- Yvonne Craig makes her TV series debut as Batgirl in her tight spandex costume. Yvonne's premiere was in season 3 of the "Batman" TV series on September 14th, 1967. Yvonne was an accomplished ballet dancer, which aided in her fight scenes. Trek fans may recognize Yvonne as the green Orion slave girl Marta from TOS.

@@billingram-jd8mm True. The way I see it, they were probably going to ship Robin off to college; they did in the comics in 1969 anyway. Then probably pair off Batman with Batgirl. At least that seems to be what they were planning, from what people on the show have said.
Not sure how Commissioner Gordon would feel about that.
My youthful TV crush. Loved seeing her rock that tight purple costume and stiletto boots. The eagle eye in me also noticed that in many of the more intense stunts/jumps she did, they changed her boots to a thicker heel (you can see this in frame by frame shots). I'm assuming they didn't want her landing on her feet in a small, skinnier heel. They edited the scenes fairly well, but it's noticeable.
Batgirl was brought in to hopefully save the series. Alas, it was all for naught, but we all enjoyed seeing a curvy crime fighter!
They wanted to give Batman a girlfriend because the rumors of Batman and Robin being Gay was swirling around since the 50's.

It also doesn't help that DC Comics keeps pairing Batman with a pubescent male Robin

The only ones who care about that sort of thing are the weirdos obsessed with who a superhero is sleeping with ..which is pretty much everyone who works at dc comics now

This was the 1st episode of the 3rd season. Penguin kidnapped Barbara to marry her & be the Commissioner's son-in-law. Also, Alfred was the Only one who knew ALL secret identities... & Swore to hide Batgirl's from Batman & Robin AKA his employers!

I find to be absolutely no coincidence that Batgirl's television debut came two months after the release of Norman Lear's Dick van Dyke-Debbie Reynolds starring film Divorce American Style. That Girl wasn't the only reason why her tv debut needed to come at this time. A film that exploits why marriage is fragile and why divorce alimony is blood-sucking, especially when it involves a non-working housewife who doesn't make employment income, showed a need to speed up working girls on television.

She was actually supposed to replace Robin. She's older, and female, and thus could pass for a love interest for Batman.
By the way, she's only the fourth female character created to butch up Batman and/or Robin. The others were this aunt and niece, Kathy and Betty Kane. Betty would later show up mostly in "big crowd" Teen Titans panels, while Kathy would be murdered by Ra's al Ghul. However, the third character, Wonder Girl, would become huge once Marv Wolfman started writing her, and in the post-Crisis continuity, she's actually the first woman with "wonder" in her name; interestingly, her many shifting origin stories are now considered an essential part of her character.

My first memory of him was in a spy show called Search (Search Control in England where my family was at the time). There was a show called Gloria which was a spinoff of All in the Family. He had a role in it. I probably only watched one episode and he laughed but was laughing like the Penguin. The audience got a laugh from it. Considering how short a run it had that may have been the high point of the show!

Batman & Robin get captured by the hoods but Batgirl is able to easily overpower that same gang all by herself. I guess she was the real super star of the show. But this may well be why the show declined in popularity.
