    Sorry, but I have to correct a mistake in your commentary. These bronze 1973 coins are still in circulation. Just because a coin says "new" penny or pence instead of "one penny" or two pence makes no difference to its status as legal tender.
    The Royal Mint is still in the process of replacing bronze coins with copper plated steel coins. This is to recover valuable non ferrous metals whose scrap value exceeds the face value of the coins.
    The large ten, twenty and fifty pence coins were replaced for the same reason - to reduce the scrap value of coins in circulation. This will reduce the incentive for people to collect coins in bulk to melt down illegally and sell the metals.
