  • Watch the three-part Britain's Treasure Islands documentary series on BBC FOUR, starting Tue 12 Apr 2016 21:00. (repeated Wed 13 Apr 2016 20:00).
This mini-documentary explores the wildlife, culture and history of the remote island of Saint Helena, a UK Overseas Territory in the Atlantic. We discover Longwood House, where Napoleon Bonaparte was imprisoned for the last six years of his life after the Battle of Waterloo. And we find Saint Helena's unique wirebird and follow its confirmation. Saint Helena is home to many unique plants and arguably the island's greatest treasure; its unique arthropods (more than 400 of which occur on Saint Helena and no where else on Earth).
This film is one of forty mini-documentaries made from the footage not used in the broadcast series.

I always wonder, if they only remove the cats, doesn't that increase the problems of rats and mice? At least the cats hunt them (mice especially) aswell as the birds...

I struggle to understand keeping cats - any cats - on an isolated island with ground nesting birds. Domestic cats never did and do not belong there.

I agree with funtorture. The cats, rats and mice would probably have been introduced quite early on by the ships coming to the island. All the ships used to have cats on them to control the rodent infestation that naturally occured with all the stored food items. And I guess with spaying and neutering not yet being a thing, they would have an overpopulation of cats every few months, happy to drop some off at the next island. It probably was either that or just kill off the excess...

It's so un-dominating accent this British accent. The world should accept the strong and beautiful North American accent.
