- A revisit of my past Monogram B-17G 1/48 scale Flying Fortress build & restoration. Will attempt to upgrade as well as enhance this kit. Wish I had a "Visible" B-17G kit with the clear transparent fuselage half.

The size of this fortress is enormous. I love all the details inside. Beautiful model.👍👍👍👍
Thanks Pierre, it's definitely big at 1/48 scale. The B29 is even larger. Glad you like the details.,🙂👍
I had this model as a kid...hours of enjoyment painting and assembling it...great memories...I do remember it was hard to find a good place for it and wound up hanging from ceiling in battle with ME-262 and mustang...great job and thanks for the memory jog.
Thanks Russell, glad the kit brought back good memories. This is an iconic 1974 classic bomber kit that is still available thru Revell. I also have the other bombers as well.
Wow , that's a great restoration of the B-17G from Monogram and I like very much how it looks after the restoration part 1. Thank you so much for sharing my friend and have a great time !🏆🏅👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤝🏻🎩👌🏻👍🏻
Thanks Ovidiu, still want to install the lights and motorized propellers🙂
Ohh the weathering fun you can have restoring this queen! She’s a great looking build!
Yes sir, great iconic large scale kit from Monogram. Only large bomber still being sold.
That is a VERY large plane! The detail inside is great David! Nice work back in the day 👍 Looking forward to the lights and the finished project!
Thanks Mike, this is the smaller of the Monogram 1/48 scale bombers. The B29 is larger.😧
Wow, my father flew in one.
Thank you for your service.
Thanks Andrew 👍
I built the same one David, around the same time you did, lol, thanks for the walk down memory lane, good luck on your restoration! Johnny
Thanks Johnny, do you still have your B-17G kit intact?
@@davidchin350 Sadly no, it disappeared decades ago!
This is going to be a great resto project. I am restoring a 1940 ford truck that I got at my model club meeting. The model was part of a fallen members collection. I will be checking it out. Thank you, David. It's too bad that nobody makes an after-market clear plastic half a fusalage.. They already have the molds. They could probably make them for the aircraft that has a lot of detail.
I agree, they should have an aftermarket clear fuselage half.🙂
Beautiful model David! That is a lot of great detail inside to have to be hidden 🫥! 👍😎👍
Thanks Jeff, it was great to see the inside again. Need to open it somehow.🙂
That was the kit that got me back into modeling. It's such a cool kit. You did an excellent job on it. I really love all your details. It would be cool to display it just like that.
Thanks I agree. Interior or exterior🤔
@davidchin350 with the interior showing. Maybe the wing attached on the finished side. Or display split in half?
Nice resto project, David. Look forward to seeing the progress and completion👍
Thanks Eric, it's going to be a long term project😊
Nice job on inside detail, that plane is awesome, it takes up alot of real estate, thanks for showing us!
Thanks, yes it is very large but small compared to other Monogram large scale bombers like the B29, B52 or B36
Nice you still have the parts. I save all my instructions to. I really like what you did to the inside. I would put it back together. Cool build David. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Mike, it was fun to revisit this again.🙂
I love the b17!! Nothing like repairing damage. Fun times ahead.
Thanks Rick, now I have to order the micro Motors and lights.
Wow David! That's an awesome plane! I think that would be an awesome feature to have motorized propellers! Definitely looking forward to the restoration!
Yes sir, it's a slow long project of mine, I think I located the visible translucent fuselage half I need.
@@davidchin350 Hey that's a start!
That's a cool looking kit, David, it's looking fantastic, that's gonna be a beautiful rebuild, brother!! ✌️😁
Thanks Stephen 👍
A good idea to restore and improve your cool model using today's resources.
Greetings and further much fun and success with this work, David. Joachim
Thanks Joachim👍
Superb model with most impressive details inside David, very impressive!
Thanks Phil, I'm trying to think of a way to display the interior.🙂
A great idea imho!@@davidchin350
Very nice David. Looks like fun. I like the idea of a cutaway version. Have a great week.
Thanks David, now to order the upgrade parts.
Cool restoration project, David. You did an awesome job on the interior. Making at least 2 pilot figures is a great idea too. I'd do various cut-a-ways to show off the interior details. Lighting the interior would make it even more visible through the cut-a-ways. Super project....I will be watching for updates. Happy modeling my friend.
Bill
Thanks Bill, I just placed an order for all the accessories.🙂👍
Very cool David!! Looking forward to the restoration!
Thanks Manny, now to order the parts.
@@davidchin350 Your welcome!! I will definitely watching.
Awesome.... Hope all goes well on the restoration of this great model.
Thanks John👍
This should be a cool restoration David, hope you're doing well. Have a great weekend coming. Cheers 🍻🍻 KC 🇦🇺 🤝 🇺🇲 🙂 😎 👍
Thanks KC, glad you like it.
