    Janet did this song because She stated She'd always wanted to do a Rock song! She pulled that off big time!

    • @zmbdog
      @zmbdog Před 3 lety +41

      Yeah she said as a teen she was a big fan of Motley Crue, Poison and the like. She obviously knew what she was doing here. I don't think any other pop artist besides Janet or Michael could've pulled this off. Especially to the extent of hard rock/metal fans liking it. We will _pounce_ if a crossover comes off as pandering or inauthentic, which is probably why few attempt to dip their toes in the genre to begin with.

      @@zmbdog I think Lenny Cravitz, Prince and maybe even Bruno Mars could have done a great job at it, too. Especially Lenny & Prince and especially as a duet. I could also see Sheila E. on percussion and and back- up vocals on this track. Whatdayathink?

      @@virgilwyatt4632 I'm not familiar with Bruno Mars. Prince or Lenny Kravitz I could see but I've never thought of them as purely 'pop' stars. Lenny's always had a rock edge and Prince is like...experimental is what he does. I'm kinda surprised he hasn't ventured into metal. He actually commissioned Warrant's demos! They were done at Paisley Park and led to the band getting signed with Columbia.

    • @zmbdog
      @zmbdog Před 3 lety +6

      @@virgilwyatt4632 Okay somehow the second half of my comment is MIA. Weird, here's the redux...
      As far as someone firmly in mainstream pop...it's hard to imagine. Like, Madonna or Paula Abdul couldn't do this. You can just tell, they don't have it in them. Cher might. I can't seem to gauge her. I just see a game show mystery box. I'd say the closest to maybe doing it well would be Tina Turner or Bonnie Tyler. Vocally, no problem. I just question if they could write it. This one isn't just good, it's appropriate, lyrically. And I'd bet it happened naturally, she just wrote what she felt. I like "Escapade" but if this song had the same subject matter, it wouldn't gel. I think with Tina or Bonnie we'd probably get something along those lines at best and it would just seem disingenuous. I'd love to hear them do a metal cover. Especially Tina, I could see her getting up on stage even with something super-heavy and just blow it up!

      Perhaps I'm ignorant, but at what point was it taken from them? Modern "rock n rock" has without a doubt been heavily influenced by the early blues artists that were predominately black, there are a lot of similarities between the two genres. Song structures, chord progression and so on, but they are definitely their two different genres.
      Black Cat is a full on Heavy Rock song and that isn't typical associated with black artists. So as far as "reclaiming" rock and roll goes, it was never taken from them. The beauty of music is that people tend to reflect their musical heroes and you can hear it in their music, but that's not the same as taking something from someone. How many black artists can you name from the last century that wrote/performed rock songs like Black Cat?
      Janet just took a chance on something different from her norm and wrote a great song that I still love after all these years.

    July 24, 1990 saw Janet perform this on this tour in Indy's Market Square Arena. Awesome show by a great talent. Ah, the good old days! I remember sitting by a little girl that was lucky enough to get backstage to meet Janet and all she could talk about was how beautiful Janet's hair was.

    Janet looks so much like brother Michael in this video. The eyes, the smile, the snarl, etc. Both are fantastic dancers, singer, and all around entertainers. Both are spellbinding to watch. Never got to see Michael in concert but I did see Janet and she was absolutely awesome. They are such a talented family.

    I love her dance music, and her more pop songs, but Janet Jackson has a voice for rock n roll - I would love for her to put out an all rock album before she retires.

      Great tune and artist. We tried with my friend from R&O to review this great song. Maybe we succeeded, maybe not, we let you be the judge if you have two or three minutes to spare and a thumb up or down to add, come listen and judge us here :-) : czcams.com/video/jf3NHvyhmkI/video.html and stay safe

    One thing I've been impressed by in music is Janet Jackson's versatility. This song was a departure from her previous work and she killed it on this metal track. The late Lemmy loved it so much that he wanted to record his own version with Jackson, but his label, Sony Records, nixed that potential collabo.

    Funny how a singer mostly known for her RnB rhythmic songs or love soul/pop ballads did this rock super hit which in my opinion is her best song!
