    No one ever shows the set up part in these videos, Hard to check for distortion if you don’t know how to properly connect the SMD.

    Question, aren't we suppose to first make sure that the treble, bass and equalization is first set to flat? DSP settings off? Last question; if I'm not mistaken when you check the head unit with the SMD tracks wouldn't it be the first 2 tracks and not track 6 which is with overlap? Not picking just trying to understand the difference. Thanks for all the that you guys do for this industry. Keep it up!

    Got an idea...make a video showing the achievement of finding out max volumes of hu's with DD1...THEN, show the adjustments of eq'ing and adjusting the music. NO one does this and people ask the same friggin' question: "Do I have to listen to my music with flat settings and no adjustments?"

    I understand in this instructional video you use an aftermarket Pioneer. If I use a Toyota factory navigation head unit that is stepped down with a Rockford Fosgate DSR1 do I start at the DSR1 since that is where the RCA's begin in the chain? Or do I need to uninstall the DSR1 and use the factory speaker output leads to set the max volume level for the head unit first then move to the DSR1, reinstall it and set the max volume for the DSR1 in the chain and then finally the amps? I set my clipping fur my amps but neglected to accurately set clipping fur the factory head unit or the DSR1.

  • @blubag
    @blubag Před 8 lety

    This is a great video. Question: Why doesn't pioneer (or any other companies) just make headunits that provides 0 distortion at any volume any source? Thus the only thing you'd have to meter are the gains on the amp.

    • @FiveStarCarStereoInc
      @FiveStarCarStereoInc  Před 8 lety +1

      Right, totally agree. The reason is they would cost way to much. Yes some people would be willing to pay for this feature but most would not. Explaining quality to most people is a lost art form. We are living in the "good enough" time.

    @chukwuemekaonyema2716 Před 6 lety

    A/V input is probably the lowest and weakest source out of the bunch while bluetooth is probably the loudest. I jumped right to 38 and adjusted my amp gains after while keeping the source adjustment at 0 (started with bluetooth). What I seen was when I later went to adjust my weakest source, even at the highest source adjuster/volume, it didnt seem like I was getting my most potential, like it could SAFELY go louder if the volume had more increases.. Might sound backwards but I feel like starting your adjustments with the weakest signal may be best, definitely dont want to start with the loudest source (unless your only goal is to not blow speakers). You stand a chance of the strongest source getting to a max volume prior to radio's clipping max (distortion by 30 instead of 39) but atleast all the sources have a chance to reach max potential.

    • @chukwuemekaonyema2716
      @chukwuemekaonyema2716 Před 6 lety

      Actually AUX is the worst lol. I see options for 'speaker level'. Will using these hurt the distortion? In what order should we be getting the most out of things? Sounds like we should MAX out HU volume first, then MAX out amp gains (until clipping), then Source level adjustment? If I didnt want to adjust gains on amp due to location or whatever, how bad will it be to use the speaker level to make speakers louder? SLA seems to be specific to source so sounds like it should be the LAST adjustment used...

    I have seen examples of people updating firmware to gain extra features but is it possible to add a max volume setting via firmware? So that people can't accidentally turn your headunit up into clipping.
    Also do you have a record of head units that do not distort over rca? And the max voltage of each.

    @Five Star Car Stereo. I have a HPS140i oscilloscope and I also have a voltmeter. Would it be easier for me to use the oscilloscope to measure the max volume output on my Pioneer SPHDA120 and move onto setting the gains on both my amps? Or can I just do the old fashioned way of OHMS law and using the voltmeter at the amplifier. I'm sure these were reliable ways of doing it before the SMD DD1 came out? Also setting the crossovers, if I don't have the tools for setting the crossovers, is there a formula used so that the dials on the amp match with the crossover point you are setting?

    Hello guys at 5* car audio. Great video as usual, but I have a question. I have a pioneer ave-x2800bs and when using the pre-out from deck to DD-1 I get distortion at volume 12 and it does not trigger the 40hz or 1k signal light. If I go to the -dB tracks it will increase the max volume by 1 each -dB level that I change too. The only track that seems to work is the -15db track which I believe is track 8 and it’s signal light comes on around volume 32 and the distort light comes on at volume 39 of 40. My head unit has 3 sets of 4v preouts so I’m confused why it doesn’t seem to be functioning properly. Oh and my eq is flat and crossovers are off on deck. Any idea what may be wrong, or is this normal? Thanks in advance.

