    Totally agree with your love of ballpoint pens. As a beginner I tried all sorts of pens, pencils, etc. and have arrived at my perfect, all-around drawing tool: the ballpoint pen -- for exactly the reasons you put forth. And once I began adding watercolor washes to my sketches, often growing frustrated with inks that smeared, what perfect tool emerged once again: the lowly and magnificent BIC ballpoint pen. The ink is waterproof, doesn't smear and holds its line. Thanks, Alphonso, great information as always.

    First of all thanks very much for this post. I have a suggestion if you don't mind. Would it be a good idea ( I got this from the comment of Jack Jenkins) to draw something with the ball point and add water color to it? It would be interesting to see you tackle it. Hope I am not abusing your generosity. Again thanks a million for all the wonderful posts.

    I agree with you that a ballpoint pen is an incredibly versatile drawing instrument, but I ve only mastered using hatching and cross hatching techniques to shade with a ballpoint pen. For some strange reason, no matter how much I try, I cannot use gradient shading with a ballpoint pen.

    Probably best to use extrafine (0.5mm) point rather than say the bold (1mm) point ballpoint I use to write with. Richard Johnson does amazing field drawings with blue ink

  • @neurocipher4474
    @neurocipher4474 Před 6 lety +1

    Have you ever noticed that with ballpoint pens the ink starts to build up on the tip and eventually comes off in this huge glob?
    Other than wiping it off every now and again, is there anything you can do to prevent this? Does paper choice matter? (ex: plate bristol)

    • @pinkponyofprey1965
      @pinkponyofprey1965 Před 6 lety

      Oh, man, I hate that more than cilantro!!! :D
      Only thing I can say is some pens are worse than others so I just give up on pens, brands, models and/or types that do that and find another one.

    • @alphonsodunn
      @alphonsodunn  Před 6 lety +3

      +neurocipher yes it does happen to me too. It helps to have a piece of scrap paper to test your lines and remove excess ink from the tip

    • @AnastasiaR
      @AnastasiaR Před 6 lety

      neurocipher I've noticed some brands do that more than others. Lately I've been enjoying the papermate ink joy pens (but not the gel ones) on mix Media paper. The slightly more textured paper helps too. Bristol is my favorite paper but for ballpoint pen I find I can get finer lines that are more reliable on mix media. I still have to sometimes wipe off the end of the pen on scrap paper though.

    • @petkopetzev1686
      @petkopetzev1686 Před 6 lety +2

      Whenever I draw with ballpoint pens, I use a little tissue (toilet paper does it for me) to periodically wipe off the accumulated ink on the tip that causes the smudging - it's as simple as that :)

    • @JSheetzArtwork
      @JSheetzArtwork Před 6 lety
