  • Challenge Rules:
    - I can only use my starter in battle.
    - No items in trainer battles except held items.
    - No glitches, exploits, or RNG manipulations.
    First playthrough:
    - No Double Team, Substitute until level 100
    - 0 IVs across the board
    - Cheating for information is acceptable as a LAST resort
    Second Playthrough:
    - All bets are off. Complete the game as fast as possible
    - Max 31 IVs unless pursuing Hidden Power
    - I will be playing these runs at 4x game speed
    My footage will be edited to give what I consider a better viewing experience. This includes making cuts, fades, and adjusting the speed of the footage to match my commentary.
    I use a software called "PKHeX" to edit my starter, setting things like it's Nature, and IVs to be perfect 31s, or marginally reduced to give specific Hidden Power typing to optimize strategy. All of the Pokémon I use are 100% attainable in the base game. The software allows me to create my "perfect" egg Pokémon in a much shorter timeframe.
    PKHeX also allows me to set my Pokédex total to max after the Round 1 Elite 4. A requirement of Round 2 is catching 60 species and I am only interested in the potential of the Pokémon that I'm running instead of my ability to catch Pokémon optimally.

    The mudkip line is amazing like it is in Houen. Even though I was kind of surprised how close blaziken's finish is to Swampert's finish.
    The combination of water and ground is really good as long as it doesn't need to fight a grass types. That's why outspeeding was really the edge that Swampert needs to win effectively against Venosaur.
    And Swampert didn't need substitute in order to complete the round 2 league, which shows how good of a Pokémon swampert is really.😊

    I feel like this surprises no one. You might be able to have Blaziken take the lead if you hacked in their hidden abilities and/or allowed a lot of egg moves, but even then it would be dicey.

    My first thought is "Swampert would be set if it got Bulk Up". But then it would probably decimate the Hoenn games (Bulk Up tm is prize from the 2nd gym).
    Leftovers is a nice gain for letting it tank certain battles. With the amount of Gyarados' and grassy friends in kanto though, he probably likes his native region a little more 💦

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  Před 6 měsíci

      It was a marginal victory, and Blaziken definitely had the higher overall potential given the boosting moves. Water types were built to beat FR/LG though it feels. I have yet to find a bad one. Thanks :)

    @naraiceylob Před 6 měsíci +1

    Great video
    While you are probably tired of the gen 3 starters Ive already started thinking about the versus video.
    My money is on Blaziken. Starting with firepunch and higher stats should erase Marshstomps early game advantages.
    Blaziken also gets rock slide as a potential egg move while Marshtomp probably chooses curse (for set up but slowing down isnt ideal or stomp which will boost early game damage but have no medium term effect).
    Sceptile though could have a big improvment. Crunch feels like it could be the best egg move between all 3.

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  Před 6 měsíci +1

      My original plan was to run all of the starters, then pit them all against each other in a massive series. After playing Swampert, I'm not 100% convinced about Curse. It feels like the righy option, but the reduction in Speed/set up turns might dramatically change how it plays. Crunch on Sceptile will be incredible, and for Blaziken Rock Slide seems like a solid choice, but I've had a lot of success with Reversal in other runs.
      Thank you :) I'm looking forward to running them all with the VS rules... in time!

    • @naraiceylob
      @naraiceylob Před 6 měsíci +1

      @Eggsceptional agreed on curse and swampert. Feels like you would have to run it twice to figure out if it would work.
      Reversal was my second choice for blaziken but I figured it would only be used for a while before being dropped for rockslide in the mid game anyway.

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@naraiceylob It's true! With other starters like Charizard starting with moves like Swords Dance and Belly Drum I'll have to really be aware of how I want to structure the VS. Well, I'm going to explore HP Electric on Swampert anyway, so I feel like there's some wiggle room for sure for all of them. Except Sceptile. He gets a lane :P

  • @LI0NS0N
    @LI0NS0N Před 6 měsíci +1

    Swampeeeeert. I always preferred Quagsire over it, for ability, earlier EQ and obviously derp reasons, but this one rules. It's interesting that it ends up going mostly special while Sceptile uses SD and goes more physical when their stats aren't really intuitive for that.
    One thing: I don't exactly know the enemy speed stats, but you missed a lot of one-shots pretty closely and lost a lot of time to trainers using items then. Would a +SpA nature fix some of those? Or I guess routing in more resisted moves to set up K.O.s may also work. And, true, I had the HP Electric thought too, with all the annoying Gyaras running around. BoltBeam coverage is soooo good. Maybe one day you can come back and optimise this to the max, I'm sure it'd tear the game apart like hardly anything else. Personally I'd love to see that.
    Anyway, great content as always

