Catcher looking and shaking his hand after the bullpen 😂 felt that 😂😂😂 5:17
Especially on the first warm-up curve 😂
That catcher looks like he’s about to die 😂
Fighting for his life
Facts! Ain’t no way 😂
I caught two specific pitchers in HS. I was a sh*t bat but I could call a game. Had one dude that put up 95-97 on the gun. He only wanted me to catch him cuz I wasn't afraid. It hurt until it numbed. You don't feel the catch so much as time it.
Had another that topped off at 83 Maybe. But he had a Butterfly Change(Knuckler) and a 12-6 Curve. That was a different kind of hard. You had to adjust to where it was going. On the curve especially, I just set up to block and scoop if I framed it low.
This guy would be a nightmare to catch. Just punishing heat and the curve hits 90. No thanks.
We gotta see more pens from this guy, his stuff is filthy
They signed him to the Dbacks Dakota Chalmers
I enjoy these videos so much. Great coach/player interactions.
I love these videos! The ball pop is awesome! That pitcher is in great shape! He looks more like a NFL qb than a MLB pitcher. Keep’em comjng!!
Most NFL quarterbacks aren't that jacked😂🤣
2:00 Daaaamn, that cutter was gross🔥
If only he could find the strike zone
How hard you throw?
He has 28 BBs in 23 innings this year in AAA. Common theme with these kids that go to Tread. Focus on velocity and throw control out the window.
This guy has amazing movement on the ball. Keep it up!
He’s a free agent because he can’t hit the strike zone. 20 BB in 15 innings at AAA.
but I can fix him!
he's got like a 17.8 k/9
it shows
He has zero control. The dude is just chucking it like he's at a state fair.
one word EXPLOSIVE
Throws an easy 94 for strikes and can rev it up to challenge a batter. He's got the stuff. Keep at it!
His change looked like his best pitch to me
he's a free agent cause he has no control
Someone tell this catcher to keep his hand down cus one wrong move with his glove that 97 is taking his hand off
I saw this guy when he was in Triple A Oklahoma City with the Dodgers
I wish this type of equipment was available when I played, it would have really helped. Approximately 40 years ago. The way my friends and I got better was to go play, either playing catch or in games. We would mess around with different grips and arm slots. All day every day we would be at it. Wake up, eat breakfast, play ball in some form, play a game with the team in the afternoon or evening, play more ball with friends until dark then repeat the next day. Our arms rarely got sore or worn out. When playing for the competitive teams coaches would have a radar gun. I was 15 with a fastball around 80/mph.
There is a difference I notice watching videos like this from my time on the field. We didn’t hit the weights near as often and we spent more time throwing. I don’t know if this factors into why injuries are much more common now. In the majors a complete game is now as rare as a no hitter. When my best friend and I just wanted to play catch it was from left field to right field. We didn’t hit the weights we built strength by actually throwing.
Anyway, fast forward many years to the present. I coach little league and love teaching how to pitch and use the methods I learned as a kid, no technology. If they have a hard time with control I tell them to ramp down the speed until they can throw consistent strikes and work up from there. I noticed this guy was kind of all over the place and you kept asking for more velocity.
Obviously you have more knowledge to pass on than I do but as an old school coach I’m confused with that request. Speed means nothing if you are going to throw mostly balls.
Why you said with gym has more injuries?
Because your arm can't handle the muscle power force of their arm throwing so they end up getting injured?but by just throwing your muscle will grow by throwing and you won't be exceeding so much power
@@Tomluke5823 I didn’t say lifting weights causes injuries I was questioning if it has something to do with players being so injury prone these days. Also using proper throwing techniques and mechanics will build strength and endurance in the places that are used for throwing. It’s all well and good to curl 100 pounds but your bicep isn’t a big factor in pitching.
I think repetition is the best exercise to improve pitching. Like I said, as a kid my friends and I played ball pretty much every day all day. We were always throwing, even on game days. I’m in my 50’s and considering I now only coach I still have a good arm.
@@MikeHart72 nobody here is focusing on curls lol, injury rate is up because pitchers are pushing the limit and throwing as hard as ever.
@@my2l I think you failed to get my point. Yes pitchers are trying to throw harder but what are they doing to achieve this goal…..weight room.
Pitchers used to throw 15 complete games or more a season and Tommy John was rare. Pitchers now hit the weight room and injuries are very common, complete games are a rarity. They should go back to basics to gain arm strength and endurance the simple way that makes sense, throw a ball, play catch, etc
@@MikeHart72 correlation does not imply causation, have you ever heard of that?
