    Highlights should really show the Northampton pressure and Doris/Conan turnover at the very end. Huge moment. Northampton really fronted up, a genuinely tough side; we underestimated them, played in third gear, and just about got away with it. Not a bad thing to happen, because Nienaber is going to be cutting shreds off the lads for the next three weeks.

    Hats off to the saints.
    They did their homework and had a very good game plan.
    Constant pressure forced leinster to make mistakes and doubled up on our big men.
    The positives Leinster will take from this is that they still came away with the win after not a great game and missing some kicks.

    In their previous 2 finals, Leinster cruised through the semis and got beaten up by more motivated La Rochelle and Toulouse squads. The second half this afternoon was a proper wake up call - in so far as there will be absolutely no complacency against Toulouse/Quins (I suspect Toulouse - again). Ringrose, Keenan and Ryan probably available in 3 weeks time - guarantees better starting 15 and stronger bench coming on after 50-60 minutes. I fully expect Leinster to be on top form for 80 minutes in London, produce a performance similar to that against La Rochelle in the QF and add that elusive 5th star to the jersey! Anything less will be as disappointing as - well, the most disappointing thing you can imagine after making 3 finals in a row!!!

      Firstly, it is ridiculous that a one-off SF isn’t played at a neutral stadium, seedlings should only count for the round-of 16. The huge partisan crowd, played a massive part in the result, as Northampton looked and played full of nerves. As for the match, it was a shame that Northampton started so poorly, and made so many handling errors. If not, the game could have turned-out differently. I don’t think Leinster took their foot off the gas in the second half, as the result was still very much in the balance, it was that Northampton found their true form. As a neutral, I was a little disappointed by the match, as I expected a real humdinger.

    How was James Lowe's try not aearded as penalty try??? Ref was playing 'advantage' for a high shot on a Leinster player who was charging to the try line, when Lowe scored in the corner, unconverted.
    Those 2 extra points could have been crucial. For me, it was a clear penalty try.

    • @Thwlshmn
      @Thwlshmn Před měsícem +7

      It can't be a penalty try if you score, and the high tackle did not actively stop a try being scored, since James Lowe scored, therefore it can't be awarded

      Maybe learn the rules of 'advantage' ....

    • @normanstewart7130
      @normanstewart7130 Před měsícem

      It doesn't work like that. A penalty try is awarded if the attacking team is prevented from scoring by foul play, i.e. if they don't score. If they do score, then all bets are off. Of course this creates the perverse incentive where the attacking team is better off failing to score, i.e. sabotaging the play.

    Let's be clear, Leinster are a fantastic team and deserve huge credit for their academy system and they aren't responsible for the fact that the competition allows them to spend whatever the Irish union can afford however it is ridiculous that they aren't subject to a salary cap not least in the advantage they have against the other Irish provinces currently. Personally i thought Leinster were worthy winners however the officiating at the breakdown was incredibly lax if not incompetent, I'll give the officials one thing they consistently got it wrong right up to the final breakdown of the game which was clearly a penalty for Northampton . I don't want to be criticising officials as it's a difficult job but how can three on field officials and a TMO miss blatant penalty offences like playing a man in the air and both sides being offside, i only ask because this happens time and time again especially in European competitions. As an Englishman i was a bit surprised at how close Northampton got considering the way most of the game panned out as Leinster are clearly a stronger team and squad and looked in total control for nearly an hour. Northampton have plenty of bottle because a lot of teams would have gone away after their first half performance.

    • @scrumpyjack55
      @scrumpyjack55 Před měsícem +2

      Appreciate the measured comment. I agree with you on the breakdown, but it's not so much a referee failure as it is successful teams mastering the dark arts. It's a skill to con the referree, and eventually it gets to the stage like in that breakdown before the Saints 2nd try, where a Leinster player flops on the ball in the ruck and Raynal shrugs his shoulders, then gives a knock-on advantage. I'm sure Raynal will cringe watching that back, but it's just the effect successful teams have, especially with weak refs.
