    U should stay in area non tourist such as central Bali , eastern and northern Bali to get the truly magical vibes.

      Totally agree with you. The issue with for me was that as I work remotely I heavily rely on wifi and in those areas electricity tends to go out a lot or wifi coverage isn’t great (this is from what I experienced and form what Balinese told me).

    Moving to the US at 21 I thought I was gonna be rich in a few weeks, obviously that didn’t happen. Lol. Everyone sold America to me as this great amazing place filled with opportunities, but they didn’t tell me I would need to work 2 full time jobs, never see my friends, my check would always be equal to my expenses even when I did budget cuts. Yes, there was a major improvement in where I started and where I am now. But I genuinely don’t think I will be here for another year. I don’t regret the move because I learned so much about myself living here. But it’s time to move on. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience. One person’s nightmare, might be someone else’s happily ever after.

      I think a lot of people think the same thing about the US, but I don’t think it’s that the US is “selling it” that way, I just think a lot of foreigners perceptions of the US are influenced by old movies when it WAS a lot easier to get by and make something of yourself… not in the “few weeks” you expected 😁, but it was attainable… it no longer is.
      The “American dream” has become the “American nightmare”.
      I thought your comment was interesting and so true, I recently saw a video about illegal immigrants that crossed the border who are leaving and going back home because America is not what they thought it was & they said it’s easier to get by in the countries they were fleeing to look for better lives. I think that’s so telling of the current state of America.

    *To my Indonesian friends:* your country is beautiful and I am in love with the island of Bali. But it just wasn't the best place for me to live, maybe it's because us foreigners should only come to visit and not stay, who knows?. FYI, this video is only my personal experience and I hope you see it as positive, because most of the things I highlight here are the effect of everyone who moved recently. * Thanks for watching!*

    I agree with the rental part. The prices are insane and will be unsustainable. People who locked in a long term lease of10-20 years pre 2023 are very lucky. You simply can't get deals like that now in a desirable area. We are planning to move next year but are struggling to find quality accommodation at a reasonable price. When the Instagram model fad passes maybe things will return to normal but at the moment some believe they will be living in a Beverly Hills style mansion over looking the beach for $400 a month because that is what they are seeing on these completely staged Insta videos. Thank you for your honest appraisal.

    • @amindfulnomad

      I couldn’t have said it better, Jimmy. Honestly, the amount of IG models depicting a totally different reality is astonishing to me. I have no issues with Balinese charging more to live in their island, my issue is with foreigners still selling the “mansion by the beach for $400” idea 😅

    A lot of the things you didn’t like about being an expat in Bali, is the RESULT of expats moving to Bali.
    All the trash everywhere wasn’t an issue previously when there weren’t so many tourists and expats. The infrastructure was designed to support the population, it wasn’t designed to support the huge influx of foreign tourists and expats.
    The cost of living going up is 100% the result of foreign tourists and expats being there. With demand, prices go up.
    Foreigners aren’t really “contributing to the economy” when there’s a lot of them, rather they’re negatively affecting the economy for LOCALS/NATIVES. When you visit a place that doesn’t have a lot of foreigners, yes you are helping the economy, because your presence doesn’t affect them much. But when there’s a lot of foreigners, and the value of the money you arrive with and earn is higher than the place you visit is, you cause the cost of living to skyrocket for the LOCALS/NATIVES. If you think it’s expensive for you, imagine the nightmare you are creating for them, because their money is valued lower, they aren’t earning as much as you, nowhere near it.
    This is the kind of thing that causes diaspora of native peoples. It’s something foreigners need to start realizing and caring about, rather than just themselves.

    • @amindfulnomad
      @amindfulnomad  Před 3 měsíci

      I actually wrote something similar in a comment I pinned: maybe these issues wouldn’t exist if expat weren’t present. So we agree :)
      TBH there’s blame to share: expats should be mindful but some locals do encourage them moving there, they sell their ancestors’ lands or lease it for long periods of times, at least that’s what I saw. I love Bali and plan to go again but only for a few days this time around :)
      Ps: you edited your comment so editing mine too. Having lived there, I’ve seen locals encourage foreigners moving there and selling their properties for astronomical figures. So there’s blame on both sides. We do agree, mostly.

      I’m glad we “mostly agree” 😄 & Im glad you at least see there’s an issue.
      I don’t agree that Bali Natives hold blame however, because imo there’s a clear power dynamic wherein foreigners coming have money, and with money comes power. Also for Bali natives, they struggle to get by and desperation causes you to do desperate things, often times things you regret. Just because people who are struggling financially to feed their families, are desperate enough to sell (or lease) people their land, that’s doesn’t make it right, in fact it makes it exploitation of indigenous people.
      Yes, I often edit my comments if I see spelling or grammatical mistakes.

      @amindfulnomad  Před 2 měsíci

      @@The.Hawaiian.Kingdom glad we almost agree too! Although we fully agree on this last comment of yours: there 100% is a power dynamic and desperation does cause people to do things they may not want to do. All I’m saying is: I’ve seen them take advantage of the situation, but it’s true that for a lot of people it can be out of desperation and need. Lovely talking to you, I always like a good healthy debate! :)