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  Před 6 měsíci +2

      I agree with the weird flip flop in stats. Swampert honestly did both sides of a mixed attacker incredibly well.
      A +SpA nature would be nifty, but that Speed was so nice. Without the +Speed nature we wouldn't have outsped Agatha's ghosts, Alakazam, Jynx was close. Though it once again becomes a question of safety VS speed I suppose, hitting harder but being exposed to more damage. You make a good point!
      Electric/Ice coverage backed up by STAB Surf? There are few things more potent in the game I'd wager!
      I appreciate the input :) Thank you!

  • @jptheflipper3825

    eggcellent sir, as always truly eggcellent. Swampert did very well in both your runs, the lack of boosting move was a pain, I know how much you love them, but as we saw, it didn't really need one, I got to ask if you were to give it a boosting move for a run, what would you give it that fits in with its aesthetic, I'd say curse, even though what it really needs is agility. your idea of going with a HP electric sounds good, your mostly physical set with STAB surf was a nice move, but you could flip that and go mostly special with STAB earthquake, it would cover most of the game for you quite nicely.
    I can tell you one thing with its moveset options that might be useful, with only a few exceptions to the level up set, the Nidos make use of pretty much the same set, both special or physical. Swampert is such a beast, I mentioned it is the speed runners choice for emerald it is true, Scott talked about it quite a bit in his emerald run of it, but like in fire red, it really fulls off for the league and needs something to help it along and I have a feeling the Nidos will do exactly the same, although they have more coverage at least.
    so its gonna be the battle of the crabs next, its gonna be good, I predict oddly painful in places and a complete breeze in others for good measure. the stats are a concern, both are slow, hard hitting physical attackers with special STAB and boosting for more attack, I'll have to have a look at the movepools more closely to see what they got to work with, although I do think the dark STAB and typing will be useful for Crawdaunt in the same way steel will be Empoleon. I'm curious as to what you have planned next for the starters series, are you going to do a 3 way VS for the Gen 3 or are you going to start on the next trio and if so, which trio will it be, the gen 2 starters would be cool, I have straight up never seen the Gen 2 starters in any Gen 3 game, it'll be so awesome

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Something similar to that. OBS and making sure the capture is going well takes up almost a full monitor. Then everything else is pieced around the emulator yes :P It'll be an interesting re-design but I'm waiting on one last iteration of code from the man, Dan.
      I love how they went from giving starters almost no set up moves to "here's the kitchen sink". I saw you made it to the premiere! Thanks for coming :) I'm glad that the premieres don't result in a melty laptop at least.
      I have to wrap my head around the Gen 4 changes to Hidden Power still. Victreebel feels like a good one to really nail down some phys/spec memorization. It's true with Aerodactyl. And especially when you're going after it with a Bug type you're quite limited in your options I'd say. Oh man those early game Gen 2 Bugs just don't sound like any fun at all. I mean I know I say it all the time.. but I will run 'em all eventually :P
      I remember trying Toxic strats on Shuckle and they were really underwhelming. I could see them being good against a single battle (Champ), but against the league as a whole? I'm happy to keep thinking about it... But Toxic has let me down in the last. At least in solo runs.
      Swampert did both sides of the mixed attacker so well. It turned out that special was the way to go for this one but I'm so pleased wit the results :D Hmm a thematic boosting move for Swampert? Curse I'd say. Tanky, but slow.
      Fair enough! I was wondering about how viable I could make bringing in Rain Dance too for a little bit of boosting, but I feel like I struck a nice balance with Swampert. I'm looking forward to running the Nidos.. Well I'm looking forward to running them all.
      I was thinking that since the first videos I ever did took a stab at the unevolved Kanto starters I'd leave them for last. Gen 2 starters will be the next through FR. I haven't done a ton of research into the crabs as of today. Just the Kingler has SD off the start, and Crawdaunt gets it at 43 in the Fluctuating growth rate. It'll be a fun race I think there's no doubt. GImme that CRABHAMMER!

