• Getting Ready For WINT... -~-
When Justin Rhodes visited Karl Hammer and his 600 chickens he shared with Justin how he fed all 600 of them. HOW? Well with compost! However, what if you don't have 600 chickens! What if your compost pile isn't that big? What if?????
Well here's a answer that can take 100 lbs of food and turn it in 300lbs of food!!!
WHAT?
From seed to feed on our homestead we grow our own nutrient dense organic fodder!
This really is a homestead SURVIVAL skill to learn how to do!
Farm animals from goats to chickens to rabbits all love fodder and will benefit from its nutritional benefits!
To create fodder you basically take your grains, wheat barely rye oats, and by setting up a simple fodder system (we use buckets with drain holes) within 5-7 days of watering you will have a easy digestible rich organic green food that the chickens will love.
Sprouting amplifies the nutrients in the grains nearly six fold and increases their digestibility, so you get more bang for your buck. Plus feeding fodder to supplement your chickens' layer feed reduces your feed costs, gives you better tasting eggs with more vibrant yolks, and increases their laying productivity with improved health.
How could you go wrong!?
So you dont need 600 chickens or compost to save money on feed. All you need is a bag of grain and some buckets
Starry will show you the proof is in the pudding as she walks you thru this very simple and cheap way to feed your flock!!
And dont forget fodder is good for any farm animal!!!

God bless you all !
I like your fodder system, Starry. I just happen to already have some 5 gallon buckets that will be used to implement your idea as soon as my drill is charged up. My chickens 🐔 and I 👩🏻🌾 thank you!!
Thanks for all the great information!!! I am listening to all your videos and getting great ideas. One of these days I hope to have chickens and maybe a little garden. I'm storing all this information up for when I get ready to start my little homestead. Love you have a blessed day

I am making mini-fodder for my little parrot (in teeny tiny cups). Thanks for the idea Starry.
This is SO helpful (and frugal, to boot)! Thank you!!!
great idea, I use to just throw seeds out keep the chickens in an area then move them to the sprouted area and just fed grain in the winter...now I can do it year round! God bless you Starry!
Thank you Starry, I have 19 chickens and have been researching fodder methods. This one I can do. God Bless you and yours!
So clever! Great thinking outside the box!
Good morning Starry! Have a blessed day.
This is the most user-friendly fodder system I’ve seen for chickens. THANK YOU! I’m excited to start growing food for my hens now.
What a great tip! Thanks so much!!! God bless you, friend!
since I only have 12 chickens, I was thinking of using the plastic shoe boxes from the dollar store or something like that...thankyou for your great tips!
OK now I understand why I saw you drill holes in buckets in a previous video ! Smart and cheaper than grocery chicken food . God bless you.
This was a great instructional video, I want to try fodder once I get my 6 chickens. Thank you.
Love 💗 your videos! Super informative and u have a wonderful personality also! Bless you!!
Brilliant Starry, i'll share it tho i know no one who keeps chickens, maybe it will reach some that do!

Thanks. May God bless you also. Happy New year...
wow..thanks for all that great ideas and info...i have about 22 chickens so may need a little bit more but love the simple and frugal ways for fodder so awesome thanks and blessings
your welcome!!!
great idea, Starry.... you think of everything! !
Gonna give this a try for my pampered hens...love the apron!
Great tip Starry!
My chickens love fodder. Its like a treat. I have only done wheat and barley so far That easiest for me to get.
This is mindblowing. Thank you
Very cool. I had been thinking about growing alfalfa sprouts for my chickens, but this seem like another good alternative.
God bless you, too. Thanks for sharing.
Brava, buen video y simple, entendì todo , sos muy simpatica y un ingles muy claro, thanks.
Awesome! I'm going to do it ☺
I love this...so simple, next to no cost to set up and definitely sustainable....you are my type of gal.
I have looked at many different set ups.....this by far is my type of set up.
