I am 80, and I was always taught that Montains were measured as height above sea level. So I wasn't lied to.
Your not 80. People of that age don't use phones
@@jaycelobb6628 Many people use CZcams on their computer. And I know multiple people over 80 using the computer.
I am an alpha male
@@jaycelobb6628 No, people of that age invented and made what you now wrongly call phones! Your ‘Phone’ is not a phone at all but it is a Palmtop Spy Computer. Not related to mobile phones in any way other than the minor addition of a miniature mobile phone module. What you hold in your hand is a fully fledged computer with mic and cameras, spying on you.
It is as powerful or more so than your laptop.
Google says:
The first Palmtop PC was the DIP Pocket PC (aka Atari Portfolio) in 1989.
Later these were called 😢PDAs and were very much like the iPhone which came later. Probably called iPhone so it could be sold in Phone Shops to a wider customer base.
So you are holding a Palmtop Computer not a ‘Phone’ or even a ‘Smart Phone’ those are different devices altogether.
The clever computer technology you hold in your hand was invented, designed and built by very clever people who are now Old or Dead.
But Old people now are very tech savvy because were were there creating it. However these computers are now used to Spy on the gullible ‘Ignorazzi’ generation who can’t tell a phone from a computer.

Mount Everest is the highest peak when considering altitude within the atmosphere, and it feels the most otherworldly because it is the closest to the point where the atmosphere ends and space begins
Huge respect to the cartographers for completing such a mammoth task. Even today, surveying India is a pain in the ass. The Indian government employees who work to do census is more than the entire population of some countries.
I just want to know if Everest had an actual name the indigenous people gave to it before a European came along and named it after himself.

I think furthest into the atmosphere is probably best considered highest. Which generally means from sea level, since that's where the atmosphere starts and is our basis for our environment. So Mt Everest still holds it.
Thank you Quantum - of course it’s classified as highest peak, not tallest (and if so…misconstrued), and it’s important to know these measurements to make such a classification, which doesn’t seem to be considered in this video title (idk thanks algorithm…but I had to click as this title felt v misleading lol).
@@oliviabb73849 Thoughty knew exactly what he's doing with the title. It's what he does.
Though, what he states in the video works best in English, and other languages that have a bit of room to play with.
In Germany, unless stated otherwise, everything involving height is measured from NN (normal null), which is sea level. Something like Kea being higher will always be followed by "if we ignore the absolute standard". You can call Kea bigger, taller even, but you can't quite call it the highest peak
That and the fact that we aren't aquatic and so the part under water doesn't matter to us.
Not buying it. Does Olympus Mons not count as a mountain because there is no sea level on Mars? Which by the way is much taller than Everest.
@@jimmym3352 Good point ... but mountaineers aren't flocking to scale the lofty heights of Olympus Mons ... not yet, in any event. At some point in the future, if Space-X and others like them get their way, this will be an entirely different discussion though --- as your comment very clearly illustrates.
We could say Mauna Kea is the "tallest", Chimbarazo is the "highest" and Everest is the "longest to climb".
It isn't the longest to climb. There are a lot of mountains that has more base to summit distance than Everest
Wrong. Mt. Everest is not the highest from the ground - it’s the highest from the ocean.
So it has the thinnest air on top and possibly the coldest air too.
oh ok, thanks for the clarification
@@UnknownUser-ni9iz maybe the one with the least oxygen? but even if, we'd have to make actual measurments throughout the year for decades to come to an objective conclusion like that. and the longest to climb would definitely be one in antarctica bc there are only a very select few stations from which one can start at the sea border of the continent.
what i dont like is that all these measurments take an arbitrary point from which they start to measure. the 0-point of mt everest is obviously sea level, which can indeed change, even if it's more theoretical than practical. chimborazo's 0-point is the center of the planet which is pretty challenging and not too useful for everyday folk. and mauna kea's 0-point is where exactly? is it at exactly 4km below sea level bc who cares about good reasons? then we could just add 4km to mt everest, too. is it the deepest point of the oceans, the mariana's trench? again, we could just add that number to all other mountains, too. is it the point from which on there is a more or less constant incline of at least let's say 10° up till the peak of it, nevermind the water? this would make all alone standing mountains taller than mountains that are within massives, eg pretty much all of the himalayas, pamir, hindukush, karakoram, caucasus and alps, to a lesser degree also mountain chains like the cordillera.
in the end, we all have to admit that none of these alternatives make sense bc the earth's crust has a varying thickness, being much thinner under the ocean at that and we have no good way of finding precise measurments for all of the important mountains in the world. also, the earth's crust constantly changes by melting and solidifying from and to the mantle. the earth is oblate just like any other planet and so is the atmosphere and our oceans. when we measure at how many meters above sea level we are, we can make a very good estimate about temperature and oxygen content depending on the weather. that's why these measurments are important in mountain climbing and that's why we use these measurments to compare mountains to eachother. also for airplanes not to fly into them ofc.
it is funny to say that mauna kea is taller than mt everest, but it's also pointless. and chimborazo might be even more pointless. actual meters above sea level is where it's at for a reason, it provides the eastest and most useful way to compare them. if you're a big time mountain climber, you might just take a subjective score from tripadvisor or sth similar as to how hard a particular climb is. as for myself, i'm 99% sure that climbing many of the tallest mountains in antarctica is much more challenging, expensive and rare than mt everest, mauna kea or chimborazo, which has GOT to be the most objective way (or close to it) of measuing climbs for hardcore mountain climbers. well, short of climbing inside an active volcano mid-eruption lol
Can't surf Everest so Mauna Kea is bestest by a sixpacks lenght.
Denali is actually the most impressive elevation gain over a short distance, often referred to as "geographic relief." It rises 18,000 feet in about 10 miles from its northern base. That's about a 30° pitch on average. Mauna Kea rises farther above the sea floor (some 33,000 ft) but takes a far more gradual approach over about 60 miles distance to do it giving an average pitch of just 10°. That's a very gradual, rounded dome. The Rakhiot face of Nanga Parbat rises 23,000 ft from the Indus River Valley over about 17 miles of horizontal distance which is a mile greater than Denali's prominence but still a gentler slope.
I've climbed Mt. Lamlam in Guam (US). Although it's peak is only 1,332 ft above sea level, Mt. Lamlam's base originates at the bottom of Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, making it the tallest mountain in the world, at 11,530m tall. I thought for sure this video would have mentioned Mt. Lamlam, but it didn't.
I also thought Denali would be in the video. You climb 6,000ft more when climbing Denali, technically making it a taller mountain that is shorter in relation to sea level.
That was the first thing I thought having lived there almost 20 years.
but isnt all of asia, africa and europe just the base of mount everest? :O
Go to the bottom and climb from there!
Highest peaks above sea level?