      @@Eggsceptional thats a hell of a set up you have for all this man, saying that, you did build it it all yourself for this. wow that did not take you long, you and Dan the man must be working overtime on it. I am curious, will the 2 of you ever do a joint video race or VS type thing, put your skills to the test.
      you're not wrong there, Torterra especially, just complete set up, if it had baton pass, it would be a great passer. it does seem to be mostly the water types that get the least of them, I think Blastoise gets none still (doesn't need them of course, but something would of been nice) Charizard is the fun one with that at least, we've spoken before of the potential VS of Swords Dance VS dragon Dance VS belly Drum on it.
      the premieres aren't so hard on my laptop, it can usually go a good 90 minutes before lagging and over heating, 2 hours in the winter (cold room). I like the premieres, good fun to have you in the chat with us as we watch.
      yeah, the Gen 4 HP change was a hit and a half, all special and fixed base 60 is quite a change, I maintain it is still usable as a move for most runs. I would say it makes for a better mid game move for coverage and PP of course, the league, not so much, unless you want electric for Gyrarados of course.
      Victreebel is great, might be my fave grass type for a run (besides parasect of course lol). its tricky to use as mixed attacker most of the time though, it has massive physical and special, but lower speed than what would be ideal so training is often speed based and that leaves less EV's for attack or special training, a specialized sunny day set makes its usable for mixed attacking, but it does take up a move slot for coverage and the option to boost sort of goes.
      I hate that aerodactyl so much, so many resets, in an ideal world I would of gone with HP rock on Beedrill just to deal with it in my current run. I hope my Venomoth handles it later.
      despite the bug gym in Gen 2, Gen 2 was not kind to the bug types, except the big hitters scizor and heracross of course. the ledian vs ariados would be a VS of which is worse. a thought, do a bug only team in SS to test them a little and see how they do.
      with Parasect and toxic/protect, you could hang onto the TM's until the the very end to see how well they work, R1 can be handled, its the R2 we both know that is the nightmare for that thing. I rarely use protect or Toxic, you should try it with Venasaur, leech seed and toxic is a great stally combo.
      Swampert did awesome, you'll see that with all the water starters I think, Faraligatr is a monster, not quite as bulky as swampert, but faster and the coverage isn't bad (you'll love it in Gen 4, it has dragon dance for an egg move) and hell yes curse is the one for it, it could really use swift swim as an ability for some speed. rain dance is a good option for some surf boosting, but its a move slot and for the R2 league, you need all the coverage and options as possible.
      the nidos will be awesome and I will stand by that statement forever, I think Queen might win of the 2 purely because of its bulk. I have a long list of notes and tips for both, too long to say all at once. I will say this though, don't evolve immediately.
      Fluctuating isn't that bad, I think Crawdaunt is still Scott's No.1 for Emerald, I'm not saying it will dethrone zangoose, but it'll come close, saying that, Kinglers better speed and Swords Dance will help it along to keep up. crabhammer is thematic, but its accuracy is bad, stick with surf once you have access to it

      @@jptheflipper3825 We haven't discussed doing a joint video as of yet, but I'm sure we're both keen to coming up with something fun to explore. It's been a lot of work, but it's worth it. I keep getting distracted from production though and need to really focus in on getting some content produced.
      It's true. I was thinking more about the VS series for the starters. I feel like I'll probably do the first run with Charizard with Belly Drum. I can always fall back on tried and true SD for the second run. It'll be fun to finally see that compassion that we've discussed so much before.
      That's good! Ahh good ol winter and electronics. Up to a point... Outside they don't last very long :P I love being in the premieres! It's tough though, going from stream to premiere and having to go back to these low latency fingers to communicate with :P
      I can see HP being just as you described - essentially a stop gap until better options come available. I can see HP Electric/Ice/maybe even Rock for the league being viable for many runners. We'll see though :)
      That's fair. I'm hoping that Gen 4 doesn't introduce a bunch of convolutedness to the run because the option pool expands, while also feeling like it's limiting. If that makes sense? Gen 3 will definitely be the test platform for that one.
      That Aero is nasty! Every time almost. I could also take a look at doing the Bug only run in Gen 3. Especially as the options for my overlay expand. I can really see where the lacking parts of some of the Bugs *cough* Ariados/Parasect *cough*
      I can see Leech Seed/Toxic being viable for a good staller. It's just a matter of being able to stall which we both know that Parasect can't really do. Especially against Fire types. Or Rock. Or Flying. Or Pokémon that use damaging moves :P
      Isn't that just the truth in every run though? There's always some coverage hole I'm trying to fill going into Round 2. Be it a type coverage, or speed coverage, there's always something that's lacking by the time we hit Round 2.
      I don't know.. early Thrash on Nidoking might be pretty awesome until you find moves to replace them with in the mid-late game. I can see Queen being much more consistent though because of her bulk. I'm wondering too if I should run them as a team? Well.. I'm sure I will in both formats eventually :P
      Oh 100% Surf is going to be used on both. Crabhammer is more of the "meme" type move for the crabs. It'll be an interesting match up for sure! I got a little other work done this weekend but I'm going to be starting their runs and editing in the next few hours :D

