Rubber bands were easier when I did this to my daughter’s hair ❤ Also I didn’t use that bun maker, and braided the hair while still attached to the rubber band it came on.

Be careful and avoid breakage with using rubber bands. Don't forget to soak them in oil.
I do agree with you on the initial braid being the fed in braided base. Therefore more of anchor ⚓ and not allowing the base move or become dislodged. Then I would attach - pin the other braided pieces as shown.
