But is it all that bad? What's happening to the weather? And what have I learned (a Californian) about how to deal with the Dutch weather?

Dealing with dutch weather is kinda easy but you gotta invest in good rain gear or accept that you get cold, wet and slightly miserable. We're not made of sugar after all. Bring a waterproof bag too, unless you wanna haul wet rain gear by hand all day.
About the best thing about dutch winters are imo the increasingly rare snowy days, or the even slightly better frosty blue skyed days. Great days to visit a nature reserve or a park for a nice walk.
Right now i love the appearence of crocuses and sneeuwklokjes (snow bells?) as a reminder that spring is right around the corner. In a few months we all have lentekriebels (spring itch, spring euphoria) again!

Only a little more rain. What do also have more of are extreme weather events. Those things will only get worse. Wetter winter (more rain) and higher amounts of rain in certain time spans.
Same for the summer. Dryer summers and also hotter summers. Again, these will only get worse. Even if we stop with CO2, etc now. If we do stop it'll become less bad than if we continue though.

I’ve got a rescue dog from Spain. He was 10 years old when I got him, so wasn’t used to the Dutch weather. And he’s very quickly frightened. First he started to like the rain, but avoided puddles at all costs. Then after 3 years he walked through one, and liked it. I told him that he was now really Dutch. He loved snow right away.
But the funniest thing was when it hailed at the moment we went for a walk. I wanted to return, but he wanted to go. Outside he did his little rain dance, and then discovered it wasn’t rain. You could see it happening in his head. He turned abruptly, to go home.
He’s not a big fan of wind, he’s small and sometimes almost got blown away. Especially around my apartment building where you get this strong winds.

Being Dutch im obviously used to it, but I do really like the weather here. Well, "like" is maybe not the best word, appreciate is probably better. First of all, all that rain causes everything to look lush and green which is just nice. Secondly, the climate overall is very mild. We get maybe one or two weeks in the summer when its really hot, and the same counts for winter, we usually get around that much snow and ice. Its just enough to make summer feel like summer and vice verse. But the vast majority of the year the weather is between 10 and 20 celcius which is just a very bland but comfortable temperature all round. The wind however, I could definitely use less of that. Nice editing by the way!

0:49 - this is exactly what I meant with my previous post; "In the past" there were only winters like this... lots of snow... lots of playing outside, lots of time together on the (natural ice) skating rink, drinking hot chocolate. After hours of playing outside and making snowmen, warm up your gloves on the heater inside and quickly go outside again with friends. These are the best adventures and memories for many of us Dutch. Of course time changes, but if you didn't grow up with this or are nostalgic with it from your upbringing, you will have a completely different experience of this country during winter times. Winter times are the most beautiful nostalgic times ever. Sinds the c*vid measures, people have started to look at their own lives differently. And that means there was a lot of room for introspection. This country is small, so awareness has happened very quickly here. aware of the good times and aware of the peace of mind and hard work and hard enjoyment. I notice that you are very up to date with our culture in everything, but there is one aspect missing and that is the most crucial thing to really have fun in the Netherlands after the whole scamdemic and that is; the foundation; There is really nothing more beautiful than growing up in a country like the Netherlands.

When I was in Amsterdam (Zuid) in December, I struggled to get out of bed because it was dark in the early morning and overcast most of the day. I had to mentally fight to get on the tram to enjoy a few hours of sun in Amsterdam because my body was saying the day is almost over (as it was overcast most of the day).
Boy.... you sure know how to pick when to post topics. Meanwhile in Northern California this weekend...
'Bay Area was hit by a ‘bomb cyclone’ on Sunday'
'Worst of Bay Area storm yet to come: 'It's going to be dangerous'
We now have too much rain in the S.F. Bay Area and my power was out for 24 hours (Sun-Mon) 🌦🌧

In the Netherlands we are the best at describing rain, or implying that we went through rain.

I've been at both extremes. Made sure I had a flashlight (torch) to get down an unlit lane to a hotel in a green area. Being that was at 10 in the evening in June, it was a pretty dumb idea.
On the other hand, I came out of the Resistance Museum in Amsterdam in winter and the world was horizontal. Somebody shouted to me that the trams weren't running. So I walked keeping in the lee of everything I could and made it back to my hotel next to Vondelpark. Staff asked me how I got there as the wind was blowing with hurricane force. Every sort of weather can be enjoyed... Though rain and wind makes me want to be inside. After rain it is fun taking pictures (reflections) or just going for a walk. We use to get snow for like 12 inches in the 70's and 80's and temperatures down to -21 centrigrade (pretty cool).
But nowadays it is dry (ground water very low) or wet (had to detour my promenade since the river flooded) and all this in the same year.
One can enjoy the Dutch weather but I prefer 30 C in southern France over 30 C in The Netherlands, humidity.