      @@Eggsceptional you'll figure something out to do together for a joint video, I would say make Pokemon a 2 player game with all double battles, you control one half of the team, him the other, sounds mad, but I've never seen it done and at the rate you are 2 are going, you;d have it figured out in no time. you're doing ok with the produced content, you need to find the balance of updating/upgrading and producing videos.
      that is true, you could always lose belly drum for swords dance for the 2nd run, you could also do it for the R2 in the 1st run if you really need to. a thought for you, when you do the 1st and 2nd run for Charizard, keep Belly Drum right up until the R2 league, make a copy of that save file and then face the R2 league twice, once with the SD and the other with BD, identical Charizards, one with SD and other with BD to give a true reading of just how well they do.
      its a low tech solution for some old tech problems. I think I need to look into something new for after Christmas though, I will miss the chunky keyboard though, most modern ones on a laptop are so light, so bounce or resistance, feel like I might break it at any moment. it can be hard to keep up with the chat and get your responses typed quickly for everyone, same at this end I assure you, you do well to keep up though
      agreed, HP will have its place for parts of runs in Gen 4 definitely, a good option to have until you find a move tutor that you can make use of, you'll have better coverage options on most runs if you can make use them in your runs, might be a time sink, but for some Pokemon it might be the quicker option. its always surprising what one good move can do for a run.
      not massively in Gen 4, most grass poison types got to make use of the physical special split and get access to certain coverage moves, x-scissor and signal beam become quite usable for some, Victreebel tends to do best, doing what it always has done, sleep, set up and then attack with STAB, the only difference now is that it gets to do dual STAB and can be either physical or special.
      the bug run would be very interesting to see from you in fire red, as a team, they function quite nicely, where one has an issue, the others cover, even without using HP. the question is what do you give yourself to start with, in R1, you have access to 5 bugs in total as scyther and pinsir are version exclusives, so starting with pinsir or something a Gen 2 or 3 bug would give a full team for the league, in R2, you can get Yanma, heracross, ledian and ariados and evolve scyther into scizor and you'll be glad to know shuckle and the pineco line are Emerald exclusive.
      thats entirely untrue sir, we move know Parasect loses to non damaging moves as well, Koga with toxic and stally strats are proof of that lol.
      so awfully true, although I will stand by my assumption that the Nidos can have perfect coverage, through R2 using a supply of TM's, that will be my last set of runs in Fire red and Leaf green before moving to ruby and sapphire and I shall proof it.
      the nidos would be perfect as a team, what set one lacks, the other can make up for, it will not be 2 Pokemon with 4 moves each, it will be more like one Pokemon with 8 moves and that is no small thing. here's the trick evolving them, Nidorino learns horn attack at the same level nidoking gets thrash, so evolving it as it learns horn attack gives it thrash upon evolving and it is the same with Queen with bite and body slam. there is another reason to stall evolving them, they evolve and they become ground types and instantly at a disadvantage to Misty and the rivals Squirtle (lets face it, it will be squirtle, it will do best against them)
      I wish you luck with move of the crabs, I think Crawdaunt might come out on top, but we shall wait and see

