Here is the fortress church in Prejmer, thanks to which the town near Brasov was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
We head towards the porch.
Before entering the fortress, we buy tickets from a machine.
Through the colonnade we enter the 16th-century annex with a small courtyard. There was a municipal school, a bakery and a water mill powered by water from the moat.
Then, through the yellow gate building, we go to the oldest part of the facility, where in the center there is a church whose origins date back to the 13th century. Construction was probably started in 1218 by monks of the Order of the Hospital of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the German House in Jerusalem, also known as the Teutonic Knights. Several dozen years later, the building was handed over to the Cistercians.
The church dedicated to the Holy Cross was built on the plan of an isosceles Greek cross.
Originally, the building consisted of four equal arms arranged around a square, the center of which was an octagonal tower. Each arm consisted of two spans, one square and the other closing polygonal.
The church was rebuilt at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, when it was given the shape of a Latin cross by extending one of the arms of the cross.
The interior of the church is modest and simple. However, it is worth paying attention to several objects inside. The altar in the form of a Gothic triptych with passion scenes and early Renaissance stall seats come from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries.
In the 14th century, Prejmer lay on the route of Turkish invasions. After the decision of King Sigismund of Luxembourg, the fortification of facilities on the Brasov Depression began.
After many reconstructions, the citadel, built on a circular plan, had walls 3-4 meters thick and 12 meters high, bastions, iron gates and rising bridges over the moat. A guard road was used to supply the fighters from the battlements.
The wall on the inside contains 270 rooms on several floors. Access to them is provided by steps and platforms on the wall of the building. The chambers served as shelter for village residents and their belongings in case of danger.
Many of them have been made available to visitors. There are historic craft chambers, a residential chamber and a school.
In addition to the fire mouths built into the walls, the fortress had an extraordinary fighting device: the famous "Organs of Death". They consisted of several guns placed together and all fired simultaneously.
In the gate building, on the first floor there is another museum presenting the interior of a Saxon house and farm objects
