mitsubishi only...same country, culture, values, etc. Anyway, do you know anything about their latest CVT? Is it still Jatco? What sources can you share about what you know so far?
@ 17:35 The Starter:
"OH NO, DO I HAVE TO???"
Try and get ahold of one of the new gen Nissan frontiers
Any recommendations for a basic, easy-to-maintain and simple family car? Greetings from Finland!
I take it that this review also applies to the new Mitsubishi Outlander?
It seems to me that the French engineering is strong with this one, thus the cost cutting on the parts for easy failure.
There is no cost cutting. What in the world are you on about. Whatever Honda/Toyota/VW you're driving will have smaller axles, more plastic parts and won't have Nissan's use of aluminium on control arms or independent rear suspension.
Who added an oil catch can. I need to see your setup
🤣 😂 yooo the sarcasm 🔥
“Now I can remove the air filter” and it’s full of leaves and junk 😂😂😂
Old Honda ridgelines are prone to strawberry milkshakes due to having the transmission fluid cooled in the radiator I believe. I wonder if this setup is more reliable, less, or the same?
That’s brutal that there’s that much rust on the subframe at 2 years old! Seems like a five year throwaway vehicle.
Depends on the Radiator.
Many cars cool the transmission fluid trough the radiator and most never have problems there.
Yes some coolers can fail....this type is less prone since the transmission fluid doesn't go through the radiator.
I drove one of these as a rent a car a few months ago through the north east. I thought it was pretty clunky and terrible driving it on the highway.. when you put it in sports mode its a lot more smoother. Driving in NYC I rethought how I hated the tech and the start/stop shit. It became REALLY useful especially since driving in NYC is really terrible these days. I recently drove a murano on the west coast and actually missed the rogue. All the cool tech and features of the rogue made me miss it and I thought how basic the murano was. Anyway it seems theyre all pretty cheap these days. I wouldnt buy a car from 2018-2025.
What is it about the jatco design that causes so much failure? Hondas been using CVTs since the 2013 accord and you never hear about their cvt blowing up.
Overheating. Insufficient design. I have another video on CVT failure...check it out.
@@speedkar99 so cost cutting, like with every nissan product since renault took over.
Issue is people beat on them like they stole the car. Nissan cvts can do 400,000 kms when taken care of and you keep changing the fluid. I have seen original jatco cvts go 400,000 kms or more.
@@kevinW826 that doesnt suprise me since nissan now occupies the market segment pontiac once had and the altima is the new pontiac grand am lol
@@kevinW826 My 79yo friend has a Nissan with Jatco CVT. He drives infuriatingly slow and easy. The first Jatco died at 15,000k, and the replacement lasted to 45,000k. Pretty good for a transmission you say will last 400,000. Maybe his 3rd one will go till end of warranty?
My nearest Nissan dealer is a one and a half hour drive from me. So I'd never get a new one.
knew this one was gonna be filled with jokes 🤣
Just the kind of car that blocks all traffic every Sunday morning when the elderly ladies drive to church. Fortunately, I'm never up that early on Sunday mornings. And if I was, I wouldn't have been allowed to drive for many hours yet, so I don't have any problems with them.
I own a 2006 Nissan X-Trail which, so far, has been a reliable and low maintenance cost car. I wouldn't even consider a modern Nissan, especially one with a Jatco CVT!
God I love my '04 Corolla.
Any improvements on the newer jatco Cvt's ?
@@hjer731 yeah I have seen people never get the oil changed or service their cars on time and they complain about reliability on the internet.
Yes they have some improvements for this model year, but that doesn't always mean it'll last longer...time has to tell
@@speedkar99I use to live in Brampton/Milton. I worked with a guy who had two Nissan Altimas and bothe cvts made it to 400,000 kms. The first was totalled in an car crash, the second he traded it in for a murano. He had 100,000 kms on it when I left the company. If taken care of Nissan cvts will last. My sister in law use to have a 2009 Nissan versa with the cvt. It’s still on the road as they sold it to a friend of theirs and they are taking care of it.
My wife and I are looking at a Nissan kicks for her since she only does city driving. I have no concerns with their cars.
1.5L Rogues have the CVT-X. Chain driven, torque converter much larger. Should see less issues.
Trash vehicle, great video! Fully appreciate how thorough this review was. And please keep the Nissan slander coming.
One of your videos made into donut channel video, congrats
I bought a 2017 Rogue in 2019. Worked fine for 6-8 months. I did the drain and fill on the CVT at 30,000 which was a mild pain in the ass with no dip stick but not horrible. Then spent an exorbitant amount of time at the dealership over the next 6 months getting warranty work on the front end because of a metallic clunk. They essentially rebuilt the front end and it still made noise ohh and I had to do a door lock actuator but because it’s Nissan you can’t just buy the actual actuator and pop it in like a normal car you’ve got to get a whole assembly which was stupidly expensive so warrantied it for that. I decided to sell it to the dealership for a profit during COVID value surge since I didn’t need a second car with us being WFH and having a motorcycle to use if my wife needed the truck. Was never happier to see a vehicle leave my life. Did not want to own that thing without a warranty. Didn’t recall it being horrible to work on.
If it can get 250k miles without much issue like my 2011 Nissan Versa with a 4-speed automatic without burning oil, that would be a miracle
@@speedkar99in 2011 no unless you got the SL I'm hatchback configuration. All other models have the 5 or 6spd manual or the 4 spd automatic. I had a 2008 versa hatchback with cvt for abkit 210k miles and it never burned oil and 0 cvt issues on that car even though I drove it like a maniac.
Crazy how much rust on the bottom for a 2 year car!

