VIDEO DESCRIPTION
In this video tutorial series of Ballpoint Pen Drawing Tips I share some simple tips that shows how the ballpoint is a cheap but very effective pen and ink drawing tool for practicing and mastering the basics of pen and ink drawing and shading.
This video focuses on providing tips on how to take advantage of being able to draw lightly with a ballpoint pen.
Oh snap, I didn't realize he was the artist of the Pen and Ink series! Those books are top notch!
a ballpoint pen is my favorite. totally agree with your tips!

@@carti4437 why lmao
I found your tutorials looking for Inktober resources, they are great! Thanks so much for making them.
AD, you will continue to have admirers for many years. this is from your last comment four years ago, and I am in awe from so many of your teachings and elucidations. Humbled as always by your own work to educate and spread such a wonderful craft. No amount of thank you is enough. Thank you all the same.
Brilliant stuff man!
merci beaucoup, c'est très intéressant.
Damn Dunn you a genius!! God Bless!!!
I love ballpoint pens! Once I picked one up to sketch with and got a handle for it I never went back to pencil for my sketchbook drawings.
I bought your book!! I AM SOOO HAPPY WITH IT!
Totally agree with your love of ballpoint pens. As a beginner I tried all sorts of pens, pencils, etc. and have arrived at my perfect, all-around drawing tool: the ballpoint pen -- for exactly the reasons you put forth. And once I began adding watercolor washes to my sketches, often growing frustrated with inks that smeared, what perfect tool emerged once again: the lowly and magnificent BIC ballpoint pen. The ink is waterproof, doesn't smear and holds its line. Thanks, Alphonso, great information as always.
+Jack Jenkins well said. Theyre super great tools!
I fail to achieve the value range Alphonso is demonstrating, light strokes are erratic at best. Paper quality maybe? I use BICs and a cheapo sketchbook
Obrigado pelo vídeo! Futuramente comprarei seu livro de inking art pen.
Got your book. It's awesome!!!!! Thank you for creating it! Also love your videos.

Glad to see HD on your newer videos. Love them regardless, but it's a great boon going from 480 to 1080. =)
+jminyard504 lol
First of all thanks very much for this post. I have a suggestion if you don't mind. Would it be a good idea ( I got this from the comment of Jack Jenkins) to draw something with the ball point and add water color to it? It would be interesting to see you tackle it. Hope I am not abusing your generosity. Again thanks a million for all the wonderful posts.
These are amazing tips. I agree that the ballpoint pen is so underutilized. I remember thinking I completely invented the shading techniques myself while sketching on my notes in high school. Haha
+Anastasia Rath yup theyre awesome. They have filled plenty a notebooks lol
That iconic TD bank pen.
Ballpoint pens are wonderful for sketching!
+scotcampbellart yup, thats next

+Manga Dog those are coming
I would love to see you do scenery art with this pen.
The technical term is "Landscape". Lol
Could you please do a tutorial on how to capture shadows versus creases using pen ink ink? Really ejoy your vids.
+Alphonso Dunn Can you also do a tutorial on ballpoint pen drawing exercises (just to make your ballpoint pen drawing skills better)?
Great
+Nada Khalil ارسم مع ندى خليل : )
Neat. Despite recently buying some microns, I tend to return to cheaper, more disposable pens like those ballpoints because they have a nice rough quality.
+Chedring they are indeed durable and add some variety to your supplies and approach
and we don't waste our good pens practicing.. although its funner using the good stuff that flows..
can you do a human anatomy series pleaseee. i find even your two, 'How to draw human anatomy' videos some of the best, easiest to follow and very effecient.
+Ju Gb yes, I definitely plan to resume that series
thank you
+Ajax very welcome
I agree with you that a ballpoint pen is an incredibly versatile drawing instrument, but I ve only mastered using hatching and cross hatching techniques to shade with a ballpoint pen. For some strange reason, no matter how much I try, I cannot use gradient shading with a ballpoint pen.
It takes alot of patience
THE Ballpoint Pen virtuoso has spoken!
+PinkPonyOfPrey 👀whos that
Ssssssh!
It's that guy over there!
Btw ... who are you?
讚
One thing not mentioned is that they can produce consistently sharp lines
could you show how to sketch and cross hatch an angled gourd? using pencils?
hmmm nice one
wow u actually replied. i tried to draw that for my drawing subject in uni but i think it looks terrible :(
Did you do practice sketches before?
Probably best to use extrafine (0.5mm) point rather than say the bold (1mm) point ballpoint I use to write with. Richard Johnson does amazing field drawings with blue ink
+Iris Gross yup, fine is fine too : )
Have you ever noticed that with ballpoint pens the ink starts to build up on the tip and eventually comes off in this huge glob?
Other than wiping it off every now and again, is there anything you can do to prevent this? Does paper choice matter? (ex: plate bristol)
Oh, man, I hate that more than cilantro!!! :D
Only thing I can say is some pens are worse than others so I just give up on pens, brands, models and/or types that do that and find another one.
+neurocipher yes it does happen to me too. It helps to have a piece of scrap paper to test your lines and remove excess ink from the tip
neurocipher I've noticed some brands do that more than others. Lately I've been enjoying the papermate ink joy pens (but not the gel ones) on mix Media paper. The slightly more textured paper helps too. Bristol is my favorite paper but for ballpoint pen I find I can get finer lines that are more reliable on mix media. I still have to sometimes wipe off the end of the pen on scrap paper though.
This is my main complaint about ballpoint pens.
Bic extra smooth pens are good about have less of that
Please what's the best method of shading using pen?
Hatching? Cross-hatching? Pointlism? Or another?
Watched video in slow motion until i got it. Thanks bro
: )
My only complaint with ballpoint pens, and I say this from the bottom of my heart, is that *yellow is almost impossible to find*.
When i draw with ballpoint pen it smears and smudges all over. Its my favorite to draw with but the smearing ruins my sketching. Any suggestions?
Whenever I draw with ballpoint pens, I use a little tissue (toilet paper does it for me) to periodically wipe off the accumulated ink on the tip that causes the smudging - it's as simple as that :)
Petko PetzevI already do that but Im talking about the smudging caused by touching the paper while im drawing with ballpoint.
good teaacher
+Kim Noah : ) thanks
i seeing this video channel i thinking bob ross
How to shade light objects with ink?
+Joseph Stalin This may help czcams.com/video/RbJNmqTYtbw/video.html