      @@jptheflipper3825 It's such a hard thing to do though because I'm constantly wanting to innovate and change things. I'm slowly setting into some solid templates, but there's been an astronomical amount of change with the channel in the last 6 months.
      That's a fair point I'll have to remember when I'm going through with Charizard to drop a save state at the start of the R2 league. It'll be a super interesting comparison. Just how much difference does +6 at the cost of half health make?
      That's fair, but hey, there's always going to be more opportunities to talk about anything that ends up falling through the cracks in the live chats/streams. Just stick the laptop in the freezer before every stream. What could possibly go wrong? Condensation? Never heard of it.
      It's true. It's kind of the like the debate between Mega Kick / Punch in the last premiere. Going for Kick might be the better solution sometimes, especially when it can OHKO when Punch requires two hits. Finding little optimizations like that in a single move choice, let along picking up something like Ice Beam for Swampert right? HP is reliably strong. Victreebel is a weird one but if it's anything like the first playthrough we can always rely on plot armour :)
      I'm sure there's some Bug that I can start off with that doesn't mess with anything too terribly. Maybe Yanma or something :P I'll have to look into it further - right now I've got crabs on the mind.
      That's very true. Paras will in fact die to anything!
      Fair enough! I had an interesting thought about running the Nidos as a pair, and how two of their greatest moves would be super effective against each other (EQ and Surf). Heh. . mom and dad are fighting again. Maybe it's a run where it's best to evolve King right away for Thrash. He then stomps the mid game as Queen remains patient, evolving later after getting Crunch or something. I know you've mentioned that one in the past.
      I'll give one small spoiler - Agatha gave a surprising amount of difficulty to Kingler.

    The Physical/Special split in 4G was really nice. I suppose if it wasn't done earlier was because of the data being too big. But i wonder why dark was Special . Why hinder a powerhouse like Tyranitar(well i might have answered my own question xd).

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I hadn't considered the data cost of phys/spec. But they did introduce the "contact" mechanic which kind of felt like the precursor to the split. I know what you mean! All Dark moves make contact and yet are special 😅 Thanks!

    I knew Swampert would come out on top but I was not expecting Rest to be such a pivotal move for it, still this run was amazing and it was so kool to see my 2nd favorite Water Starter go through one of my favorite games in such a fantastic fashion (my favorite Water Starter is Greninja if you were curious, I do like the ninja theme but it's mostly because it's a frog which are my favorite animal, also why I went with Venusaur as a kid) I always felt in Gen 3 Swampert is at its best when it leans into being a special attacker with Earthquake as a back up, although HP electric is an interesting option to explore especially in Emerald since Wallace also has a Gyarados though in that battle I think Ludicolo is more a problem so maybe HP Bug, Flying, or Poison would be needed in that battle.
    Also I always nickname my Mudkips Torvus after the Torvus Bog in Metroid Prime 2, it just seems like a kool nickname for Swampert.
    Can't wait for the epic Crab Battle!! Also idk if it's been suggested yet but it would be kool to see the Johto starters go through Kanto (though I feel for Typhlosion it would feel similar to Charizard for most of the run since they have the exact same base stats and worse for Typhlosion in the Round 2 league because of all the EQs)

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Thank you!! The Water staters have always been my favourites. I agree! Swampert felt like he was built to do well in FR. STAB Surf is so wicked strong, backed up by STAB EQs as well? Incredible!
      Torvus is an amazing name! One of my all time fave games is Super Metroid. I love playing it as a randomizer/combo randomizer with A Link to the Past :)
      I plan on running all of the starters, yes! I'll likely be continuing the series in early 2024. I have some other ideas I'm hoping to explore in December :)

      I usually pick the grass starters but there's been a few games where I pick the water starters. I started with Bulbasaur, Totodile, Treecko, Turtwig, Oshawott, Frokie, Rowlet, Grookey, and Sprigatito, where as my brother always picks the fire starters except for gen 4 where he picked Piplup.
      I didn't get into the Metroid series until they released Super Metroid on the 3DS eshop but after trying it out I was hooked, a randomizer sounds like so much fun.
      Can't wait to see your future content, on the topic of the Johto starters which are you excited to run first and which do you think will preform the best? I wanna say the Totodile line will do great since pure water is solid in Kanto, I wanna say the Chikorita will suffer like the Treecko line did being pure grass but maybe its bulk being higher will help out? (honestly I don't see it helping all that much but maybe it will place higher than Secptile?)@@Eggsceptional

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  Před 6 měsíci +2

      @@lumineinfinitussilverkagat8094 That's fair! I always tried the Fire starters because they always felt like the most "hype" ones, but in the end I always enjoyed the Water types the most. Metroid is such a great game. I'll be bringing it to stream eventually too! Once I need a small break from SS :P
      Concerning the Gen 2 starters I am, of course, most excited to play Feraligatr. I'm cautiously optimistic about Chikorita doing better than Sceptile. I'm hoping that the bulk makes the difference... but we'll see. Mono Grass has a rough time in the region that's for sure.
