    Taj is a treasure and his album with Jesse Ed Davis is what first inspired Duane Allman to play slide. Love the feel of this!

      John Ford Wow, someone knows their music history. Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder did indeed form a band called Rising sons when both were in their late teens early twenties. As far as I know they only released one album which is quite hard to get hold of, before going on to other wonderful things.

      Hamish Urquhart, the Taj Mahal/ Ry Cooder electric slide guitar arrangement of Statesboro Blues from the Rising Sons album is said to be the reason that Duane Allman arranged and played Statesboro Blues with The Allman Brothers.

    Last evening we were treated to Taj's great trio...unbelievable funkiness!!!
    I was trying to explain his use of the National, metal bodied resonator to a friend, mentioning Taj's Caribbean roots & the guitar's Hawaiian connection. Both their Rising Son bond, was also mentioned...

    I have a copy of Blind Willie McTell on the original, recorded in 1929. Great song.
    My favorite Taj song is his cover of Willie Dixon's "Built for Comfort".

    I read somewhere that Ry Cooder influenced Gary Rossington & Allen Collins of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd how he would just plug in and play that's were I learned of Ry Cooder .

      He influenced the Rolling Stones.They got him to play slide on Sister Morphine off Sticky Fingers,and mandolin on Country Honk,off Let it Bleed in the late 60's,when he was just out of high school.

      +Tim McCarthy Yeah, this is the PA mix, not the recording mix. Ry's amp is all that's need for the hall so his guitar is not going through the PA board or speakers.

      Well the video is called "Ry Cooder in Nashville" and the overall video and sound quality is much better -- so maybe this will help and maybe the sound man will redeem some of his value... Ry Cooder's guitar is unlike any other and the tone/sound is unique so some of his playing gets lost in the background (sorry for that)

      They don't make them like any of these guys are. Best music in my life. My only regret is I am just now finding out about Ry Cooder. He is the best musician I have eve heard. He has that "something special". Whooooh Ry Cooder is brilliant, champion, paramount, incomparable!!!!!!! None like him.

      He should approve it. Taj recorded it in 1968, and the ABB recorded it in 1971. Love both versions though!

      Jesse Ed Davis's slide work on THE first Taj album ( a gift from Greg to Duane ) is what inspired Duane to start playinh slide guitar to begin with.....Hence no Taj then prolly NO Duane as we now know him.

    Dang! Ry Cooder must not have been playing through the mixing board. If his part was as clean as Taj's this would be one killer cut... Pretty dang good anyway.