We are looking to go on property with next to no income coming in and wanting to remain debt free....so this will really help all the while giving our rabbits, chickens and goats the nutrients they need.
I love your system. I watched other systems and could not set up the complicated systems. Going to go get buckets and grain! Thank you so much!!’
Glad it was helpful!
@@StarryHilder Hello and ty. Hey, do you move the buckets into the sun at any particular time? TY
Gonna Give this a Try !
We were just going to start making fodder this week. Very timely.
Beautiful!!
Thank you
Throw some grain seends on a patch of land. They sprout out and have a good grass patch for the chicken, especially wheat grass is very healthy
interesting ! gonna have to try this
Thanks for sharing
Looks like wheatgrass( didn;t know it had another name) I get at the store, we all love it, including my pets.Thanx Starry.LOL that is what I want my back lawn to look like:).
Moviestar Memories I have a guinea pig. Anyone know if this is good for them to eat?? I really want to grow Timothy grass for him. Thanks
Good info. 2) I will just say that the Carl video you mentioned was a system for a business, not just a couple on a homestead. 3) you should do a video on how you stay so dang energized, the rest of us need it.
Thank you...and how do i stay energized..bammm new vid coming soon
great info
Great tips ..thank!
you can use dish pans too
Thank you
good idea
Thankyou for the tip, I have 5 hens and 1 rooster so they will love this 😁 have you made a fly/maggot farm for your hens, bucket with holes hanging up with a small bit of rotting meat the flies lay the eggs in it the eggs turn to maggots and fall out the holes chickens eat maggots , or you can make a mealworm farm
And the smell?
@@0r807 the smell comes from nitrogen, if you cover it with carbon,,, old grass, hay, wood chips, whatever, no smell
Great Job,
what about the seeds at the lower buckets they don't need sun light to grow ?
So great!
Awesome....I clicked on here for the cute girl, but also learned something new to do for my chickens...thanks...💘
Lol me too
Another excellent grain for fowls is rye--which is also good for pigs!
Gracias😊
Thanks
Starry, what if we live in the hot state of Arizona? We have shaded areas to put the fodder buckets, but they will still get pretty hot. Can we still do this system?
Has the bottom bucket got holes in it. Thank you
Hi, thanks. I have a question pls, can i make fodder out of rice (palay) seeds? Bec we have plenty of rice here, we have rice field. It would be great if i could make fodder out of palay seeds. Thank you, more blessings !
Thanks Starry. I've read from other videos that for chicken, they should be fed with fodder on day 4. I can see your fodder goes to maturity of day 7/8. How true is this?
I'm going to do this today! We have 15 chickens and 50 ducks
do the buckets being stacked create problems for light getting to the seeds? How many chickens would say the three buckets you seeded feed for that day or days?
Thank you Starry! I think Justin should visit your place too! Give a real off grid home a showcase. 💜💚💙
Hahah not sure if he's like it up here..we are kinda crude:)))
I've only seen it on video and picture but your place seems to be more realistic in aspects of what and how off grid really is. My great grandfather and grandfather built a homestead in the 30's that is still owned by my family that has no electricity, water is heated in a black tank on the roof and gravity fed. The wells are run by a ram pump or hand pumps and lighting is oil lamps. Grey water is piped out for the trees and plants and sewer is a septic that does need pumping every few years. Cistern catches rain water and troughs direct it to trees and plants in addition to the grey water. Minimal garbage and compost is mandatory as the location is extremely remote and without trash collection. I lived that first hand, it's nice to see a realist show how it is. 😉
Yep, he seems to go to huge establishments with all kinds of stuff
going on . I like Justin, but Starry is more down to earth living like
me. I love Starry the bestest!
ahhh your the bestest to
~
Thank you :D
Starry, other then scraps is fodder all you feed? I'm new to chickens just got my flock this summer and would love some advice.
Good tip. Justin should really visit you guys would be awesome.👍
Will peroxide or vinegar work instead of bleach? Thanks
but can they live off of green sprouted whet or barley? or fo you still need to buy feed?
