    I'm just a hobby painter. I stopped using any machines for sanding. The reason is the "pig tail" problem. By hand sanding I can hear it and stop and clean it. It sounds like the small birds in the garden tweeting LOL but a good tell. I've watched your vids for a long time and have learned so much! You're so right about how long it takes. Seems the closer you get to finishing the longer it takes! I've done the whole thing from engines (including my own machine work), drive trains and interiors but love the painting the most. Getting too old to start any big projects so your vids bring back good memories. Looks awesome!

    Hey man. Little tip
    Next time, if you bomb the costs on, then wait a week. Give it a 1200 block then leave it another 3 weeks or so and it will cure more thoroughly. The broken surface will let the solvents out 😊

    If your clear is good and hard you can try a wool pad at high speed and it should knock that clear down pretty fast.

      👍I tried the denim pads a few weeks ago 2000 grit they take out a fair bit of orange peel without sanding but they can be risky on burning edges and they are quite hard to handle on a rotary polisher

    Did my daily in Quartz Kristall clear, and I regret it a lot. When time came to wetsand imperfections and make the clear smooth I had a rough time getting the clear to polish like I wanted to. I ended up sand to 3000 grid and then using wool pad with sonax cutmax followed by yellow rupes with perfect finish. Spend days getting it done.
    Never had a problem with Liquid Glass, very nice clear coat.

    I have always had problems with sanding rings when using the 3m 1500. I was also surprised when you said that you were going to hit it with 1200 because for me every time I tried to block out clear coat with anything more than 1500 I always got deep sanding marks that took forever to get out.

    Hi again, just a quick update as I finally started polishing the mustang. I tried using powder guidecoat between most of the sanding grits and it worked remarkably well. It's a light coloured car so the black guidecoat I had was fine. I had a massive amount of dust in the job so after a lot of tungsten work I started with 800 on the acrylic Melomotive block and the black block where it was a bit more curvy. Just eyeballed the progress on the 800 grit until all the dust was flattened. Guide coated the 800 and started on the 1200 and it was very obvious when there was still 800 grit scratches. Next was another guide coat and then 2000. Once the 2000 was done I didn't bother with the guide coat again but hit it with the 3000 trizac. Polishing was done with a wool disc and Colad one-step compound. Probably a bit more work than I would have liked, but the end result was well worth it. flic.kr/p/2ps4Rhp flic.kr/p/2ps9zM5

    Man u have to get thr bosch 18v orbital sander that thing is a beast for 1500 on up da sanding this don't stop the good is starts up easy then go to speed I really like bosch m18 sanders u won't have no sandpaper pigtails at all like your videos

  • @JMMedia
    @JMMedia Před 6 měsíci

    Nice work Gunny. I’m doing a similar polishing process to my car but I’m using Kovax Buflex dry sand paper and having pretty good results, there’s a few stray pigtails here and there but not too bad. I reckon you should give it a try if you can get hold of some and compare it to 3m trizac (it would make a good video)
    I’m going 1500 dry - 2500 dry straight to compound with wool pad on rotary and finish with polish on a dual action
    For the left over pig tails that become visible after compounding I’ve been hand sanding with a bit of 2500 wet and back to wool pad
    I think that going in 500 grit increments will result in less pigtails and easier polishing; 1500 - 2000 - 2500 - 3000 but it’s more money and more time

    I’m a spray painter aswell and I only use Sonax polishes and I’ve never had an issue with Ultimate Cut being watery… did you shake it before? Make sure to give it a thorough shake before using it and you’ll be sweet as. If taken out up to p800 with it. Good luck!

    Can someone explain what’s the purpose of the soft interface pad on the orbital as apposed to the hard backing that’s on the machine, does the only difference it makes is just it sands a bit more faster and aggressive? It doesn’t change the actual grit of the paper on it right? Will 800 for example with soft pad be the same as 800 without the soft pad?

    • @TheGunmanChannel
      @TheGunmanChannel  Před 6 měsíci

      It's just less aggressive on edges etc, hard pads on orbitals can dig in if you're not very careful

      @@TheGunmanChannelyeah right thank you for that. Because I work with tradesmen and they always tell me with feathering out etc use the hard backing the go over it with soft pad but never explained why, so even if it’s the same sandpaper will going over the scratches from hard backing with 240 for example over it with the soft pad 240 even do anything? Thanks In advance

    I like paint that you can shave in... If the reflection is near flawless, the bodywork is near flawless. When I started blocking for reflection perfection I wouldn't use anything other than 1500 then 2000.
    NOW I realize if there is a little orange peel, hard block with 800 2 passes then a couple with 1000. I do love the 3000 /5000 foam pads.
    For final polishing I use a Cyclo Orbital twin 3" counter rotating polisher and/or a Makita geared dual action orbital which I love for final polish.

      Compound n pad combo is always a thing for testing depending on your surface and substrate but for what i see a mf cutting pad will knock down alot fast, then follow through with say maybe a medium foam pad to feather it in possibly polish. All depends on the end result you want

    Great job, I find using a sander with a 2.5mm orbit makes a big difference with fine grades like 1200 up, 5mm orbit is more for 320 - 800 grit
    I had the same issues with the 3m blue foam pads when wet they seem to suck down on to the panel and stop the da from rotating don’t know if it has something to do with the tiny holes on those pads, they are good pads for the money and definitely work better with smaller orbit orbital sander

    Hi gunman, love the learning process and that you finally achieved your desired result. I stumbled across a US site that does high end show jobs a while ago and although most of their procedures go way above what i would ever want to do there is some parts that are very informative. A recent (very long) episode was on polishing and they mentioned the use of powder guide coat during the polishing process to make sure that you get all the sanding scratches out of the various grits as you work up through them. I haven't tried this myself yet, but will try it on the mustang that I have just painted in the next month or so. Worth a watch. czcams.com/video/2meI3jnGajo/video.htmlsi=3INuG5g1QIumeb49
