Ok, if you do not know, this is done every year on April Fool's Day. They did not do it this year because of Covid. This is their 'rival' band, Band-Maiko. This version the lyrics are in the Maiko dialect. Band-Maiko has a mini-album. It. Is. Fantastic. (Also, an inside joke is that Akane is always eating) (What Miko is writing in the beginning is 'World Domination')

The Maiko dialect is called the Kansai dialect and is the native dialect of Akane, Saiki and maybe MISA,.
They all generally speak regular Japanese normally, but Akane sometimes slips to Kansai when she’s excited.

*BAND-MAID* first album was supposed to be labeled *Masters and Princesses* but they were worried it sounded too much like Metallica Master of Puppets.
I guess the next BAND-MAIKO reaction will be "Gion-cho". In my opinion, it's even better than "secret MAIKO lips". Great reaction Mr. Rock N Roll!!

A Maiko is a Geisha (an artisan dedicated to traditional arts and culture) "in training". A full Geisha is called a Geiko.
This song was sung in the older dialect of Kansai common to Kyoto and Osaka but more specifically the Kyoto variation used by the Geisha. They have their own way of turning a phrase. Miku said converting the lyrics from the original "Secret My Lips" was "very difficult".
Kyoto is known as Geisha central and was home to the Emperor for over a thousand years and thus the capital until the mid 1800's. Band Maid forced heads to turn towards the older traditions and it was a good thing!!

Kanami's, (lead), computer plays the "Shamisen" plus everthing else she added to the track. She really is a GENIUS composer just like Tuomas ..... Miku may have formed the Best Rock Band at the minute but Kanami wrote the music :) (apart from the first two songs and Blooming) Who gives a f..k really they are collectively as you would say THA' BEST :)
That is Misa holding the Shamisen, I don't think she knows how to play it though as it is quite difficult to play and takes yrs to master. It was most likely added in a separate recorded track and added in production, not to take anything away from them in any way. Probably the best player in Japan playing in a modern fusion group would be Beni from Wagakki Band, she is a master of that instrument, regardless I loved the change of look for this video.

I've read that Kanami chose samples of the koto, shamisen, and wadaiko and placed them in BAND-MAIKO's songs.

I don't know what the Band-Maid are cooking right now but I think we will taste some delights in 2021.
I think Miku is a very determined girl, she said in an interview, while Saiki gasped without a voice, that she had created Band-Maid to rule the world, she wants Band-Maid to become the biggest and most famous band in the world, I think that Miku has a very hard head and maybe she can even do it.
We can only hope she succeeds!

I hope the show at Budokan is not postponed because of the freaking virus and they can deliver a Mega Heavy Show of 2 hours or more with acoustic moments in the middle, Kanami going crazy in some extended solo and duelling with MISA, Akane being Akane and the One and Only Saiki delivering like no one ... as for Miku... I have the secret desire to be surprised by a full guitar solo at some point but there's no rush, Miku is the reason why we all have Band-Maid in the first place.
Anyway, first thing's first: New Single and New Album - Another step towards World Domination!!

I own just a couple of their CDs, but I have the Apple playlist with every last song on it (It's about 5 hours, great for long drives :) I love the Maiko and was very said that the Covid ruined their chance at an appearance this year. I'm assuming it was covid.)

In Kyoto(not Tokyo..), the ancient capital of Japan, MAIKO were girls whose job was to add entertainment to banquets with dance and musical performances.
It's originated about 300 years ago, and the girls working in cafes at that time began to perform shamisen, three-stringed traditional instrument, and dance. Even today, they are still active in Kyoto districts under the strictest traditions.
Now, I think you got understand why they play as Maiko. It's very similar concept as BAND-MAID, isn't it?
1:08 and 3:27 The howling is actually MISA's voice. And her instrument that looks like a banjo is a Shamisen.
But you can hear some other Japanese instrument in the background. The Koto in front of Kanami,
the Tsuzumi in Akanes hands and the Shakuhachi in Miku's hands. All can be seen at 1:12

MISA MISA MISA! most people get the Shamisen (3 string Banjo type), Taiko (Drum) and the Koto (13 stringed instrument) but all the way weaving thru is the Hichiriki (Flute type instrument)

This version is better than the original. Released in 2018 as an April Fool's joke.
In April 2019 then "Gion-cho" - I think it's even better. Also found on the Band Maid official website.

