Growing up in the 70s, you couldn't get away from radio hits like 10cc's 'I'm Not in Love' or Doobie Bros' 'Black Water.' I grew to hate them because of the overplaying. Listening to them recently, they floored me with how good they were.

I disagree about Back to Black. I think it was more "fashionable" than overrated. Amy W. had her own "retro" groove that was not built for large arenas. My respect for this album grew when I listened more closely to the arrangements, and they're fantastic. And her vocals are superb.

A Prog Rock connection to Thriller is that Jon Anderson of Yes said in an interview that Quincy Jones told him that he and Michael Jackson got the riff on Billie Jean from a track on the The Friends Of Mr. Cairo, an album Jon made with Vangelis.

Great show and observations ! Evaluating albums from another era reminds me of a comment made by Miles Davis when a journalist told him he had been listening to an album of his from 1948. He said that he thought Miles had improved greatly since then. "When did you first hear it ?" Miles asked. "About a year ago" said the journalist. There’s a reason certain albums sell well. It’s because they’re good albums. Obviously other cultural influences play into this, but to sit here and call albums like nevermind, sgt. peppers, dark side of the moon overrated is a pointless conversation. For example, I agree wish you were here is ever so slightly better than dark side (although it’s close), but I acknowledge there are reasons for its greater success over wish you were here. In the case of Michael Jackson’s thriller, the only way it could not be considered “overrated”, in any way let alone the most overrated of all time, is if it were the best album of all time. And that, IS AN INCREDIBLY SUBJECTIVE TOPIC. What one considers to be the best of anything is bound to have controversy. Therefore, it is an impossibility for thriller not to be considered overrated by someone because of the threshold it is placed in. And because of the negative connotation that is associated with calling an album overrated, the only thing coming out of a conversation like this is turning people away from great music, like all of the previously mentioned albums. Success and quality should not be this heavily aligned!

Honestly a good point. Just because something's overrated doesn't make it automatically terrible, it could just be decent but with an unjustified amount of hype and reputation to it. I do like some of the bigger singles off of Thriller, especially the title track, but I can see why the album on the whole doesn't quite match the sales figures. (And in my opinion his best song was Smooth Criminal, anyway, that's a hill I'm prepared to die on.)
As for albums I'm a bit more specifically versed in, I might have to be a bit controversial and say The Wall, at least among prog albums. I don't think it's bad, by any means, and there's a lot I really like and appreciate about the themes and some specific standout tracks. I just have a bit of a hard time wanting to go back to listen to it as a whole because I find the plot, while good in concept, a bit scattershot in execution, a bunch of songs are a bit boring to me even when they're necessary for the story to work, and that inflates the run time a bit past what I'd be willing to put up with. That, and the bitter irony of an album about the dangers of self-isolation only driving Roger Waters further from the people around him. It's still a really good album, but coming after a string of truly great albums it's a bit underwhelming for its reputation. There's still the makings of a great album in there, it's just not quite finished. (As unpopular an opinion as it is I find myself going back to the Gilmour-led albums more than The Wall, maybe I'm just weird but there's some good tracks buried on those.) That said, you can't argue with Comfortably Numb. But hey, I've seen plenty of people be harsher than me about The Wall, so, if enough people call something overrated, does it cease to be overrated in some sense? Worth pondering, I suppose.

Maybe it's just me but I heavily dislike the term "overrated" and find it overused. Strikes me as conceited since it's about thinking that you know whether or not something deserves the acclaim it gets and I think that saying "this isn't for me and I can take solace in the fact that it's for someone else" is a far more mature way of going about things.

      @user-qb1sm3rk9r Před 3 měsíci +1

I find the "overrated *band*" lists pointless and frustrating because most people have only a cursory and incomplete knowledge of a bands catalog. I've seen reaction videos of middle aged guys in AC/ DC t shirts doing first time reactions to Black Sabbath or Queen. Some bands are known for only a few songs, and those will likely be accessible ones that get played on the radio. There's so many bands whose best songs are hidden away on their albums that rarely get airplay. If all people knew of The Beatles was She Loves You and Day Tripper then most people would think them highly overrated.
Overrated *albums* lists are a bit better because there's a higher chance that people have actually listened to it all the way through and formed an opinion.