MLB pitchers also averaged 87mph 30 years ago, if you took any current pitcher, who averages 94mph on his FB, and told him to sit 87, you'd also see very low tommy john rate and they'd be more willing to throw 130 pitches, because they will be operating at 75% effort.
When you have 100 guys instead of 10 throwing 100mph and 20 percent blow out their elbow, of course it you'd have more guys getting TJs, the sample size of high velo guys is just so much bigger.
I'm sitting in my Lazy boy and the gyro @4:31 buckled my knees. Phillies are hiring....I heard.
Maybe if he threw strikes, he’d be on a roster.
I want to see more strike👍
That was absolutely NASTYYYY
Thought that was his arm whipping thru causing that sound but it’s his shoes. He has great torque on his release.
You mentioned his “plots” like vert and horizontal movement and how Dakota would have 16k/9IP. How does the axis of movement affect the pitch especially fastballs?
His vertical plot lends itself to more whiffs and strikeouts. Above average carry on the FB, a massive yet really hard curveball, and a hard gyro/cutter to split the difference!
That curve is nasty at 86!
Fun to watch but did he throw any strikes? Maybe go Chris Sanchez and stop chasing 100% effort and spin and learn to command the ball like a big leaguer?
Did you not watch the video
God damn he’s doing that is shoes?!? That is impressive
No command, no control, doesn’t matter how nasty.
exactly
Gotta do it on command.
Good thing no one cares about what you say signed him from this Training Center, Dakota Chalmers😂
Can we get more videos with the release camera?
The edgertronic footage?
I wish this tech was available when I was in school.
I think the next time this guy is in throwing his pen this catcher is gonna call in sick or leave the building.😮
We didn't ever think of mph growing up. If some guy threw hard we just said he could throw heat. Fastballs are the easiest things to teach a kid to hit .We just found a good pitching machine that threw as hard as the pitchers we were going to be facing and lived in the cages. Adjusting to breaking pitches or off speed is the hardest.
Did you see his curveball?
Yeah we had NONE of the advantages of players today. Even still I was fortunate enough to make it to Triple A (Gwinnett) before injury took me out!
I'm seeing a lot of this type of mechanics built to only try to throw an extra 5 mph but location in the strike zone is about 5-10% which would make a pro career last about 1 game, maybe 2 (if you could even get there, which throwing no strikes you prob couldn't). Then there is also the arm problems that have been increasing exponentially over the last few years using this type of front leg rotation recoil mechanics. So careful pitchers on what you allow mechanically.
He's been a professional pitcher for 7 seasons.
@@treadathletics minor league seasons with 184 BB in 240 innings at low levels including 9 stints on the DL during those 7 seasons (THAT'S my point)... and as a 3rd round pick EVERY team wants him to get to the big leagues to recoup their investment...yet 🤷
It IS a great accomplishment to even get as far as he did, and my comment wasn't necessarily personal to him, more to the style of teaching these kids are getting today, the front side right to left open up turn and recoil out of it that's hurting more players today than ever.
The ONLY saving grace is the amount of work players do now to be stronger and allow the stress to be supported better than in the past. But the movement itself while it might make you throw a few mph harder (on a faster differently calibrated radar system...but that's a whole other discussion of statcast), it also takes away control and adds injury a lot.
To be clear, he has only recently started training with us. The goal is to get him back into affiliated ball and obviously help him stay there. He's not going to get an opportunity by throwing 90-91 and filling up the zone. That's simply not how free agent signings work these days. However, we can try to help him gain/maintain velo, clean up his slider/cutter shape, and keep him in the zone, which is the goal with the slutter pitch they were looking at in this video.
Historically, cutter variants are easier to keep in the zone because of their tighter movement profiles and tend to induce more contact. That's the gist of what was being tracked during this pen and will be addressed and worked on throughout the offseason as he trains with us.
@@treadathletics good luck with him, it takes a lot of hard work, luck and obviously staying healthy and off the DL. Hope it works out.
@@nstycrvbud 90-91 doesn’t get you signed anymore, that gets you into college.
Why are you a free agent? Your arm angles and finish positions on breaking balls vs fastballs are wildly different even on 1st glance. To 99.9% of the population this is insanity… 97 to a big leaguer is just another day, have to bring more to the table than that. To anyone that wants to say I don’t know what I’m talking about, I was drafted in 05’ as a 6’4 lefty and blew my arm out and then joined the Marines. God’s gift will get you the looks, but it’s a bit of luck and ALOT of studying and practice that get you to that ultimate elite level.