April 1, 2021 JST. Just getting my BAND-MAIKO fix.
Band MAIKO is the first Japanese all ladies band that play modern instruments(minus the Shamisen and Koto)with their fully equipped KIMONO attires, pls correct me if I'm wrong. These ladies are ahead of their time, not just cute and beautiful but they're brilliant! Another good reactions dude 👍😀👍

I love this version more than I already love the original. The addition of traditional instruments and also the singing in the Kyoto dialect makes it even more interesting for me to listen to and gives the song, I think, a bit more personality. They have another video in their repertoire as "Band-Maiko" with the title "祇園町" (Gion-cho)". And unlike 'Secret Maiko Lips' it's an original and not a cover of one of their regular songs. 😉🤘🏻

The North/ Northwestern Europeans may have a boat load of awesome metal bands, Vikings and Nightwish which makes them Great, especially due to Nightwish, but the Japanese are just as great with their anime and bands like this. Kind of creates a balance of 2 Awesome poles... “Perfectly balanced as all things should be “ :)

FYI, actually this BAND-MAIKO part more like a "counter part" to honor the traditional side of Japan, in this case is Kyoto (the 'opposite' of Tokyo), this also the reason why they mixed the traditional music instrument sounds. maybe if you want to get deeper into this "phenomenal April fool", actually you gonna find out that these ladies are freaking awesome, I'd say especially Miku because she changed the lyrics by honoring/using the Kyoto dialect and word choices, IMHO, THIS IS INSANE!!!
also some scenes in this video there are some kind of easter-eggs to show the "alter ego" of each member though. anyway, I'm not sure what you meant around 3:50, but just to make it clear, I see it more like the power ranger formation, or in this case the power geisha, based on your screen/video at 3:50 the formation is (left-to-right):
- black geisha: MISA (who "altered" to do all the howling part and play the shamisen)
- purple geisha: Akane
- red geisha: Miku (it seems the color is based on the rose she wears)
- blue geisha: Saiki (it seems the color is based on the rose she wears)

If you haven't seen “Alone” by BAND-MAID yet, you should definitely check it out. AKANE’s drumming and KANAMI’s guitar solo on this song are my favorite.

the one on the left be MisaMisa ;) she's air guitaring the shamisen :D Akane is playing with a ko-taiko(hand drum). Miku has a fue/flute. Kanami on the right is in front of the koto/japanese harp.
You should see Akane now. Her hair is longer and she either dyed it darker, or let her natural color come out. Either way, she looks even more lovely now. MISA went and got a perm, Saiki let her hair grow out even longer now, Miku is...well...still Miku and still stunning, and Kaname is maintaining that girlish cuteness along with that girl-crush on Saiki. :)

I think i remember a comment of a japanese fan that explained Kanami added the traditionnal instrument with the help of synthe and re-recorded the song with a sound enngineer.
Even for a April Fool's Day, they did the best they can.

Band maiko was an April fools joke that turned into an album from what I read. I actually like this version of the song better then the original with traditional instruments mixed in.
Gioncho is band maiko original song, everything else they're covering band maid song and turn it into maiko style 😁

In this video there is also a small thing, at the time 2.45 - 2.47 Saiki is in front of Akane, Akane starts making faces as usual if you pay attention you can hear Saiki laugh while singing, they have fun a lot in concerts.
Akane's drums blows me away in every song. Could almost make an argument for worlds best but there's this 11 year old holding the title. Sos Japanese.
