    Just my observation.
    Most of this video and the comments are way beyond my understanding, but I have been dabbling with inverters for a few years now. We are completely off grid in Orkney, Scotland and have used a Powerjack 8kw for about 6 or 7 years. Works great, but thought I’d better get myself a backup. I got the identical AliExpress board to the one in this video and connected it to a big toroidal transformer. The sine wave is not as good as the Powerjack, but everything in the house works perfectly. We generally draw about 150 to 250 watts at 240v ac, but occasionally it goes up to about 5kw for a while when cooking or washing clothes. It runs 24/7 and has been “on test” for about 5 or 6 months. Very little heat generated, a little when the boss is cooking. 😋

    Ive seen 48V 10KVA inverter power PCB on ebay for only $217AU, not bad. Unlike most off the shelve inverters, These units require a large power transformer, to covert the voltage to service say 230VAC, this may sound expensive, but making an inverter this way is far more reliable, than the rubbish on the market costing thousands. Plus if anything fails its cheap and easy to swap out the invert board and of u go. You can choose what even battery bank capacity you want and its easy to make a massive UPS, you can add redundancy, add solar charging panels arrays. One trick for reliability is to never run the inverter at full current, use the limiting pots to protect the board. Another trick is to design the output transformer for high impedance, this is to reduce the maximum possible fault current.

    The inductor is far far too small for 150A hence the cover melting off, at full intended load determined by you the series inductor should only get warm. The weakness in the design is those tiny dc power decoupling electrolytic capacitors between the heat-sinks as the high ripple current is the killer they dry out go open and the things blows up in smoke. you can solder large caps too bottom of PCB for backup, and never run the board at full power.

    @mrj2848 Před 3 lety

    Great video but some critical errors you made there.
    1. Do not use the high voltage output of the transformer in centre tapped configuration for 120/240v output. There are nasty transients on the centre tap even when grounded. Use a separate buck transformer to get the 120v you need. I learned that lesson the hard way when most of my home electronics burned from the 120v output. You need to use an oscilloscope to verify a clean waveform after commissioning the inverter.
    2. Removing the small transformer from the board is not good since those long leads to the inverter board will introduce noise that messes with the voltage regulation.
    3. The inrush limiting toroid inductor is only needed for toroidal transformers. The softstart feature of the spwm card eliminates any Electrical stress during power up for El type transformers.

    Hello instructor,
    I saw your video demonstration and I want to ask you to teach me on how to use or connect an inductor to this type of Chinese inverter board.
    Please is the inductor connected to the input of the transformer, to the board circuit any how? Or there is strictly an instruction to follow? Talking of the inverter board in this video as an example, thanks Engineer.

    I'm interested in this approach, as I want to use a 36 volt battery and inverters for this voltage appear to be scarce and costly. I've spent the last few years repairing large-scale audio power amplifiers so this isn't too far from what I know well. I also have some very large toroidal power transformers which I can rewind.
    I'm curious if the input current is proportional to the apparent or true output power. I expect it will be the former, so I would look into whether shunt capacitors for my refrigerator compressor and whole-house fan will reduce battery load by improving power factor to near unity. Thanks for your efforts, de AC4AQ

What could be the issue while the out put can't go up to 200v. I used spwm module.

    The series inductor is to filter out the high frequency switching component as the inter winding capacitance in the output transformer looks as an almost short circuit where without it Hugh surge switching current spikes pass through the inverter and can even damage or blowup the power mosfets. Transformer core losses can be reduced by either using a CRGOS core or under fluxing the core by adding more turns for the same voltage. You need to wind you're own transformers to get the most out it but you will have an inverter for life not the rubbish on the market that ends up in the bin in less than 5 years and cost thousands. They key is you can scale the size of the inverter and service the unit yourself and save a fortune.

    • @erroneus

      yes, I had a 1500w cobra inverter (12v), it could run a 1200w kettle to boil water, but it couldn't take any capacitive or inductive loads. (would crap-out with a 600w digital power supply)
      high frequency inverters are crap for anything other than resistive loads, which makes them kind of useless for anything bigger than a laptop

      the board with controller was about 280, but it wont work without a big inductor and transformer, which cost about 300. I'm not sure what you are after, but generally, the cheap light-weight inverters are mostly mosfets, but they can't handle any surge current at all.

    Inductor size for 4kW transformer 48V?
    Secondary winding is 48V exactly.
    Is that a problem or not?

    • @erroneus
      @erroneus  Před 5 lety

      The inductor helps smooth out the switching noise and improves efficiency of the transformer. the voltage is not that important to the inductor, also, 48Vdc does not directly convert to 48V AC. but that isn't really relevant to the inductor, the value of the inductor is 4.7uH and gets hot because of the thin wires. thicker wires = more current