Including the part of the mountain under water is like if you measured Everest from where it joins the tectonic plate. If the ocean weren't there it'd be taller. Yes and if we theoretically excavated 3km of earth from the base of Everest it'd be 3km taller. Can't climb that part.
Yep, incredibly stupid logic.
thank you! im outraged that there's not more people pointing out such a massive flaw in this logic.
We don't measure the height of trees based on how deep the root goes into the ground. Glad you guys recognized the flawed logic as well.
@@v-ia hdhd
I was thinking the same thing!!! 🙂🙃👍🙌
But why mauna kea is considered as beginning underwater instead of the island it’s sitting on beginning underwater? Seems like the only reason Everest isn’t considered starting underwater is just because the ocean is farther away, but at some point the earth under Everest IS starting underwater
Fr
You're correct. If Mauna Kea can use the part of its mountain that's under water, then Everest should be able to use the part of the mountain that's beneath it in the continent. Everest is the tallest peak
The distinction is, if you dropped a ball at the peak and let it roll how far would it go? From Everest it would stop on land somewhere but in the case of Manua Kea it would just keep rolling down to the ocean floor. Guam actually has a vote in this since Mount Lam Lam could 'technically' roll right down to Challenger Deep.
@@davidking3931 but it would go flat somewhere in the island, before descending again underwater, right? Or does it go (more or less) straight doing?
@@postone2821 In way of determining it, Everest is definitely the tallest due to what Mauna Kea is. It's a giant shield volcano. The bottom of the volcano is where the magma first started emerging from emerging from the bottom of the ocean in the area and started depositing lava to build up to form the island and its current cone. That by definition cannot be nearly as deep as the tectonic plate root that forms Everest.
The point of "highest mountain" is from sea level that's pretty much undisputed. That's because it's the main metric of where dry land can conventionally begin and thus the atmosphere can become thinner
The relative ratio to the core arguably doesn't matter, add on top the fact that the atmosphere stretches along the equator as well, so you'd need longer to reach space proper as compared if you jetted off from the poles.
The problem with this line of measurement is that it inputs other factors asides from the mountains themselves. If we talk about mountain to mountain, Everest is shorter than the Hawaiian one. The core is even more relevant, because that determines which is the higher bump on the planet itself. Mountains are geologic phenomena, and using an external factor such as atmosphere is a copout. You are physically closer to the cosmos on top of Mt Chimborazo than Everest, and if 2 people were standing on them at the same time, the one on Mt. Chimborazo would me much higher.
So objectively, Everest is certainly not the roof of the world.