This is a great model. It's worth the effort to make it even better. It has a very interesting interior. 🤜🤛🐭
Thanks, I agree. Now to order the parts.
Hi David, It's really cool. Have a great day.
Thanks for checking it out.🙂
What a great revisit to a very cool plane. Great idea to showcase all that interior work because it is really nice. Cutaway is probably the best way I could think of but honestly, I definitely defer to the aircraft experts 😊
Thanks Craig, some form of a cutaway is coming.🙂
That will be a great project and you’ve already made a great start with a surgical separation of the fuselage.
I’ll vote for one or two cutaways to show off they interior.
A far out and probably far fetched scheme would be to Insert several magnets and metal plates on opposing sides of the fuselage to allow a complete detachment. While I suspect it might be possible to find thin enough magnets that would fit, it would be a challenge to hide likely gaps in the seam.
Thanks Mark, have been thinking about magnetic cut away panels.
Sounds like a rewarding project David. You seem to have it well thought out too! The Flying Fortress is one of my favorite WWII planes, I have several hanging in the model room. You might have to consider the cut-a-way view, lights and motor will be a challenge then, running wires and such. I like what Your doing. Thank You for sharing with Us here in tube-land. I am looking forward to seeing Your work. Take Care, Be Safe, God Bless, Later
Thanks Russell, just ordered the SMD, Motors and wiring.
This is pretty cool how you are restoring this old build. What to do about all the interior detail is one of the great unanswerable questions in our hobby. Some modelers want highly detailed models, inside and out, and others do not see the value in details you can not see. I think the only way to be able to see the interior detail is to do a cutaway, as you describe. The Visible B-17 was re-issued in 2005.. 2006? something like that, but that is still nearly 20 years ago. I had one but I sold it on ebay last year. That would be the ideal solution to show off all the detail.
Thanks Kurt, if I had known about your visible kit I would have bought it. I may leave it in halves with spacers to see the interior. Now to order the lights and Motors.
Very cool plane a lot of nice interior detail. A cutway would be very cool to look at.
Thanks Kenny, just ordered the lights and Motors for it.
@@davidchin350 sweet!!
That's looking epic David!
Thanks John, now to order all those upgrade parts 💰 😟
It's worth it David for what you've done for the build so far. Looking forward to it. @@davidchin350
Very brave to undertake such a restoration but I guess you had little choice given the damage. Very cool interior.
Thanks Dario👍
Very cool, really cool opening that up. Cut aways with some clear packaging "glass" would be neat. Just a thought.
Thanks Pat, that is a great i!dea.
A great project David, I'm very interested in following your progress. Can you use some of those very small magnets to hold the halves together then you could take it apart whenever you wanted. The challenge there would be getting the halves to fit together without the seam showing too much.
Thanks Mike, I do have small magnets so I'll have large removable panels.🙂
Cool video David 👍
Thanks Paul, glad you like it.😊
Selected cutaways would work or just a collection of pictures prior to gluing the two halves together to show others the work you put in on the interior. Nice job on the navigator’s chart table!
Thanks some form or combination of all those suggestions probably.🙂
That's really cool David and I would do a cutt away ❤😊
Thanks Shawn.😊
nice revisit i would do a cut away keep them coming buddy
Thanks Gilly👍
Have a great day my friend
Thanks, you too.😊
This kit was 30% completed when I stopped and stored. Forty years later, 2018 returned to the hobby and completed it posed in flight on a stand. I added rivet detail, interior/exterior refinements, crew figures and thinned all the trailing edges on the flight surfaces to be more scale accurate. For a higher reflective bare metal finish I used chrome ink, AK Super Chrome that can be brushed on or airbrushed. There are examples of how it looks applied to aircraft builds on my channel. There is a new tool 1/35 B-17G being designed by ASKA Studios for Border Models with a possible release date in 2024 that will be a much better model to expose the interior so I would not put the effort into the Monogram model if that is a option for you David. I am not a fan of the Hong Kong 1/48 or 1/32 B-17s for accuracy issues but the interiors have more detail than the Monogram. There are limits to how much a scale model can do with functions. I build multiple of a subject to achieve that by having for instance a 1/32 Tamiya, F4U Corsair posed in flight another gear down with the wings folded instead of trying to make one model do both.
Thanks for your input. Just checked out your channel and like what you did with the Mosquito with exposed internals. I wasn't going for the shiny Metallic look but wanted a dull worn silver finish. I'll probably end up doing large removable panels.🙂
Very cool model. Yeah, isn't it cool to go back to old builds? I really enjoyed cleaning all my Blues and Tbirds. I actually think maybe leaving the "empty half" off and enhancing the other half would be cool. In any event; have fun with it.