Thriller is kind of like the Mona Lisa of pop music. If you go to the Louvre, people are crowding to see and photograph the Mona Lisa. No other painting attracts anything like as much attention. This is not because it's the best painting of all time but because it is the most famous painting of all time. Its status as the most well-known has perpetuated its popularity. Speaking of burnout, I get why people are tired of albums like Dark Side, but I still think Rumors is exceptional. It rocketed its way to stardom because its overall appeal to the masses. One thing to keep in mind: there’s a difference between being overplayed and overrated. I remember when I first actually went out and bought a copy of Led Zeppelin 4 back in the 80’s, as I sat there listening, I found myself wishing I could actually experience this music for the first time. Every song was absolutely brilliant, but the were ALL perennial staples of the mainstream Rock radio of the day, to the point where I’d already grown up hearing everyone of these songs my whole life, I was intimately familiar with every note, I didn’t need to actually buy the album, it was already pretty much engrained my DNA.

I'd pick Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart as the most overrated album ever. It's an intentionally wacky experiment to make an album as painful to listen as possible. It's just musically terrible. I don't believe anyone actually likes it, people who say they like it are just admiring it for it's novelty value.
-Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys. It has two or three great songs, but to me most of it is just okay.
-Dark Side Of The Moon. It's mostly an album of inoffensive and accessible soft rock at heart, but because it's dressed up with "meaningful" lyrics and cool sound effects it's considered a work of art. And don't tell me I need to be high to appreciate it best, that's like saying you have a girlfriend who's prettiest when you're drunk.
Led Zeppelin 1- okay it was very influential but over the years I've become aware of just how much of it is unoriginal. Some songs like Dazed and Confused, Babe I'm Gonna Leave You and How Many More Times , Communication Breakdown are reworkings of other peoples songs. Black Mountain Side is a complete ripoff of a Bert Jansch song. And with a couple of admitted covers like You Shook Me and I Can't Quit You Baby, that doesn't leave much original songwriting left.
-Beatles "White Album" - I know they were experimenting but there's just too many silly throwaway songs.
-Queen Greatest Hits albums. A lot of "fans" these days merely own the Greatest Hits albums and enjoy watching Freddie the Showman onstage. 1970s Queen albums are full of obscure gems that a lot of fans seem to have never heard. Like Black Sabbath, Rush, Yes and Genesis, it's the 1970s work that has them at their best.
Paranoid by Black Sabbath. I *do* think this is a great album, the trouble is it totally overshadows the other Black Sabbath albums. The first six Sabbath albums are great. They were actually getting into prog metal territory with Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage. It's like people only heaping praise on Revolver by The Beatles while ignoring the other albums.

I agree about Trout Mask Replica, it's one of those albums I've tried to "get" for decades, and just can't. I also agree about Led Zeppelin's debut, it's practically a cover album (Led Zeppelin II is half covers as well). I'd also throw in Nevermind the Bullocks by The Sex Pistols. It has 4 great tracks on it and the rest I never need to hear again.
However, those are offset by your takes on Pet Sounds and Dark Side, which are insane to me.

As popularity grows and diminishes, things become more or less over-rated... for its time, Thriller was a phenomenon.
It was still an era where "everyone" essentially still watched the same shows, listened the same music - our pop culture references were universal. And nothing was bigger than Jackson back then. But I definitely agree he's over rated, especially w/ the benefit of hindsight

Fully agree....I've never understood Beach Boys "Pet Sounds"... pop pablum at best....just nothing there...
But MY vote for most OVERRATED ALBUM...and I will stand my ground on this forever....THE WHITE ALBUM......Maybe 3 songs are even mildly OK....it's almost like the Beatles spit on their fans as they laughed thinking those idiots will buy any turd we put out while pretending it's high art...it ain't art...it's a money grab...
Be honest....let's say you're having a party, everybody's hammered and somebody puts The Whit Album on....
You'll be attacked with WHO PUT THAT S#!÷ ON!!.
I tried making peace with this album, buying 3 or 4 copies, listening ( begrudgingly)...it just never took..

The Eagles biggest song 'Hotel California' is a rip off of Jethro Tull's 'We Used To Know'.....totally plagiarised.
I suppose an album being 'overrated' doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad album.....and I think this is the case with Thriller. It's still a great album but not the best ever as it's sales might suggest.

For me, the most overrated album is the Eagles’ Hotel California. While by no means a horrible album, it is very uneven. Songs like “Wasted Time” are just that. Again, it’s not horrible, but certainly not deserving of the accolades it has received over the years.

I agree with ‘Thriller’. Beyond the hits, it really lacks, in my opinion. The remaining two tracks just don’t do it for me. As a record, I find ‘Bad’ a LOT better, as well as ‘Off the Wall’.
That said, I really love the title track and “Beat It”. However, they don’t touch “Dirty Diana” and “Smooth Criminal” on the follow-up.
