    I'm in Cleveland, Missouri, taking a look at the custom cabinet shop we went to for our new construction build in Kansas City, and you'll never believe how much money Red Beard Carpentry makes from their cabinet designs!
    He started this business on his own, & thanks to hard work and dedication, he's grown it to a comfortable size and is definitely reaping the rewards. If you're looking for inspiration to start your own business, or finance, business, and tax hacks such as bonus depreciation and cost segregation, or even just curious as to the process that goes into cabinet making, this video is for you.
    We hope you enjoy and learn something, thanks for watching!

      The place I worked at did the whole thing, we did everything except make the hardware. I looked at cabinets at Home Depot and they attach the corners with plastic angle brackets and staples, very weak looking but fine after it's all attached and has a countertop, I think IKEA is on par with most cabinet shops quality they're pretty nice, I like the steel drawer sides more space and more sturdy.

    I'm a professional custom cabinet maker. Ive learned a few things along the way.
    1. My cabinets are frameless. Customers 95% of the time prefer frameless cabinets and dont care for half overlay or quarter overlay doors. They all prefer full overlay.
    2. The only time I add a face frame to my cabinets is if the customer wants a beaded face frame with inset doors and drawer fronts
    3. Melamine is NOT a bad material. I dont know how this lie got started, but melamine is actually very strong and durable and recommended for cabinet boxes. It's actually more water resistant than plywood. Thats not to say plywood is a bad product. I actually use both depnding on what the customer wants.
    4. I use end panel and fillers that are flush with doors and drawer fronts, and I don't use quarter round molding to cover up gaps between the cabinet and the walls I scribe all my panels and fillers to the wall and floor. This extra step gives my cabinets that true custom feel.
    Theres more than one way to make cabinets, but ive learned that as long as you don't cut corners youll always stay in business

    Nice shop, well equipped from what i saw.
    But there were things we didnt see as well.
    Like where he cuts the plywood, edgebanding, etc. etc. plus where the finishing is done.
    However, he obviously has all that.
    Now just think about the size of this shop as compared to most shops seen on youtube.
    The difference is that some shops build, and some do shop tours.
    Space is a requirement, especially when building things like kitchen cabinets.

    Funny how all these people who claim to be cabinet builders and commenting on the price without knowing the footage of cabinets going into the house. I can tell you that about half of the price is material costs, then you have employee costs, overhead, taxes and so on. It is not an easy business to get going. You can not make it using your everyday hobby wood working tools, and a two car garage. You need space and very expensive equipment.

    You're probably right but I've never seen a one where the mortise groove is cut all the way through

    • @two-sense
      @two-sense Před rokem

      It's because the mortise groove is also the groove for the panel, cut at the same time. Simple, cheap, fast, effective system. I've made literally thousands of these doors, which we call "Shaker" style around here.

    • @Ufollowme2
      @Ufollowme2 Před rokem +2

      That's because it's not mortise and tenon. It's tongue and groove

    • @janbernad4729
      @janbernad4729 Před 5 měsíci

      As the gentlemen before me have stated, the groove you see is the continuation of the groove which holds the panel, but there probably is an actual tenon located near the inner edge of the shorter piece, which ends some distance (for example 15 milimetres) from the outer odge of the shorter piece

  • @ezyfnef
    @ezyfnef Před rokem +6

    The joint he called a mortise and tenon is actually a tongue and groove joint.

    • @adamdodski3627

      One joint with many names. Mortise and tenon. Tongue and groove. Cope and stick.

    • @two-sense
      @two-sense Před rokem

      Tongue and groove joints run parallel with the grain, ie along the length of several boards glued together. This is a mortise and tenon, although without the traditional "shoulders" on the tenon. The mortise is a continuation of the panel groove, and is cut at the same time, and the tenon is the full width of the rail. It's a modernization of the older style of mortise and tenon, but it is still a mortise and tenon.

    Actually, i didnt see much equipment, especially considering the size of the shop.
    Not saying it isnt there, but i didnt see it.
    For example, that one saw certainly isnt used for cutting all the plywood for the cabinets.
    There as a rule would be a large saw for doing that which would be very noticeable.
    I also dont understand why the applied moulding on the doors?
    Why not just use a shaper with the proper cutter to make them any style and shape you want?
    But i didnt see any shapers either.
    The vertical belt sander is a very nice one, but that can only do certain things.
    There are several other types of sanders equally as important for building cabinets, and i didnt see any.
    How does he drill the holes for the shelves?
    Again, most large shops have a machine for that, didnt see that either.
    How does he make his drawers? that also requires machinery.
    Obviously he has a large dust collector, or at least the ductwork for one.

    • @brucemiller1696
      @brucemiller1696 Před 9 měsíci

      Probably has a slider saw. Saw a blum machine that changes out to 9 hole drill. His operation is nice for having a few employees. I have 2,000 sq ft with slider, 12' edgebander, sawstop, 53" double head sander, blum delux machine, 125 gallon compressor, clamp table and big router table. Doing more euro style these days, not much custom cabinetry/furniture. 58 yrs old and lookin to get out and start making cue sticks. Still working on setups etc. Have a bid coming up for 6,000 to 40,000 cabinets. If all goes well, i get bigger shop and equipment and retire in 6 years when job is done. 🤞