There's something about this channel I can't describe in a good way of course. Whatever it is, keep doing it mate!
It's his ability to tell a story. He's top class at this... this is why the topics can vary so much and the channel maintains the quality... it's his storytelling ability that makes it amazing, not necessarily what he's talking about.

'Measure from base to tip' surely a great opening for a manscaping ad 😂
I've heard that Mount McKinley in Alaska is the one that requires the greatest vertical distance climbed in order to summit. If that's the case, I would like for this video to have included that.
well if you count whats under water, how do you know when to stop? where is the natureal place of "hey, this is the bottom of the mountain?", like the sea is when measuring peaks. plus, even if there was such a line, couldn't you technically count the depth of the waters around afro-eurasia into mount everest's height then aswell, meaning it is still taller than that hawaiian mountain
This is why sea level is used as the starting point. Those that argue against that, typically only argue for *one* side but not the other.

You missed McKinley. Mount McKinley, the mountain itself base to peak, not adding the range it sits atop, is the tallest mountain in the world that's fully above water. Every other mountain either cheats by using its range as a step-stool, or is underwater.
I was looking for this exact comment. By what most people think of as a mountain (big hill sticking out of the surrounding ground) I would most definitely say Mt McKinley is the tallest mountain.
@@knurlgnar24 yeah, single peaks not in ranges are very different, and far more imposing than one peak out of dozens.
Mount McKinley was renamed Denali in 2015. A more fitting name for a brutal mountain.
We didn’t even call it McKinley when I lived there in 2007. We loved calling it Denali because thats its name. Its definitely the tallest🤘
Yeah thought of this too, but I also read that the Rupal face of Nanga Parbat is disgustingly large, where on this certain side the base camp sits at quite a low elevation. I read the wall is 4500m, not sure how that compares to Denali, but that's more gain than Everest.

@Leandro Aude I'm sorry what ?😂
If you also measure Everest's height from the bottom of the ocean then it still beats Mauna Kea by a ridiculous amount. Mauna Kea only wins if one cheats and uses different rules for measuring the two mountains. And Chimborazo isn't the "Highest" it's the Furthest (from the core). Contrary to the end of the video, highest above sea level is the only measure that really matters at all.
@5:20 if we are to measure Mauna Kea from the bottom of the ocean, the perhaps Everest should be measured from the bottom of the land mass that it sits on, which probably has it's valley at the bottom of the Indian Ocean. As for Mount Chimborazo, try setting your altimeter at 6268 metres, then fly from Chimborazo to Everest, if you can safely make it over Everest, we will all know that Everest is not the tallest mountain peak, if you don't make it over Everest then, your family will (probably) get a lot of flowers sent to them.
Great video on how to critically think through a problem. I would only add that since the bulge extends to the atmosphere as well, the atmosphere would be thinner at the top of Mount Everest compared to Chimborazo making the climb more dangerous. It all depends on the reference of measurement, in this case the core vs crust level. Hail to the nerds.
7:22 Yessir, absolutely! Lolol
The video behind your voice is what makes your channel so much better than many of these similar ones mad respect for the work put in. Best wishes