And baseball isn’t even the same game it was 20 years ago. The sport is evolving at a rapid pace
Id take you 450 dead center fool
I never played organized baseball so please take this question with that in mind: that little hand-pump before he throws - could that be considered a balk or whatever it’s called? I never really understood the balk thing.
No, it's perfectly legal!
@@treadathletics Thank you!
@@treadathleticsI didn't think you could bring your hands back together after you break them?
Nice lip dude
Can he do it in front of 50k deck full
Or a cold rainy night in Stoke
Why does the catcher keep moving his glove last minute? Wouldn’t that pull the pitchers eye(s) away from his target? I know the pros might be able to get away with it during games, but this is bullpen, where he’s working on stuff. Not game simulation…
The catcher is also working on his receiving in bullpens. Tons of ocular research has been done and there's no evidence that the pitcher loses command if the target moves before the pitch.
Ball!!
The glove drop is an issue with most catchers. Subtle & small is good. These huge drop movements don’t help
Dude throws angry.
I wish more players would treat practice just like a game. You never pitch with your hat on backwards and you never pitch in shorts. You really should be dressed as closely as you can
to your game uniform. Especially at his level, every little thing makes a huge difference. It's not about improving ability at his level, it's about being able to precisely repeat the motion
over and over.

@@treadathletics I'm not looking for a job...
Amazing late break on that CB! He would definitely fool batters with that pitch! Only batter I can see holding off on swinging at that is Will Smith from the Dodgers. Other than that, he's got MLB potential!
Doesn’t matter how hard you throw if you can hit the strike zone.
That’s convenient wild, pulling that fastball elbow side with that much run , you don’t Have to worry about anyone hitting it, 97 91 cutty and that hammer curve ball holy shit uncle Charlie is grinning from ear to ear. What his sinker look like?
future big leaguer, calling it
Been in the league for years now lol
catcher is struggling lmao pitches are nasty
Actually though how is he a free agent? Sitting 96-97 indoors with good off speed. Has he been getting interest from MLB teams?
Zero command. Teams are willing to take risks on rookies with no command but filthy pitches. This guy has been in the minors for years and still can't throw a strike when he wants to.
Yes, he's had plenty of interest and threw for most MLB teams in his showcase last week. Looking to sign soon.
@@treadathletics That’s awesome, thanks for the reply.
The catcher not wearing the mask in the beginning was giving me anxiety.
And this guy only in the minors with 4.85 ERA
Goes to show how crazy the major leaguers are
Levels
most prospects do throw MLB level velocity but simply can't command their stuff... if he throws low 90s but can command his stuff, he would have been in MLB already..
@@SP-ve1im 100% because pitching isn't about velo only. This guy has no idea where he's throwing the ball and probably why he's been released a half dozen times already.
The pitcher eye backdrop is distracting
He throws hard, but it also looked like he hit the imaginary batter at least twice. Control matters. I'm sure people will hate this comment, so I looked him up on the draft report for baseball America: "He has walked 6.6 batters per nine innings in his minor league career and frequently misses the strike zone with all of his pitches."
That's why he is at Tread. It's his best chance.
As a former catcher, im glad i didn't have to play in this era. These kids are monsters.
tell him to tighten his glove hand to his body as he throws. he is wide open and it is affecting his location.

@@treadathletics If I were closer, I'd be in there. 🙌🏽 I can watch your channel all day. Great stuff!
this catcher is scared of the ball lol
Nasty stuff
this guys form is a thing of beauty.. perfection
The pure gyro cutter almost like a disgusting 90mph splitter, this guy is GROSS!
That finish, is why pitchers get cracked in the head and can’t make a play.
czcams.com/video/r8YRdZYDBVc/video.html
That curveball needed more spin efficiency than 51% with that high slot...
If he raises the efficiency, velocity will inevitably drop on the pitch. A harder curveball is going to be easier for him to control and is yields better results than a loopy efficient curve.
@@treadathletics What about younger pitchers? Is 51% on a younger pitcher a good number? I have students who throw nearly 100% spin efficiency on curveballs and those pitches have 20" of break. That was our goal to prevent injury. What is the ideal number for a pitcher who throws at a traditional 3/4 arm slot?
