Hi Ken. I bought this lens from Japan, about 2 years ago and it rocks. Cool to see you review it, and recommend it so highly. I have seen a few users on Flickr adapting it to high end Canon users. It is fantastic on my D800. And yes, wide open it is fantastic! Cheers, Eric
Oh my God, I just bought this lens a few days ago and that was before your recommendation, for 230 $, here in Serbia, as good as new.
Your right, its sharp wide open and blurs the hell out of background.
Your video just made me even happier about my purchase, thanks Ken
hehehehehe!!!
Thanks to Ken you may be able to flip it for a profit?
The other Nikkor as sharp or sharper than this lens wide open is the equally stunning (and legendary) Nikkor 180mm f/2.8 ED AI-s - a lens I don't recall you ever mentioning. It was designed to excel wide open.
The best is actually the nikkor 135mm f2 aisâŠ.trust me, try it out
I got this lens about two months ago for $450 on eBay from Japan!! What a great lens:)
I did it. Got one a few weeks ago and you are absolutely correct. Wide-open, this lens is the shiznick! I already own the vintage F2.5 and resisted the temptation to get the F1.8 but man I'm glad it did.
Used this one for a few years now. Every single time i have put it on sale to lighten up my kit, i've withdrawn sale in the last minute. Can't sell it. By the way this one cant be your last nikon recommendation. You missed out the Nikon 28mm F2 AI. Another favorite of all time for the color and contrast it produces!
Ken, just received mine today, I ordered it from Japan during your pre-video announcement last week. All I can say is, where has this lens been all my life? been shooting with nikons since i got the FA in the early eighties. still have that and it works! thanks so much, Ken.
heheheheh!!!!!!!!
such a shame there are no more good ones out there
I finally purchased a TOP MINT condition Nikkor 105mm f/1.8 AI-S from Japan on eBay. It wasn't cheap back in the day, and still not cheap today. There is a reason for that. I love it when I can look through the viewfinder and SEE the difference. It also feels good operationally in your hands. Maybe it is because I have big hands. I just wish I could have had one of these back in high school. I agree with you, the 85mm f/1.4 AI-S, and 135mm f/2 AI-S are also outstanding lenses.
This lens was around $200-$300 I got mines for $360. A day after this video. So glad I got it when I did because now there $500 and up.
Nikkor 105mm 1.8 ais - Just in case you wanna skip the boring bits.
Thanks. But Ken is never boring.
Thank you that's 10mn I wait to get that
thank you!
Thank you ! đ
Thank you!
I bought it, the Angry Photographer is 100% right. This lens is Stunning for Portraits!
Ok bust me, just bought my daughter and myself a d7500 each, Iâm using the âŠ..,18-300 lens!!
I have just ordered it today from eBay! Thks for helping me to choose by watching all your videos about the 105-s.
I used to have this lens in my bag in my newspaper days in the 1990s. A lovely lens indeed. It was the office kit so long gone. Thanks for the nostalgia trip.
Average price in the US is around $650-$800. Love the lens, wish I could afford one. Keeping my money for the D850.
DFRANCO no. Average is $450
Can you send me a link then as I would love to buy this lens.
I used to have this and I really really miss it except the weight...but I do miss it
Just checked the Flickr page. Wow! There are some tack-sharp photos and the backgrounds turn into a buttery blur. I want one!
BTW, thanks for the line to Robert's/UsedPhotoPro! Found a great deal this weekend on a 'mint' condition lens. I'll send you a pizza!
Micro-nikkor auto 55mm f3.5
Hi Ken, I have bought many of my AiS lenses based on your recommendations thanks for that. The 105 f1.8 was on mind since I had seen it elsewhere before this announcement the cheapest was around ÂŁ400. There are at least two lenses you haven't tried 300mm AFI ED f2 and the 1200-1700mm f/5.6-8 ED
that lens costs a shitton, the f2 300mm, and i have used it.
Brilliant, when you do get your hands on it again we would love to see some samples, it must be magical.
I had the 105 1.8 AIs , it was really really good in the first row of a concert. I left the 2.5 at home.
