- In this video, we showcase the contrasting surfing styles of 4 surfers. 1 being a good surfer and the other 3 being your average intermediate surfers. We teach the importance of reading the wave and some key factors in surfing techniques that might help you improve your surfing.
Our head surf coach, Clayton Nienaber discusses techniques for better surfing by using the wave’s speed and lift to generate speed off the top turn. He compares the styles and positioning of different surfers to highlight areas for improvement.
Highlights
🌊 Utilizing the wave’s speed and lift allows for faster and more powerful turns off the top.
📍 Proper positioning on the wave and reading its energy are crucial for executing better turns.
🏄♂️ Surfing smart involves using the wave for speed and lift, and leaning into the turn for better control.
🔄 Committing to a bigger turn allows the board to fit into the curve of the wave, resulting in a safer and more controlled turn.
🌊 Understanding the bottom and top of the wave and practising appropriate techniques can help improve surfing skills.

A very, very rare quality of analysis that you deliver like your surfing. Effortlessly.
I am loving these videos of 1 on 1 with Clayton going super in depth
No hate towards Ant at all! I still love when they do breakdowns together and when Clayton is brutally honest about Ant's surfing because its relatable to an average joe like me
Expect more of both coming!
Crystal clear distinction between the three subjects. So helpful. Thanks.
Stoked to hear this!
Really enjoy this format. This Uninterrupted lesson was very easy to absorb. Thank you.
Thanks! Glad you're loving it
You break down the topics so eloquently. Great video, thank you guys.
Cheers. This makes so much sense. I get caught up the top a lot at Urbn Surf.
Love OMBE. Feel I’m learning more at 50 than o have in 35 years before. 😊
Ur one of the best surf coach and analist... greets from germany
thank you, bro, your videos is always super usefull, thanks againe.
amazing!
so helpfull, thank you!
Such a well explained vid. Love all the OMBE content. Love this format of Clay analysis against three average Joes. Please do another vid going backside.
I bought their 12 week program a few years back and it has been amazing.
Backside is definitely on our to do list!
Quality's getting insane! 🔥🤙🏻
Thanks mate! It's something we've been chipping away at and improving everything
First time I actualy see the notification. 🤙🌴
ditto
Great analysis.
It is very difficult for the intermediate surfer to understand what is he doing wrong and your explanation makes it perfectly clear. Thank you for your work, I have been learning a lot. It seems have I also have the same problems as all the mention surfers.
One thing I noticed when seeing this surfer’s (and myself) is that we all stand to straight on our surfboards, especially on the legs/lower body.
Any ideas/tips how we can fix this? Thank you!
Very helpful thank you, do you have tip or technique to get on to the front foot?
The problem for average joes like me is that when take off everything goes faster than I can asume.
When I finish the wave a lot of times I’m thinking oh shit I didn’t put my hands right or I didn’t put the knees forward or damn! I look down another time.
Great video
That was good. Intermediate surfers have a hard time thinking vertical and on unpredictable beach breaks it’s even harder.
Nice video with good information to be aware of. One question, what wave setting was this surfed in? 🤙🏽
So many counterintuitive things seem to be the difference between average and excellence
Question for another video : When I make my drop, should I look down the line ? or at the bottom ? because everyone tells me I should not look down at the bottom of the wave because im gonna nose dive, but then I struggle to go vertical...
🎉🎉🎉
Surfer #1 could be me. Not sure how to change though to be more in the pocket.
Excellent vid, thanks again! Just a question on the take off, to get closer to the wall for the bottom turn, is there an element of a drop/leaning slightly on tail so it hits first? I've had a few take offs \where I felt like I was about to nose dive going straight down and it felt like I was a little too much leaning forward for the curvature of the wave near the wall.
Where were you looking during the take off?
Glance down line, glance bottom turn location, hold look at lip where I want to go (don't worry I've consumed all OMBE surf tips by osmosis). I can feel the limits of the board rocker at this juncture (medium rockered board,) and have noticed advanced surfers almost air dropping/tail tapping the takeoff.

Are there any short verbal cues/mantras or visualizations i.e stay tight to pocket, Look up at lip, draw vertical lines.. that would help keep this as a focus point when surfing?
Sounds like you've just made a few for yourself there already! Whatever connects with you is the most important cue
Whoop whoop everyone get your biggest foamies out for Clayton 😅🤙
i dont think you could wrap a mid legnth like this you need to approach diffrently mybe i think explaining board choice vs critical surfing might add insight for people . awsome vid series mate!
Did you watch our video on Mid lengths?

The third guy - is he guilty of the surf skate wiggle after the first turn?
Possibly, but hard to say where that movement came from, looks like bad fundamentals and awareness of how to do those fundamentals.
47 hours before time lol
Good to see you here early! 😆
Grow your hair back Clayton you look like a salesman
