The types of characters suggest it's Chinese and not Japanese, while Japanese Kanji is similar to Chinese characters (there are variations and some different characters).
创意天才 does appear to be the Chinese version.
Even though all of these characters exist in Japanese and 天才 does mean genius in Japanese.
But the first character for the creative part is blatantly a simplified Chinese character (you will never see this in Japan).
In Japan they used a character like this for the first character 創, it's very similar to the original traditional Chinese character (not simplified) except a stroke under the triangle area is different in the Japanese version compared to the Chinese version.
The second character used is the same in both Chinese traditional and simplified, but the Japanese don't use this character if they write out creative genius. The Japanese would write creative like this 創造的.

I took Japanese for like a year, but the reason why you think it's Chinese is because when writing Japanese there are three scripts, Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji. Kanji is used to represent a word or a concept which is influenced by Chinese writing, the writing on his face is in Kanji.
Those are *CHINESE* and they are not backwards. But at least the meaning was right.