A bit ago I had to choose between two lenses for portraits..this lens and the Nikon 135mm f2 ais..I chose the 135mm cuz of the focal length and IM super happy with it..but was rrreeeally interested in this 105..happy u made a video for it :)
also a killer lens, 135mm f2 DC better of course, but costs much more. got both
The 135mm f2 ais is really special, I am surprised Ken missed it
A challenge you likely can't handle, I'm not really into photography but I enjoy your technical and personal perspectives on all the equipment, The Challenge- can you compile a list of your top 10 lenses, period, no qualifiers, just straight up - top 10. I think it would be very interesting. Everyone understand there are other. .... people..... that will try to shoot your list down. . But we don't care. .. just a top 10 list.
top 10 for what
I was thinking a list of top 10 regardless of camera. I went back and saw where you had done a few vids of the best lenses for certain cameras. BUT.. You stated numerous time what a lens. .slĂt you are. ..lol. so I thought you would have 10 favs... photographers. ... worse than a bunch of pilots... like the old joke, You go to a party, how do you know who's a pilot(photographer)? Answer: They will tell you. You guys are so touchy touchy touchy... how about a single lens.... 1 regardless of platform. ... just the one lens - stuck on a desert island. ... just one. ..
Hey, thanks, I didn't find that one earlier, great video. .. I think his head was actually bigger then..... LOL#
top 10 for what????
Damn i can never find any of your recommendations on evay in a fair price or a good condition:( best lens i bought of your recommendation is the 20 1.8g and i am soo happy with it its a multi porpose lens!!!!
I am switching from Canon 6D to Nikon D810, I do mostly landscapes and I am still hesitating between the Zeiss Distagon 21mm f/2.8 versus the Nikkor 20mm f/1.8, which one would you recommend ? (Money is not an issue and I do not mind the manual focus on the Zeiss)
Had to sign a release today at Walmart to pickup five 8x10 photos. Used a Nikon 24mm 2.8 Ai. With a lens like this I'd probably have to make bail. Lol!
You will be the only one I listen to for lens for Nikon
Ken, plz, now that the D850 stole your heart from the X-T2, don't abandon us Fuji users! Keep making fuji recommendations!
i said the XT2 is my fave camera :)
Ken, why do you always specify the 105 f2 DC over the 135 with the same formula and longer reach? I know one of them is in my future, just can't decide which one.
Thanks Ken. Would have ordered one if I trusted the south african post-office/government/anyone. Maybe one available locally somewhere...
PS: love the outro music.
I actually prefer the images from the f2.
Hello - just got one! A real beauty indeed đ im also diggin the 55 1.2
you should do lens guessing more sounds fun enough
Hi Ken! Please make a video with all recommended Nikon(no third party) from wide to tele. Thanks, Victor
It has a 9 straight-bladed diaphragm - not rounded. Great sunstars!
Ken.....you have said your favorite all time lens is the Distagon and you have recently given a review of the Mitakon 35mm 0/95 ...where are you now after reviewing the mitakon 0/95 ..... which would you buy 1st, the Distagon T 35mm f/2 or the Mitakon 35 0/95 mark ii for the Fujifilm xt2
I do mostly portraits but crave one of these. My other hard decision is to keep my nikon 85 1.4 ais or update to the Mitakon 85 1.2, if I wanted to drive myself crazy crazy...I'd consider the fujifil 90 f2 because it is fast and I shoot dogs on crack very often.
Thank you you are the absolute best!
fuji 90 f2 is the best for fuji cameras
Would love one but getting lenses like this in the UK is a major pain in the ass.
Wow images look awesome.
THANKYOU...
Hey Kenny - thanks for all your hard work !!! - My whole camera bag is full or your recommendations!! Would you own this in addition to the 105mm 2.5ais - how do they compare? BTW I love the cursing - be yourself dude !!
where can view your work? Love the youtube information but would also like to see your photos.
Thanks ken! I was saving up for this one now they'll be ALL GONE! đ
hehehe, nahhhh japan has plenty
About to grab this lens with a 135 2.8 ais and 300 4.5 ais bundled for $450
I sold those exact same lenses on eBay about a year ago..... probably to you lol
@@RodrigoAReyes95 oh wow! If the lens isnt set correctly on the 105 then, yes, I bought them. I kept the 105 and sold the other two lenses.
Best Nikon lens for taking photographs of paintings
repro work, 60mm 2.8 D AF
@@KenTheoriaApophasis thankyou. I will buy lens suggested by you for taking photos of my paintings.
Do own and love 105mm f2.5 Ai-s & baby brother 100mm f2.8 e-series. They are my current favorites. Am I missing a stop?
I checked with the seller who seemed dubious whether the NIKON 28mm PC lens would fit and work with my NIKON D810. What is your understanding?
oh hell yes it will work
@@KenTheoriaApophasis what do you think of the NIKON 35mm PC lens?
Do you have an opinion of the Nikkor 3m PC?
Error 35mm PC
Superb ! thank you Kenneth!
love this lens. what adapter do you use for nikon to fuji?