I'm new to the chicken world and getting my first set (10) this weekend. How long does one bucket of fodder last, just a day?
Curious how you stagger the fodder if they are all sprouting at once. It's not a continuous feeding system if you wait 8 days for the way you have this set up.
Do you leave the fodder in the pails without light?
Have you had issue with the barley grain having weevils?? If so what to you do to remedy that?
Great system. So, do the grains just grow in the buckets without soil? If yes, then that’s very cool. I wonder whether apple cider vinegar added to the water instead of bleach will help with the mould situation. I put a few drops of it in the chickens’ water container, and it sure helps, even though the container is scrubbed every day. I believe it also helps the birds against worms. Love your cats too.
Hi. So what percentage of the total feed should be fodder?
Will your chicken, s lay egg only from fodder or do you need to give them something else with the fodder?
Does the fodder provide enough protein and calcium for the chickens?
Thanks for the info Starry. I don't have chickens, but there's a feed store a block. Bet your chickens love the sprouts. Wonder if rabbits would like this.
@Dana Nelson Yes, rabbits love this as well.
nice.
I use kitty little trays, they're much cheap than using buckets
Can you feed it to laying hens
Awesomeness
Good evening ... Is cultured barley good for ducks
Will Justin Rodes be coming to see you on his tour?
I started doing this I am using 8 buckets 😀 my hens get fodder every morning along with feed and they don’t eat as much feed even though it’s there for them 😀
Danielle Terry: I am about to start growing fodder . I have over 100 chickens many roosters, pullets and hens. What kind of grains are you sprouting? How long to take to serve to chickens as a fodder. I has been trying to grow before and I failed. I am concerned this time . 💙 I think this method is good 😊 and easy . I hope I am successful. Thank you for you answer my friend.
Hi. You Tube University has lots of videos on this. Some use sunflower sprouts. I use wheat I buy in bulk from my feed store. This is an inexpensive way to do a fodder system. Best wishes
Did you ever expose the fodder to light?
So do you give this to your chickens as their only food source or do you give grain as well?
In an older video, you said 2x a day we got to water 3 gallon. In this one, once a day but how much water? Also in the older one, 1 cup of seed and this one is 1inch layer. I am doing this now but only 20 % of the seeds are sprouting and it has been 7 days. What am I doing wrong???
I started doing this but I am getting a lot of fruit flies, and the fodder is not growing evenly, about 40% of the seeds sprout, I am following everything on the video step by step.
Same for me. I was wondering if humidity plays a role.
hi how many egg they can produce by just giving fodder?
Wow! You just got another subscriber
Welcome aboard!
AWESOME
Lovely
Lovely
Great info. Starry do you do this continuously throughout the year? Thanks and God Bess.
it depends on what i have available...:))
nice
I'm a little bit confused. I followed up to separating the feed into the buckets with the holes in. Starry then stacked FOUR bins onto each other. Which one is the one with no holes? is it at the bottom to catch still dripping excess water?
Then you said to continue to water them each day. Is this in the same way you showed with water onto grain in buckets with holes, directly onto the floor... then stack them again somewhere cool?
Thank you Starry for your tips, this system would save so much money in feeding chickens and healthier for them. You really are a mine of information. Thank you.
leave all the drilled buckets with fodder stacked. The water will percolate down through all the buckets due to the holes.
Cool area helps keep mold from growing also.
Bonnie Lipke The no hole bucket goes at the bottom, you can reuse the water from the bottom bucket to water the seeds the next day and so on. Keep all the buckets stacked so you water all of them at the same time. You want the seeds damp not floating so just a litre or so to water them with I'd say. Hope this helps xx
do you supplement with pellets on occasion or just fodder?
And how long does this take? And how long can you use it ? And do u wash of the bleach later on ? Do you use a bucket a day?
agreed I was wondering if you applied for the farm tour!!!
