  • When two different bands hit the road, it's inevitable for them to have a feud, especially if one is a supporting act and less famous than the other. Though both Rush and Aerosmith are two of the biggest rock bands in the world now, there was a time one supported the other, and Geddy Lee had an unpleasant experience with Joe Perry and Steven Tyler. Keep watching to see how Lee behaved after their tour and proved how noble he was.

Yes, he and Tyler were wasted off their ass every time I ever saw them. I’m certainly not surprised to hear that Perry and Tyler treated Rush like crap when they toured and I’m even less surprised that Geddy, Neil and Alex returned the favor with kindness.
I know Rush are all very humble guys, which is miraculous since they are some of the most talented musicians of the 20 and 21st Century. This is why I tell people that Rush was the best band live. I was at every tour since Permanent Waves and I had never seen a band work so hard to accurately reproduce their music.
I was lucky to come up in a time that some of the greatest bands came out in, but just like with Joe Perry, many other bands seemed toasted out of their skulls, playing sloppy and having long pauses between songs while they tried to be comedians.
If I wanted to see comedians, I would buy a ticket to see a good comedian, like Richard Prior or George Carlin, just play your music already and leave the jokes to a proper comedian.
Even the great Zeppelin was less than stellar in the two concerts I went to. Page was completely wasted and playing like shit. The second Zeppelin concert I went to was in an outdoor arena and they played two songs before it began to rain a little and they fucking left the stage and refused to come back. No rain checks, I was pissed and so were 15,000 other people who paid to see Zeppelin.
That was how they treated their fans. Thunder storms in Florida always pass over quickly and as normal, within twenty minutes the rain had stopped, but those pussies wouldn’t come back out on stage. Doesn’t matter, because John Bonham (RIP) was even more wasted than Page.
The guys from Rush never seemed high, much less wasted off of their asses. I got tired of groups charging me good money for tickets only to perform poorly because they have taken several different drugs. I actually don’t see how Tyler has lived this long with all of the drugs he’s done, but then again, Ozzie is still with us somehow?

@@RoarOfWolverine couldn't agree with you more. I have seen almost every Rush tour since hemispheres. The only time Aerosmith totally kicked ass was in1976 "Rocks" tour with Rick Derringer in Philadelphia. Other shows/tours got progressively loose and sloppy. No sizzle in that steak. Just burned up/out old flesh. Rush however got increasingly better. And technology just made the sound and visuals amazing. So happy I was able to see their farewell tour. That's the way to close that part of a stellar career.