The lenses I really want for a dx camera is the Nikon 17-55 and Tamron 70-200 g2 id be so happy with those lenses
Edward Hines I bet I'm saving up for them
this video is fun to watch
Got it, sec hand from germany. It is unglaublich schön
most photographers say the 85mm 1.4 is there fav.....your thoughts??....does nikon still sell this lens?
i own tons of diff 85mm, more than anyone, including exotic crap, but honestly i prefer 100-105mm better
Hey Ken excellent show. I reckon a few people would appreciate your tips for buying a used lens. How would you suggest testing a lens
before handing over the cash? cheers Rick in Australia
How does it compare to my 105mm f2.5?
ohhh i answered that below several times :)
BTW the manual Nikkor 20mm 1:4 on my Fuji X-T1 is an amazing combination.
105mm 1.8 ais vs Zeiss planar 85mm 1.4? comparing photos on Flickr, hard to see major differences.
Hey Ken, I was wondering, what's your favorite type of coffee bean types and brewing methods?
Jamaican blue mountain :P. cheap and dirty drip, or the french press i got last month
Theoria Apophasis indonesia luwak coffee made by cat poop coffee. You must try this.
will taste this J.B.M. Coffee today at a local cafe here, and revert
Jamaican Blue Mountain is EXCELLENT!!!!!!! I live in Kona (Big Island, Hawaii) up in the coffee country and know Good Coffee so that says a lot! I really enjoy certified organic grown, and my friend has a farm in much lower altitude than most here, in Kealakekua, and the lower altitude, the higher the caffeine content!!!! His takes so few beans to grind and brew a pot, and it has a natural sweet taste, almost like tea with honey!!!! Amazing!!!!! Organic grown has a distinct lack of any bitter aftertaste, and it just rocks!! BTW, thanks for your advise! I have bought many lenses based on your recommendations, and just at sunset last night, I was shooting with both the Voigtlander 58 f 1,4 noct and Tokina 100mm f 2.8 macro, and those lenses are just incredible! So much better than so many other supposedly "Excellent" lenses in so many regards! And the sharpness and clarity in such clear atmospheric conditions like we had yesterday eve are mind blowing, especially noticeable if you enlarge to 100% + compared to other lenses! Thanks so much!!!!! Wish I could send you a lb. of some of my favorite kona coffee!? My 2 friends farms are certified organic, and they have both won the Kona coffee "cupping contest" numerous years!!!! Aloha from Hawaii Ken! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise!
Hello sir
Is the pre AI version of this lens just as good ?
Ken, What about the 105 2.5?
Damn, missed a second hand of this one last week!
Hi Ken and guys :)
I have the option to buy the:
135 f2.8 ai
105 f2.5 Ai-s
I am a beginner but struggling.
Which on is better? I like to use it for a friends wedding + for some Live roleplay.
skarmarl . I own both lenses. Both are great but if I had to keep only one it would be the 105 2.5.
How would you compare to the Nikkor 105 f2.5?
this cost a LOT more, and is a LOT bigger,.....this is a better lens in sharpness and saturation, but both are awesome
I finally see why you almost always have this lens stuck onto your fuji in your other videos
Salute you so much ken. Keep up your hard work.
I got a very minty one from Japan đ
Please send me an email before you make the video, I can't afford it now!!!
That is pretty sweet
Please don't kill me Ken, but what is must own Canon lens? :) ( I'm a canon user, but most of my lenses are Nikkor, and the only Canon lens I own is the 50mm 1.8 plastic one !)
UR asking the wrong guy on canon glass
I'm in market for buying either D700 or D7100, very tough choice ! is killing me !
thank you
Get the D700 you won't regret it. I also own a d500 (awesome wildlife beast) but for landscapes and people photos the d700 wins hands down. Don't worry about the 12MP either - you can still print big!
you know what happened Andrew? I bought both ! lol
If gonna invest $350 for portrait,
would you go for THIS or the Tokina 100mm 2.8?
for portraiture, this lens.... however this is a MF lens... the tokina is bit sharper however
THX bro ... u rock!
hahah
"you are an idiot"
:D this is for the next t-shirt after "compared to what"
Just took a look on ebay around ÂŁ400
What lens do you recommend for my D500 like walk around lens; I am going to France soon and I want a sharp bad ass lens for that trip, something like a 24-70mm for a crop sensor Thank you. I love your channel perhaps the best in photography : )
17-55 f2.8 DX is a super duper lens!
What do you think of the metabones speed booster ultra f to x mount? Is a regular adapter preferable?
YourVinylAddiction that stuff is junk
How would you compare it to the 105mm f2.5 ais?
ive got half a dozen of those, it doesnt compare, its got better saturation and quite a lot sharper
but it costs nearly 3X as much and nearly 3X as big too.