Hello speed
aren't subframes always steel?
Thank you for enlightening your viewers once again ✨
Would love to see a ford edge review as well
In what part of the universe are they putting 2.5 straight 4 on these?! In US market these are only 3 cyl 1.5 turbos - horrible junk
This gen launched with the 2.5 as he did say this was a 2 year old car.
Yeah the 2021 model had 2.5.
Base model Canadian markets still have the 2.5
At least Nissan pickup trucks are still made reliably.
No turbo charger to fail and no head gaskets to fail, and no contamination of the oil with gasoline like the Honda CRVs with 1.5T.
Also they don't catch fire like the Hyundai/Kias.
I had a 1.5 civic. No issues until 200k miles, cvt was fine but head gasket started to ooze
Had a 2016 1.5t civic. Transmission went at 45k and the head gasket went at 83k and the dealership screwed me out of my warranty coverage… can’t trust new Hondas, actually it’s known that the 1.5t L15 is bad
Speaking of waiting for a wife, a guy I knew had a can of tutrtle wax that he kept in his car so when his wife was shopping he would get out and wax his car. The punch line is that the car would be in various stages of waxing as he drove it.
I suspected this car would be a nightmare to work on especially the water pump.
That's the old engine, the new is the 3 cly turbo way more efficient
Seems like Nissan just cheaper out on this model to the point where they can’t even include an actual dipstick
I totaled my 2019 sentra :(
The car market is so fucked especially in the west coast. I think the east is slighlty better
One mile after the warranty done😅😅😂
Nissan is the Stellantis/Chrysler of Japan. You're not a TRUE Nissan Rogue/Altima driver unless you're paying 29%APR.
man, I wonder how you would talk about a engine from the american south. it seems all these canadian cars just rust out in 10 years.
More complicated the e-power version 🗿🗿🗿
One million thousand PSI. That some serious pressure. Throw in some coal & maybe make a diamond or two. 😆
Wow, 1 Million Thousand Hundred PSI !!!!!!. I suppose you measure it with a Millimeter hey ????
so they replaced the only good engine they had with a 3 cylinder junkola.
This is not a Nissan rogue 2023 this Nissan is the 2021

Flapers fails
Engine more hot and maybe Drink milkshake🤣
🤦♂️
I take it a 2023 Honda civic 1.5T is much more reliable than this? Same with the Honda crv?
The 1.5T has problems with head gaskets. If you’re buying a Civic get the 2.0L (or the upcoming 2.0L hybrid). For the CRV, the same 2.0L hybrid system is your friend.
@@tails300 too late, but I'm definitely assuming the civic even with the 1.5t will long outlive the Nissan rogue
In Europe it is called X-trail but comes with 1.6 petrol engine or 1.5 l diesel and a manual gearbox or a CVT automatic . Its smaller brother is called Qashqai with. 1.2 petrol,1.6 or 1.5 diesel with a manual gearbox or CVT.I own a Qashqai 1.5 diesel and is a nice car and is a top seller in Europe .
I cannot believe how poorly this car is made and it is not cheap to buy, Nissan in my opinion the worst Japanese car manufacturer , great review
It's too bad because they used to be just the opposite. (like back when they were called Datsun)
It's average for the industry. Remember there's Ford's and GM's out there too

Nissan rogue and Mitsubishi outlander, both leave the factory with the intention to be sold to customers with poor credit history.
This guy is too real lol
dwl... 70% doom and gloom on this one
So sad to see manufactures doing eveyting they can to make these cars fail so fast. Apple has been the cancer in our society with these evil plans
The new car buyers don't value this as much because they're blindsided by warranty
Nissan was the best Japanese car prior to 2000 after the Nissan/Renault/ Mitsubishi alliance they are below Hyundai. I hope carlos ghosn gets life in prison.
In terms of quality maybe. Most new car buyers don't consider reliability near the top of their list.
Garbage car, garbage quality, build to last untill the warranty expires. I don't understand why the exhaust have more soot than my 17 year old car
Nissan quality looks so horrible, 2 years old and its already rusting and leaking oil. A 15 year old Honda is better than a brand new Nissan !
I appreciate the honest reviews that you do. They are very good.