And indeed it's raining more and more but I have learned to accept and enjoy cycling in the rain. Most of the times it isn't that bad anyways and when you get home you can always take a warm shower and put on dry clothes. But this also makes the summers way more enjoyable and something to look out for.

    2) Instead, buy a proper "regenpak", the suit that also comes in handy when sailing. - Bonus: when I invested in a really pricey rain suit, it didn't rain for the six next weeks.
    3) Apart from that, the Dutch soil does need quite some fresh water: to compensate evaporation, to prevent salt water creeping in, and above all to let our crops grow.

Seriously, central/central-eastern europe, Hokkaido, some parts of north-east usa have had the perfect 4 seasons climate. Warm summers but not hot, gloomy autumns but not too gray, white cozy winters, chilly fresh start springs. But climate change has ruined everything: summers getting too hot, autumns and springs are nonexistent because of the quick transition, winters are just gray with little snow.

If you ever travelled Scotland then you have experienced that it can be much worse. Driving along the West coast, I saw this front coming to me from over the Atlantic Ocean and thought that it would be raining soon. The Brits would say "after it rained it poured" or "it's raining cats and dogs". Well, sooner rather than later it went so dark that it seemed as if someone up there switched off the light and opened all the fire extinguishers in the world. Three days later it stopped and the lights went on again. The Netherlands has so little rain because most of the Atlantic moist falls out of the sky over our most Western Wadden islands. If we get 1 meter (1,000 millimetres or about 40 inches) of precipitation per year, then they may get 3 meters. Meteorologists over there may have a number nearer our 1 meter but it's like rel temperature versus experience temperature.

Not a bad video David. A view on Dutch society from a lighter perspective. You got it about right but all is taken from an American angle though, how you guys look at what people talk about, complaining and the weather and then implement it into American perception and (world) views. We simply don't look at life or the world from the same angle as Americans do and, for sure, we do not share the same values.
Lol. So American to make everything a condition or ailment and then come up with a pill for it, treatment or counselling. Not everything needs a label or sticker or a path to recovery. Yes taking vitamins is good, specially certain types during a certain period (and you forgot extra Vitamin C during winter), but so is putting sun block during summer, making your house earthquake resistant or don't built a wooden house in a forest fire area (this is specially for Americans).
In the Netherlands we are lucky we don't have earthquakes, tornado's and so on but we have rainy weather. It is, despite Dutch complaining about it, a part of life for Dutch people and not much of an issue unless you come from abroad. See it as having to pay taxes, wait at a traffic light when you are the only one waiting or getting older and your doctor telling you you cannot take salt and sugar anymore. Nobody enjoys it but you have to accept it "as is" and move on. All part of life... nothing that needs to be treated or someone needs to write a recipe for it.
Reality is that every country has weather and more or less rain and drought. Of course it changes over time or from year to year. The more you talk about it and the more it becomes an issue. At age 12, kids in the Netherlands get a new bike and raincoat and have to find their own way to school. And throwing statistics at facts of life doesn't make any sense. There is always statistics, they are always different and when used for predictions (that's what AI is really), they are never, ever correct. Just look at the American politics and the statistics and prediction business that fails year after year. Americans should learn to not live life through numbers and instead just live it. Statistics cannot be used to predict the future, for the same reason AI is merely a prediction model based on collected data, algorithms, logarithms and cookies and doesn't have anything to do with intelligence whatsoever. And the sad part is, statistics can be used to proof or assume anything.
You stated "crappy weather" but it really isn't. There is a reason Dutch agriculture is one of the biggest in the world. It's simply part of life that cannot be avoided. Imagine you are an eskimo (lol. YT don't know this word it seems) or riding a camel somewhere in the desert. The amount of rain being a discomfort or problem is an American argument but is merely a part of life in the Netherlands.
And we all complain, Dutch maybe a bit more about mostly insignificant subjects but we are at the same time a country that doesn't talk about politics 24/7, going on and on about Swifties or pretending that Barbie empowers women all of a sudden (while for decades it was seen as body shaming and creating an unrealistic self image). At least, we do not indoctrinate the crowds with unrealistic perceptions, accept what it is and move on.
And your remark that it seems that all Dutch people are in Spain in the winter is nothing less than ridiculous. Statistically (and you love that), it is not even more than 1 promille. You are trying to make an exception into a rule and that is very bad research.

There are two secrets to dealing with Dutch weather: first, get over it. After a while you just don't think about it any more, it just is what it is. For the natives this is easy because they grow up with it, but immigrants from warm sunny places will need time to adjust. Possibly a lot of time. And second: when the weather _is_ nice, be sure to take advantage. Go outside, go for a walk, go cycling, go to a park and lie in the grass with a book, go kick a soccer ball with some friends, have lunch at an outdoor café, whatever. Compared to what I saw living in the U.S. (NJ), the Dutch are much better at simply enjoying being outdoors.