Used to have one myself bought for about $250, unfortunately stolen from me while traveling in Europe :( guess these won't go for cheap now haha
stolen!!!! a thief who knows quality :/
Not the lens alone, it went with my entire camera bag! Slowly building it back up though :)
How is it compared to the tokina 100mm lens you recommend?
better bokeh, saturation, microcon., but this is a lens for diff purpose, of course, but both are crossovers to each other of course
Theoria Apophasis thank you I purchased the tokina for product photography and I'm very happy with it. I guess this is more of a portraiture lens. Win win
The 100 mm F2.8 Series E ain't bad either.
How does this compare to Nikkor 105/2.5? Which is better?
I love my 2.5 as well bought it the day AP did his afghan girl vid on it
this cost a LOT more, and is a LOT bigger,.....this is a better lens in sharpness and saturation, but both are awesome
Thank you Ken.
The reason why I asked this question was that in an earlier video you had spoken very highly of the Nikon 105/2.5 and the famous Afghan Girl portrait of Steve McCurry!
Hallo Ken.Why not the zeiss 100 f2 macro? If price is not a parameter which one would you pick?
i have that lens, hellllll no
I know you got the zeiss too.I want the zeiss...Its fucking pricey 1600 euros here. The new one milvus look like shit the colour and micro contrast though is exceptional, on a d850 this lens macro shots look like medium format. So you say no to zeiss 100mm f2 for portraits!
@@KenTheoriaApophasis I would actually love to hear what you think of this comparison, since I can get both of these, the zeiss 100mm f2 and the nikon 105mm f1.8 for about the same price (yes a ridiculously low price on the zeiss)
Will check it out.
How does this perform against the xf 90 f2 on an XT-2 Ken?
thats a radical comparison.....so to say.... did you see the flickr page for the lens below?
the 90mm is ultrasharp but clinical, this lens is divine for BW, and best straight out of camera (SOOC) saturated and bokeh superrich pics.
105mm f1.4
Hi Ken, after so many lenses bought out from your recommendation I wonder what lens you suggest instead of 14-24 2.8 due to high price. Low light is the main concern. I wonder what lens can be found for low light, super wide zoom and costs less than a 14-24mm 2.8 ? What's your thought on that? Thanks man.. :)
easy, tamron 15-30, its superior in every way. i own both
Theoria Apophasis...I thought so...thanks a lot for the reply.
Just bought...looking forward to play :)
Love it!! However at f2.8 and 15mm it has a bit of lens distortion. Agree or is it something wrong with my lens? Cheers Ken
its a wide angle zoom wide open ... itll have some distortion
Ken I need a lens wider that 35mm, what would you recommend? I'm shooting with a DX camera, don't care for autofocus. Both zoom and prime recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
for what camera and budget
About $300 for a D3300.
how about the 135 ai f2.8?
That s radioactive lens? Isn't it?
kim mak nooooo not 1980 or 1970 lenses
Thanks for your reply... Good to know. I am spending on your channel more than Australian TV shows...ahah~~~
I gave up my nikkor and moved to contax zeiss
What are the 5 must have non-fuji lenses for the xt2 (for portraits).
35mm mitakon, 58mm 1.4 Voigtlander....85mm mitakon 1.2 ...
Big man , how do I get the live stream
What about on apsc?
im using it ON a APSC fuji right now.... just diff crop factor, same lens, same image.
Have you tried this lens on the GFX yet? Been anxious to try my copy but haven't picked up an adapter yet.
The price has already gone up 100$ since last night
i saw that,.....well IM NOT selling any of em.
sharp as piss! I piss razor blades all day!!
Ais is bokeh king can u do comparison of how this lense is xt2 vs d500
whut?
Put this lense on a xt2 and then a d500 and make a video comparison which looks better. I hate fujifilm but i might get a xt2 if these lenses look good. If? Thanks đ
I also think these 80s nikkor gems golden ice cream lenses make the best bokeh period. Long live nikonanf nikkor.đŠđŸđŠ
hate fuji??ohhhhhhhhhhhh , theyre making the best cameras currently..... this lens is teh tits on the fujifilm , i even said that in this video
rent a XT2 for 2 days to find out :)
nahhh, some of the german lenses make the best bokeh, old meyer optik, old pentax etc etc, fujinon
85mm f1.4 ais is better than this
Snagged!
ebay ehh? likely japan :)
Yep. US $429.99 from Japan :) Thanks Ken
likely youll get some SQUID JERKY with it, like i did years ago. ROFL
Radioactive!!
