Highly Challenging IFR DME Arc Approach | VOR 15 KMTN

- Thanks to Chris for the challenge. The VOR 15 approach into KMTN is a DME arc approach with a curved final approach course. This NOT your average approach. Usually approaches have straight final legs but this is completely different. The challenge was to use only VOR radials and GPS in lieu of DME without loading the approach into the simulator GPS.
I'm a real pilot, flight instructor and former airline pilot with thousands of hours of experience.... But I've never flown an approach like this!

My IFR instructor threw this at me while we were in the sim one day. What an approach - lots going on but a good challenge. Good times!
A great example of the value of a hardware simulator. Turning knobs with your hands is way better than the mouse. When this busy, little distractions and annoyances quickly compound putting the pilot behind the airplane. Nice job!
Oh this is hilarious. Everyone brings this approach up as an interesting challenge, and Martin State was my home airport when I completed my instrument rating. Though it was listed with a different name back then, if I recall, I actually learned how to fly a DME arc using this exact approach in real life back in 2009. It's a wonderful way to learn in the sim, but it's even more gratifying to do this in the real world, and then to see the runway appear in front of you after all the turning and adjusting while descending along the approach. I think the reason so many across the country are aware of this approach for training purposes is because AOPA headquarters is fairly close up in Frederick, and their publications, training modules, and workshops sometimes reference it, as with the VOR 34 into Carroll County Airport.
Also, you have a Honeycomb Bravo, so you should be able to turn the course knob (for VOR 1 or an HSI) with the hard knob on its MCP, and you can also dial in the heading bug there, too. I also have that, and two hardware radio panels, so that I don't have to use the mouse as much, but using your Honeycomb MPC above the throttle will help you in future flights for sure.

Really enjoyed this. I would reccomend binding the knob on the honeycomb bravo to the heading bug to make life a bit easer by not having to rotate all 3 indicators with the mouse. I also recommend using the scrollwhell instead of clicking when you are using the mouse.
Thanks! So it is bound to it but it’s excruciatingly slow at rotating the heading bug. Any ideas?
@@LewDix90 This video inspired me to give some dme arcs and vor holdings a go and also found the same. I think it is best to use the scroll wheel and maybe occasionally use the bravo knob to adjust slightly as it seems to input 1 degree per notch on the knob. I dont think there is a solution without external software unfortunately
@LewDix90 check you increment values. It could be low.

Just bind keyboard keys then, I use the page up/down - Home/end for my autopilot controls, much better than clicking around with the mouse!

Im doing my instrument training now and tried this approach. Its takes alot of focus but it is rewarding when u see the runway whne break out after all that work.
I felt rewarded when I saw the runway on the sim. I can imagine in the real world it's 10 times as good a feeling!
When you said that Arc doesn't take you to the final approach...it is the final approach...that really got my attention...WOW! I never really looked at them closely until now and have to say I'm impressed...that really shows some piloting skills for sure. I know this is beyond the comment section but I can't imagine flying anything like that in IFR conditions in the real world...to me it's a disaster waiting to happen...hard to believe anything good could result in that but it is there so I guess it does work. Thank you so much! It's certainly a daunting approach but I don't think it's as bad as it looks to do it in the real world. I'd certainly love to give it a try! This is the beauty of a simulator. You can practice practice and practice before doing the real thing to make it easier. Thank you for the kind words!
Use the rotary knob also check your increment values in clock wise and anticlockwise rotation.
Awesome video! What a crazy approach that is 😅 I will definitely try that in my sim! one thing I noticed and I might be wrong. You put in a direct to the VOR to monitor the distance. You said it is now giving you the DME distance. Isn't it showing you the GPS distance with the direct to and not the dme (slant) distance? Of course it makes almost no difference in this case. Let me know if I'm wrong here and thank you for that amazing video! 😍

Very Cool. Any reason why you were not using the 530 VOR info (Radial/DME) vs the OBS2?
That would be too easy 😏 The challenge was to just use radials and DME. I wanted to make my life difficult.
@@LewDix90 Wasn't talking about loading the approach as that would be too easy. But to use the fact that the 530 identifies the VOR for you and gives you radial and DME information.