Thanks John, have thought of leaving it as an open fuselage half.🙂
Great kit, there is a lot of details that I see you want to show . It takes planning and extra work, but I have done removable panels that I can place on to keep the dust out. You have some choices to make on how much or little details you want to show. I know your skills have improved, and this will be a major challenge. Best of luck on your decision, and, build/restoration.
Thanks Ed, now I'm thinking of not gluing but using some form of magnets or latching system to attach the fuselage halves so I can break it apart anytime to display the interior.🙂
@@davidchin350 Harbor Freight has a good selection of small strong magnets. Moly I believe. They can be a pain to position, but they hold the best. They should also form a strong seal to keep dust and debris out. Great idea, and a good way to show off your work.
David cool build got one in the stash never even opeu it.
Thanks Phil, time to break out the kit and get it started.🙂👍
Thanks for sharing u legend 👍 😊
Thanks for checking it out.🙂
Hello,
Very nice, thumbs up from me!👍
Greetings Seven🖖
Thanks Seven.
Would love to find a tin made air plane like this. Extremely cool plane david
Thanks, usually the tin planes are for playing so don't have accuracate scale details.
@@davidchin350 I understand. I just like the nostalgia of them and with kids they don’t break as easy that’s only reason. I build models though just usly give them away after building
@@davidchin350 I want to send you that 63 impala joker lowrider buddy. How can I
@@oldscoolcooldiecast1879 email me at dcdcdcx3 at Yahoo dot com. Or give me ure email address and we'll speak offline. Thanks.
That kit looks great for as old as you say it is. I want to do my own version of the aircraft you mentioned with the clear pilot side but they are kinda hard to find. My idea that I've been thinking about is to do just what you said and cut apart the pilot side of the aircraft as if it were a museum piece. Of course I work in 1/72 scale so I would have to scratch the entire interior. It would be a pretty laboris project but in the end I think it would be pretty cool.
Thanks Dirk for stopping by and the comment. I can see how the visible kit is desired for the clear fuselage half. This Monogram mold dates back to 1974 and still available under Revell. I also have the majority of the other large scale bombers as well. Have fun when you get to your build. 1/48 is definitely a step up in size and detail from 1/72.😁 One of the biggest dilemmas for military modelers is how to display interiors when they ultimately get covered whether it's a tank, ship or plane.
@@davidchin350 I'm almost done with my B-17 Black Bitch build and found that there is a B-17 group build just starting. I think I' going to join in. You can never have too many B-17s
Looks great David. I've been itching to do a big plane for a while. I wish there was still some 1/32 left.
Hey how you been? Been a while, hope all is well. I love large scale bombers. I think HK makes the 1/32 scale bombers but they're hundreds of dollars. Too rich for my limited budget. But for Fighters there is the Airfix Spitfire and the vintage Revells.
@@davidchin350 David, to much for me also. But you know we would buy one if we had the money. I'm doing David, Im still dealing with my cancer but I'm still buying models. I hope to build a few while there's time. There's never enough time, only what God gives.
@@TheBlueberry606 sorry to hear about the health issue, hope all works out for you.
@@davidchin350 Thanks David. I'll just have to see how many models I can get done lol 😉
I had this same kit.
Thanks Jeff, a classic iconic bomber still available from Revell.🙂
Very cool.👍
Thanks Mars👍 hope to see a possible plane build from you.😁
@@davidchin350
Yeah I goatta look for a cool plane.👍
'Amazing Stories' 'B-17'......might be on CZcams.
Thanks.👍
I've got Memphis Belle in the stash for over 30 years now. Decals are most likely shot.
Whip out the kit and start building🙂👍
I built this kit around 1980.
Thanks Harold, incredible that Revell still sells this 1974 mold.
Maybe you could try tiny earth magnets to put the half together. They are very strong and 1mm in diameter.
Thanks Gary, I'm leaning in that direction of magnets on removable panels.🙂
I have the same kit, and it woulde be very interesting to see how you make a cutaway, if possible.
Thanks I will try. It will end up being a compromise of interior access with some removable panel lines from the exterior.
Really nice plane, love the details inside, is there any way to hinge the side from just above the wing? That would give easy access to the interior.
Thanks Jeff, trying to figure out if I can hinge or have a large pull away section of the plane to display the interior.🙂
It think a cutaway would be nice David
Thanks Tom, a decision between interior and/or exterior appearance.😊
Nostalgic plastique?😳
Jman
Thanks Robert, vintage kit but Revell still offers this kit.🙂
Why not just get a new kit?
Thanks for the comment Rick. I actually do have another B-17G kit but since this one was my first I wanted to display the fuselage interior. Will probably do removable cutaway panels.🙂
@davidchin350 well it's always sweet stuff when you open up your old kits!