@@williamgraw1729 It’s amazing how lucky we are to have grown up during the 60s, 70s and 80s. The 90s wasn’t too bad, but not as many classic bands as the other 3 decades. (Sorry if I assumed your age to be in the geezer range with me. I grew up as a child in the 60s. I was born in 1960, which makes me 62 this year.)
We got to see groups like Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Ted Nugent, Queen, The Who and Led Zeppelin, just to name a few. Of course, I have to mention the greatest of all, Rush.
Rush is the one group I have seen live more than two or three times. None of the other group really toured as often as Rush. That’s what’s so great about them, they are the hardest working band in rock music.
I was watching a video of Triumph on CZcams recently. In the comments there were many people talking about Rush, because they’re both Canadian. Someone was comparing Gil and Neil and Gil replied to the comment and said that Peart was also his favorite drummer and then went on to write that they are without a doubt the hardest working band alive. Gil was saying that Rush worked much harder than them. Less partying and more practice. That’s why they are so great.
I think that in the long run, like 400 years from now, Rush will be held in a much higher regard for what they did. I have seen it, just over the last couple of decades, especially since the internet and CZcams.
Young people are discovering Rush, especially in reaction videos. It seems like a lot of this generation has a better appreciation for technical music than back in the 70s. Everyone was always telling me that Rush sucked and they wondered why I listen to them and went to their concerts.
I feel sorry for the young people who are just discovering Rush for the first time and will never get to see them live. You and I are very, very lucky to experience something that a lot of younger generations would pay a fortune to see. It’s really a pity.
When I was a teenager in the 70s, everyone was into Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Foghat, Foreigner and whatever bands were topping the charts on the top 40 list. No one knew who Rush was. The only friends I had that knew of Rush were my musician friends. In fact, it was a drummer I met in high school that first turned me on to Rush.
He kept telling me about some band from Canada who had a drummer better than Bonham. I was like, “get lost buddy. No one can even match John Bonham!” That’s what I thought, until he invited me over to his house to jam (I’m a guitarist). He put on 2112, which was freshly out at the time.
Just after the Overture we had to help lift my jaw from the floor. I thought I had heard everything., but that album just blew my ass away. Then I was like, “John who? Oh, Bonham, I forgot about him for a minute”.
I ran out and bought every Rush record out at the time, Rush, Fly By Night, Caress Of Steel, 2112 and All The World’s A Stage and learned every lick Lifeson ever recorded. I became a dedicated Rush fanatic after that. Didn’t get to see them live until Permanent Waves, but never missed a tour since.
…and yes, their farewell tour was going out with a bang! It was so hard to believe that they were in their 60s and still outperforming bands half their age. I also liked that they dropped opening acts on the Vapor Trails tour and just put on a three hour show by themselves. Neil Peart was a beast, even at 60 years old he could put 22 year old drummers under the table.
Rush fans are some of the most dedicated fan base and Rush really appreciated the fans and worked very hard to always give us a great show, so we knew their last tour would end with a bang and it did.
I loved the way they started with all of the huge Marshall and Ampeg amp stacks in the background, but the roadies kept coming on stage taking some away and changing the configuration, until they got down to two very small amp/speaker combos and the setting looked like a gymnasium with a hoop in the background. What a perfect touch.

They decided the formula for success was to do the right things. That doesn't make them perfect, but it sets a standard. Even Gene Simmons from Kiss said they were boring because they weren't out partying. Today, they have solid families and give back to their communities. Many could learn lessons from them. Aerosmith were notorious for treating opening acts like shit. Kiss(The band threatened to throw all of Aerosmith's equipment in the orchestra pit if they didn't move it toward the back so Kiss could have room to play, Switchblade knives were drawn and a roadie ended up getting locked in a flight case), Kansas, Rush, Boston...... Kansas is the funniest story. Kansas played a few shows opening for Aerosmith. When Aerosmith felt like Kansas were stealing the show Steven Tyler would pull the plug on their set literally. They would lose power and have to leave the stage. Kansas caught wind of this and had their roadies install fake power cords on one side of the stage, Kansas were playing in their home town and the crowd were loving it. Steven wanted the power pulled and the roadies proceeded to pull the plugs but to no avail. Steven went running over and started helping trace the plugs but couldn't figure it out so as Kansas finished their set Steven was on the side of the stage chewing his gum maniacally and was ready to kick their ass until Dave Hope, the bassist of Kansas that stood 6'3" and weighted about 200 pounds at the time asked Steven if there was an issue and Steven said no and walked away.

Upon thinking about it I'm more than certain in the drugged out haze Aerosmith lived in for much of the 70's this may not be something that was remembered. The noteworthy point of the story is that RUSH proved themselves to be not only one of the finest bands that ever existed but some of the finest human beings also!

Hey Rush fans. Take a cue from Geddy, and be better. Joe Perry clearly felt bad about what happened, and apologized. Why would that have to turn into a bunch of snide comments at the expense of Aerosmith? You're not taking the high road that Geddy and Rush took. Though I love both bands, Rush is higher in my personal list because I love Prog Rock. But Aerosmith, to me, was the premiere American band in the 70s. The main point of the video is how noble Geddy was about the incident, but another point is that Perry regretted it, and stood up like a man, took some responsibility, and apologized. Bashing Aerosmith shows you missed the entire point here.
