  • Meat and sweet combos, soup sandwiches, and so much Jell-O. The 1950s was marketed as a time of domestic bliss, but was it? Was the strange food they churned out a comment on how it wasn't all it was cracked up to be? It's entirely possible.

No. Food, like everything else, has gotten out of hand. I'd like to see a bit more of the simpler dishes that tasted like what it was made of instead of the new, improved flavors that taste like nothing I can identify. Ah well, that's progress for ya. ❤️

People still cook with Campbell's soups today. Try searing pork chops or loin, mixing your favorite cream of (chicken, mushroom, celery, broccoli, etc) Campbell's soup with a half soup can of milk, pour in a baking dish, add the pork, spoon some soup on top of the chops and bake, covered 45-60 minutes. Bomb flavor, the soup becomes yummy gravy for mashed potatoes or rice and the meat you can cut with a fork!
Jell-O dishes were very popular and still are. I have all my mom's copper Jell-O molds. In the 50s, my mom made a Jell-O fruit salad every holiday meal. She made 2 big packages of red Jell-O using half the amount of cold water (or the juice from a can of fruit cocktail), set the Jell-O then beat it with a mixer until it was in fine pieces. Then she stirred in drained cans of fruit cocktail, mandarin oranges, a cubed apple, a banana or two, chopped walnuts and whipped cream. We're on our 3rd generation of this holiday favorite but we leave out the banana and nuts (the banana turns brown by the next day & some don't like nuts). In the 80s we made Jell-O cakes that were delicious! Lastly, when Jell-O and Knox gelatin came on the market it was an opportunity for the average American to finally have something only the rich could afford previously. The prior process of making gelatin from animal feet, horns and hooves into something that could "gel" into either a sweet or savory dish was so labor intensive and required refrigeration that only the rich could afford it. Therefore, women in the 40s and 50s used it like crazy, and everyone was on the bandwagon to create something new with it.
Ambrosia, still loved by many. We put shredded coconut in ours. And, the ribbon loaf was delicious! We knew it wasn't cake and you're really going to pooh pooh a raw tomato garnish? Please.
As far as canned hamburger, we never saw that in our part of America but my grandmother canned venison burger meat every year. Mixed in a white gravy and poured over biscuits or toast was her version of SOS. You make it sound as if Spam was the only canned alternative to canned hamburger but there was, and still is, canned beef, chicken, ham, corned beef, tuna, salmon, mackerel, oysters, sardines, kippers, clams and more.
All in all, this video insults the average American who lived during those times coming out of a depression and a World War who were happy to have food at all and grateful for new products and the money to buy them!

Ambrosia salad is amazing and delicious! The end result of mixing sour cream and marshmallows is basically like a sweetened whipped cream, ie, Cool Whip. And the ribbon loaf did not have sweet cream cheese icing like you would have on a cake, it was a savory cream cheese spread. It's called a sandwich loaf because you would slice it and place a slice between bread. No one would expect a sandwich loaf to taste like cake!

way back then/when my mother used to make something similar to the Ribbon Loaf. She called hers a Sandwich Loaf. not sure when or where she got this idea but if I remember right, there was ham salad, egg salad, chicken salad I think and pimento loaf. The bread was cue lengthwise, crust taken off then smeared with the Cream Cheese. there were 6 of us in the family and we all loved it, Dad loved it the most. but when I was a kid I didn't like cream cheese so I'd scrape it off. LOL Of course I love cream cheese now, 65 years later, but haven't made the sandwich loaf, me and my 2 remaining brothers talk about it all the time trying to remember if there were more than the other ingredients in it. Never did find her recipe for it. We don't get out much but not sure there is anyone who hadscapability of slicing the bread lengthwise. maybe we'll find someone some day.

I don't get why she thinks raw unseasoned tomatoes are distasteful. Personally I love tomatoes cooked or uncooked seasoned or not. Especially if they come fresh from my greenhouse.

When young, the only way I would eat bananas was to dip them in tomato sauce.

I don’t think that this is useful or helpful. Most of the items denigrated in this have roots in some sort of dish from Europe, brought over by immigrants and adopted over time in the U.S. As an example, the savory cake, this is simply “voileipäkakku” or “leipäkakku” (Finland) or a Scandinavian Sandwich Cake, so a Nordic dish. Sure, it’s a bit old-fashioned, but it’s still enjoyable and enjoyed by many. So instead of slamming these items, perhaps linking them to their origins and history and how they changed over time with a disclaimer that it is to taste and might not match our modern palates. Just an idea.

Scanned Pinterest for vintage ads with recipes. Most of those recipes were nasty at any time.
I once made a Ritz Crackers Mock Apple Pie. You read it correctly.

I've never seen a ambrosia recipe that requires sour cream? It usually asks for whipped cream. I think you guy's are just adding the sour cream to make it on this list and if the original recipe asked for sour cream now day's no one adds that to their ambrosia 🤨

My mom used to make lime jell-o, canned pineapple and cottage cheese (might have been ham, but we were vegetarians). It was just as delicious as it sounds! 🤢

maybe instead of shitting on recipes from the '50s, you could actually try making them? gelatin salads (aka aspics) have a long culinary history, and I'm guessing that some of the weirder ones (like ham and banana) probably tasted pretty good to the people publishing it - otherwise they wouldn't have published them.