  • @supersportimpalass

    Wouldn't it be better to use a db meter and the sla to adjust the sources so they are all at the same volume? Then go back and check each source to find out where the clipping occurs on each one.
    It seems like your end result would be a better balance when switching between sources but still know the maximum volume before clipping.

    Hey, love the videos!!! I was wondering, I have a Pioneer DEH-80PRS and a 4-ch amp hooked up and would like to run some tweets off of the reciever as well. How can I compensate for the distortion/volume difference between the reciever amp's max clean level and the 4-ch max clean level? Can I check the reciever amp's max clean power with my DD1 and then adjust my outboard amp's gains until they're adjusted to match the reciever's volume? I want them to both be getting their full potential

    • @FiveStarCarStereoInc

      We did connect it to the RCA output. You can use it for the deck power too, we just did not think to do that.

    • @blubag
      @blubag Před 8 lety +1

      I don't think there are any youtube videos using the DD-1 to test distortion via radio speaker output let alone showing how its done. They are all how to videos just to test the RCA signal outputs. which is fine if you are using an interior amp and a sub amp. But for the average Joe, we just use a decent head unit for our interior speakers and a amp for the sub.
      I am just curious at what max volume is on the pioneer (specifically 4200nex) before it clips via radio speakers (not rca outputs) and how you would go about testing that using the DD-1. I am also curious if that volume number is the same as the RCA numbers. Then you could just say whatever your RCA output volume number is for distortion, your regular radio speaker output are the same and visa versa.
      (hope that makes sense lol)

      I asked the same thing. I thought you were sapos to put it on flat and they have it on powerful. Wonder if this effects the sub, or just the speaker outputs for the deck.

    What if you don't have a cd drive? I copied track files over to flash drive and they're not recognized.

    • @jeffh2125
      @jeffh2125 Před 3 lety

      I'm using EAC to convert to .wav files, but I hope that will work. In any case it seems like a bad decision to put the test files on cd only. For the $190, a $2 flash drive would have been the right thing to do.

    • @jeffh2125
      @jeffh2125 Před 3 lety

      That worked, but I found that the files are also downloadable on the SMD website - www.wccaraudio.com/downloads It amazes me that these files are not by default distributed on flash drive instead of cd. It also is sad that the manual doesn't mention the downloadable files when it first talks about the cd. It should state downloads as an alternative. Many more head units, if not all have a usb drive, but many don't have a cd drive. Makes no sense.

I have my subwoofers unplugged but I don’t know how to stop my midrange speakers( 2 6 1/2’s 2 4x10’s and 2 4x6’s so it’s realllllllly loud) from playing. Can anyone give my some input on what to do.

    Guys I need your help. I had a pioneer gm8601 which puts out 800watts certified @1ohm. I was pushing 2 8's with it at 1 ohm fine. I upgraded to a dual da6001 that puts out 1300watts certified but no matter what I do with the gain it barely has any output compared to my pioneer. I'm using RCA's from the back of my pioneer x65bt radio, ARE CERTAIN AMPS LESS SENSITIVE AND NEED MORE RCA VOLTAGE? Theres NO way I should have my gain almost maxed and still have barely any output?! I have to go on my radio and turn on "loudness" which is a total clip magnet! any idea what could be the reason my old weaker amp has much more output?

      Because dual makes garbage amps. Chances are that dual amp had false advertising. Stick with the pioneer buddy.

    Just max the vol(40) for all of the sources and increase/decrease SLA accordingly.
    Theres no point in finding where the volume clips if you can just decrease SLA.
    Its an unessasary step.

    • @ezequielmurillo266
      @ezequielmurillo266 Před 6 lety

      yesp, make sla in 0 and go up the volume, it will sound max and clear without distortion, sorry my english is bad

    • @bryanw8651
      @bryanw8651 Před 5 lety +1

      James H they r setting source levels compared to the fm source. If u were to turn it to 40 then turn down the sla the output would b lower than fm. The point here is to have a unified volume on ALL sources.