It's different for everyone, but the opinion of efficiency has shifted in recent years where it used to be geared to maxing out efficiency, when in reality inefficiency is very valuable as well! Here are a couple bullpens in which curveball spin efficiency with discussed and the relationship between efficiency and velo!
czcams.com/video/snOyRXCc89c/video.html
czcams.com/video/2LRKzJ9Yrzc/video.html
@@treadathletics Ok, thanks for your response. I work with young pitchers and we try to stick to the higher efficiencies with a beginner "football change up" curveball and for the ones who can throw a MLB grip curveball, I still try to stick to at least 75% spin efficiency. Otherwise we really don't have enough break in the pitches. We steer away from "slider efficiencies" (less than 60%, especially less than 40%) to avoid injury. It would be nice to have a couple of curveballs to choose from.
Of course! With young pitchers (depending on the age), it's pretty difficult to develop breaking balls of much substance. We don't train anyone younger than rising freshmen in high school, but with our younger athletes, we're not terribly concerned with pitch design. We like to focus on athleticism throughout the delivery, strength/power output, and simply getting comfortable on the slope.
For all of you talking strikes, take a look at that video from the side and 10/1 you will come back and go...damn
These guys always show these monsters pitchers. Non of them make the majors. LOL
Still impressive to make it to triple A, which he did
And made 2 mil in his career so I’d consider that a win
Y’all posty fans?
This guy can’t hit a strike if he has a gun to his head. That’s why he’s a free agent 😂
Velocity is important! Right now I can go the DR and find hundreds of kids that jump up there and hit 95-99 on the mound! But can they pitch every other day and hold runners on base! Can they throw strikes when behind in the count! Most of all how is there durability! I saw tons of infielders pitch during blow outs and ring up 95 and their arm was hanging for a week afterwards!
He threw 96 a week afterwords without pain. He's been throwing hard for years, hence why he was a touted prospect for years.
@@treadathleticskey word “was”. This dude gets crushed in the Show….if he can get it near the plate.
He has not pitched an MLB game yet, so he has not gotten "crushed" there
Free agent cuz half his pitches outside the zone
He signed a contract with the Dbacks after this pen...
Cya in the league soon
Might be ok if he threw strikes
Too many misses - needs work on consitency... great talent but after about 10 throws you can already tell he just doesn't have the control needed for next level
I think him working with this group and taking advantage of every resource available is a good indication that he knows he needs to work and is running through the door to get the work done. I'm everyone's biggest fan, and if he has the talent and the work ethic, then I'm hoping for the best!
@@arthurdavis9341 I would like to agree but I don't see any attempted correction in this video... too much emphasis on the radar. Not sure if it is just for the sake of the editing of the video or not though. Hope the best as he has the natural talent.
Well, he can’t throw a strike!
hes thrown more strikes than you lil bro
@@treydoesva maybe so but I ain’t make no CZcams video boasting it! Ooooh. Snap!
Kids having to work too hard to throw 96. Kid looks more like a quarterback. Some other lanky kid can come up and stretch out like big rubber band effortlessly and hit 98 .Like David bring down Goliath!!Strange how that is but it is!! When that happens you will say to yourself "Did he just hit 98"?From his motion I thought it was 75.though it did ring true when it hit the mit.
Who cares about numbers if they can’t throw strikes
How is he a free agent? Can't even throw strikes in a bullpen. Looking at his stats, it's no surprise.
Dood throws a hella fastball, but I just don't see the nastiness in his curveball like in the title. My 15-year-old has the same movement on his CB. czcams.com/video/WGm8ADAymUc/video.htmlsi=5-3Ofsy4KwlgJwiS&t=102
The amount of movement he gets at upper 80s velocities is very uncommon even at the big league level. Your son may have a similar movement profile, but not at 86+ mph
This guy is Unhittable

He's not a free agent. He's with the Dbacks org now
He threw two strikes

I can see why he is a free agent! His command is not very good! Give me an easy 88-89mph from a guy with command and I will take that all day over this guy and his Violent delivery
both of your comments are negative! this is a training session not a real-game situation you can’t base your assumptions off of this video alone!
They were pushing for velo throughout this video. U have to push for velo in practice to be able to ease off the gas in game and still be throwing hard. If everyone pitched like they were in game all the time nothing would change. I can’t see why a nobody such as urself feels they have a leg to stand on in critiquing elite athletes.
“Violent delivery” might be the most meaningless, nothing burger criticism of a pitcher you can possibly give. Pitching is one of the most violent movements in all of sports.
He will never get another opportunity in pro ball throwing 88-89.
