  • 14 critics' reactions to David Tennant in the West End revival of CP Taylor's Good, summed up by Paul Seven Lewis.
What did the reviews say about David Tennant's portrayal of an ordinary man in 1930s Germany? How did they rate Sharon Small and Elliot Levey who support the Doctor Who star? And what did they think about the play, Dominic Cooke’s direction and Vicki Mortimer’s set?
Good with David Tennant is performing at the Harold Pinter Theatre until 24 December 2022. A recording will be screened in UK cinemas on 20 April and internationally 15 June 2023.
Production photos used in his review of the reviews are by Johan Persson.

It gets a 5 star review from me. I was very impressed by it, and not only Tennants performance. All acting was phenomenal and the switching between the characters worked for me... I will be going back a second time!

I think it’s going to be one of those shows where the audience love it more than the critics. Of course, it’s great to have all those 4 star reviews but disappointing not to have more 5 star ones, especially when it’s clearly such a good production.

I would love to go back a second time. Alas a bit too far for me to travel. But I also loved it and agree. The performances were exceptional. It was really gripping.

I was very impressed by the Play. I liked the concept of only theee actors. You have to listen whats going on and it is messy. But these times were messed up and grey, so the production did a great job in portraing Germany at this time. I was really shocked about some scenes, at the End, I nearly started to cry cause it reminded me the hard way, that this was my countrys history. I am very thankful that I got the chance to see it and reminds me, to never let this things happen again. Besides, all three actors did a splendid Job for me.

I thought it quite harrowing, and I was standing at the back, the staging was kind to those in the cheap seats (£20). I think it will always be an important play abd I thought it well done with just the three actors, very dream like (although yes a bit hard to keep up if you don't know the play!). The comment about a £155 ticket has tickled me, you don't have to sit in the best seat for this one in my opinion!

I've just seen this in the cinema and I think it probably worked better on screen than on stage became the editing made it easier to follow the twist, switchings and asides

That’s very interesting. Although you lose the excitement of being there, you’re right that you do often gain a better view. And it’s a lot less expensive!

I’ve been holding onto my ticket since 2020. As to whether it was worth it, I’ll know in two weeks time. However, with David Tennant at the helm, I have no doubt. There’s no role this man cannot excel at.
The comment about the play not being enjoyable made me laugh. Given the topic, I’d be much more worried if the critics called it enjoyable :)

He’s getting better and better as an actor. The play clearly suits his talent for being able to convey complex characters.

@@TheatreReviewsWithPaulSeven I saw him in Hamlet (unfortunately not live) even before I started watching Doctor Who. He was the first Hamlet I actually liked because he was the first actor who didn´t play him like a mopey emo character but rather someone too clever for his own good whose intellect caused him pain. Not being a big fan of the play itself, I finally found a connection with Hamlet´s character.
But I agree 100%. He keeps getting better and better. He´s developed quite a range over the years - from goofs all the way to creepy characters full of underlying threat. It´s always a privilege to watch him.

Have you been to see it yet? I went last week and thought it was excellent. It was different to what I was expecting but I found it very gripping. And I agree that David Tennant is an excellent actor portraying so many different characters with such depth and intelligence. I find the theme kind of interesting because even his Doctor as Doctor Who had a bit of a complex around whether he was actually good and of course that was explored even more with Matt Smith's Doctor. The Doctor seems to be good yet certainly had dark undercurrents and that was definitely reflected in his portrayal of John Halder too. I hope you enjoy it. By the way he signs autographs at the stage door if you go and is very friendly and courteous.

@@franparkinson2040 I actually saw it last night :)
I was not the biggest fan of the way the story was told because it took me a while to orientate myself. However, I really liked all three actors, they did a brilliant job. The ending was chilling, it really landed the punch, and you could have heard a pin drop in the building.
I know DT does stage door signings during this run but it was raining very heavily and I am not that big on autographs or selfies so I skipped it, both for my sake and his. He is a very friendly and genuine person though, I agree. I always say that if I could pick a celebrity for a friend, my first choice would be either Emma Thompson or David Tennant :)

I've seen him in Much Ado About Nothing (on YT) and Don Juan in Soho (live) and he was amazing in both. Please correct me if i'm wrong, but i thought that all of the plays that he starts in usually get top reviews?

Stuck in NYC, so I haven't seen it. I did see Alan Howard on Broadway in Howard Davies' production, and my jaw often dropped. That show had a cast of 10, and doing it with a cast of three is hard for me to imagine . . . five actors, OK, but three? I had always suspected that David Tennant could do ANYTHING, and his Hamlet, Benedick and Richard II sealed the deal. But--does Dominick Cooke use the musica hall underscoring? Does Hitler still begin as a burlesque? Those were the production elements that distracted me as I was seduced by Mr. Howard. I hope to see the new production in a cinema here in NYC if I can figure out the performance schedule.

The play moved my Head but not my Heart. I give it 3.5 stars our of 5. The two supporting actors played too many parts. I wanted to see an older woman play John Halder's mother suffering from dementia, but I was subjected to an actress in her early 40's play the role.