Since the atmosphere and sea level also bulges at the equator, I'd say for all effect and purposes, Everest still is the tallest. Its top has the lowest air density, it is furthest up in the atmosphere.
well is it not the highest mountain then and not the tallest?
I would go by the altitude at the peak of the mountain.
@@oelewappert Which mountain peak has the highest altitude?
@@ChickSage the mount everest, but that means the mountain everest is the tallest mountain above sea level instead of the tallest of the earth right?
@@oelewappert I was thinking we should determine which is the "highest" mountain, because there seemed to be a lack of consensus on where ground becomes mountain, and this seems to be making it difficult to determine where the actual bottom of a mountain is found. Altitude, however, seems to be a clearly defined concept.
Your animations just get better and better. Well done!
Everest extends further into the atmosphere. So I would call Everest the "Highest in the World" and Chimbaradzo the "furthest from the Centre of the Earth".
I climbed the Chimborazo and came down so fast I got altitud sickness so bad i though i was going to die...it was a touristy thing so we got to the top minus 200m, nevertheless remains the most beautiful view I've seen so far. Laughed way to hard at that
If you're going to measure from there, then you have to measure Mt everest from the bottom of the tectonic plate that makes up the entirety of the mountain. It's silly to suggest that something is "bigger" when you measure from a completely different point.
First time seeing Thoughty 2 post in front of my face. Hilarious

I always had these "methods" of measruing in mind. But at the same time it was always about that "highest peak above sea level" that our teachers told us.
It is the most common way to measure elevations and hights I guess, since it is the easiest one.
"It is the most common way to measure elevations and hights I guess, since it is the easiest one." And also it is important to have a consistent standard when comparing things.
Reason why you don't also include the parking garages when measuring the tallest skyscrapers. It's from the ground level.
It's important to measure from sea level cos that's where we mark the boundary between earth and atmosphere. As we go up from sea level, we biologically feel the thinning of the atmosphere more and more. You would feel the farthest from your comfortable air pressure and O2 level on top of Mt. Everest. The peak of Mt. Everest is where you can get closest to outer space without stepping off of earth. It does not work in Hawaii cos the atmosphere doesn't know how much of the mountain is under the sea. It doesn't work in Ecuador cos the atmosphere bulges along with the earth.
@@masedub976 you’re right, which is why mountains being tallest, or some of the tallest, have been consistently measured from sea level. It doesn’t matter if the mountain is really tall when in comparison to the deep valley it inhabits…. It’s how close to the ends of the Earth’s atmosphere does the mountain reach.

Mauna Kea only counts, if you consider the entire island to be part of it. Chimbarazo is neither the tallest, nor highest; its base is simply the farthest from the center of the earth. Everest is only the highest, not the tallest because its base is also far above sea level. Finding the base of a mountain can be kind of difficult, and arbitrary, and thet's why we use sea level, but you certainly won't be climbing anywhere near 29,000 feet, if you start anywhere near Mt. Everest. In my understanding the tallest mountain is actually Mt. McKinley, in Alaska because it has the longest climb, from trailhead to peak.

Dr Tyson recently covered this topic on Star Talk, but I must admit that your video goes into much more interesting detail and is much more engaging to watch. Kudos to you for that.
Then you have to measure from the bottom of the tectonic plate. Just because one has water around and it's convenient for you to measure does not mean the other one is not going down.
And is equator higher than poles? That's actually a question that does not make sense just like taking equatorial bulge in to consideration for measuring mountains.

Interesting fact about Chimborazo. In the 1970's an Ecuadorian airliner with some 70 passengers disappeared without a trace (4 engined Vickers Viscount). Around 2002 or so, wreckage and bodies were discovered in a receding glacier on Chimborazo! I climbed this mountain in 2000. To think i was climbing right near 70 some missing bodies is kind of eerie!
oh yeah, one of the deadliest air crashes in history was in a location where the bodies were never fully recovered: Antarctica. Standard search and rescue was impossible. If it had been a warmer climate there might have been survivors, unlikely given the nature of the crash, but everyone living or dead froze solid within minutes of the crash.
how did it crash in Antarctica? Enh... the idea was tours by air. Let people see the majesty of antarctica from the safety of a jumbo jet. which went horribly wrong....
I think the tallest mountain on Earth is the one that has the most height based on its own size alone. Someone's height doesn't change if you're on the curb or on the street.
That would be Mount Denali
Yeah but that comparison is a little unfair considering you aren’t attached to the curb
This reminded me about the title of most poisonous snake, like, by which standards? Human deaths per year? Toxicity of the venom? Survival chance? Who knows.
I'd imagine lack of oxygen and temperature making it difficult to clime would be the main reason we rate peaks based on height from sea level
