"it's a 7am in the morning" feels so oddly creative. I don't get a chance to hear English through an ESL speaker often. It's always interesting. It doesn't hurt that it's Henya saying it too😅
Didn't this expression already exist in English? I know we can say that in French and it means the same thing. By the way, you'd be surprised the number of non-native English speaker there are in the Vtuber community: it's definitely not something uncommon, so I'm sure if you're even remotely interested in this community, you've already heard one other than Henya, you just didn't realize it.
I would like it on record that I think Henya is genuinely incredibly intelligent, and her grasp of the English language is *really* good for ESL. She integrates new words and phrases into her vocabulary incredibly quickly, and also understands the subtext under those words/phrases as well. Like, the fact that she cottoned on *so* fast to the fact that they’re talking about nsfw stuff and then went “it is a 7am in the morning!” Showing that she is great at reading context clues, even in another language, and has such a natural understanding of English phrases that she instantly picked the right one to respond with. Specifically a phrase that both expresses disbelief, but with a subtext that the thing being referred to is nsfw. And that’s not even counting the literal vocab words she was able to connect to the conversation, where she both understood the connection between “euphemism” and “innuendo” pretty much instantaneously, and was able to recall “badonkadonk”/“Bazongas” to connect with the conversation at hand. She even specifically remembered enough of the surrounding past conversations/their frequency to bring up a very valid point about how vtuber conversations are fundamentally different from IRL conversations. All of which she was processing *in real time* during the course of a conversation, in front of thousands of people, and was still able to both follow/contribute to the conversation as an equal participant, while still being incredibly funny. Just about the only thing she isn’t amazing at is pronunciation and grammar, but quite frankly, English is a bastard language that specifically makes both of those things nigh impossible to be good at, and while her speaking isn’t perfect grammatically, it is almost *always* understandable. And frankly, I’m pretty sure both of those are a choice on her part, it’s just easier to ignore some grammar rules and use your natural accent. Ironically, I think that’s why these clips are so funny/why people think she’s innocent. Henya genuinely has an *amazing* grasp of the English language, which is why it’s such a contrast when she doesn’t know colloquial euphemisms. She’s so good at English she comes off as a sheltered person with English as a first language, rather than an ESL speaker who is still learning her vocabulary. (Also this is slightly unrelated but Henya has excellent comedic timing, and is funny as *hell* which is an impressive skill to have in a second language. Add to that a degree of control over her Vtuber model that means her expressions are almost always accurate to the context of the conversation, and you get a compelling and excellent entertainer)
I remember when she was first on Speak of the Devil in her Pl she mentioned that she learned English first as a kid, then learned Japanese once her mom and her moved to Japan. As a streamer she had a basic grasp of English because she had already built a lot of the mechanisms to learn it, as she uses it more and more she become better at it building up from her childhood/schoolhood days to now. I notice most sings she tunes she starts singing just whenever are English ones, so I think she listens to a lot more English pop as opposed to Japanese pop
It's good for her to learn these words, because one day she'll have an English collab with someone and they'll just drop a ton of sus shit so at least this will help prepare her for it.
I know everyone likes having fun by not being direct with Henya about this stuff but I actually really enjoyed seeing these two just being straight forward with her, wish it would happen more.
Watching this just gave me an idea to help Henya to possibly learn all these funny synonyms and innuendos. Somebody with some Minecraft build knowledge and is basically a English teacher should build a giant museum or something that acts like a giant encyclopedia of words. She could go from room to room learning about all the different ways and phrases people use English in a "proper" form and the slang way to say it. As it is right now she's just getting random crash courses from different people lol.
It's not that Henya is innocent, but rather that she does not know sexual words in english. She would understand these things perfectly fine if you were to explain them in Japanese.
As someone who has tried to learn French, I can absolutely relate to Henya's problems with innuendo. That's a language where a simple "Thanks" -> "My pleasure" interaction can have an innuendo.
Yeah, they got all of the lyrics to U Can't Touch This wrong. It is NOT an innuendo for sex. The line is "My music hits me so hard". It doesn't get him hard. to be "hit hard" is for something to have a strong emotional impact on them. The whole song is just him bragging about how good at MUSIC he is, not at sex.
Then they didn’t get all of the lyrics wrong. They got one wrong. That one mistake completely changed the context of the song, but it was the one word regardless
to be fair to Henya, a lot of terms and phrases in the English vocabulary can be a double entendre. let’s just assume that she always means the seiso meaning and not the yabai meaning, unless she explicitly hints as such.
I miss 1 aand 30mins of her stream because of a sudden 5am meeting wtf. And this part is where i tuned in and henya reaction is like mine 😂 its only an hour of her stream and they are talking about bon3r 😅😅
I think it’s more hilarious when other people try to explain these things to Henya. It’s like they don’t want to say it out loud but they struggle to explain it.
Finally, somebody corrected Henya's understanding of badonkadonks because it has always been used for butts and not boobs. But it's not like she can pronounce it anyways lol.
Now teach Henya junk in the trunk and the meaning to it and teach her go down on someone and the meaning of go down on someone and the let her listen to Flo Rida's Right Round
