Tori Amos - '97 Bonnie and Clyde

  • This was requested by a youtuber who, sadly, missed the beginning of his 2001 Tori concert and thus also this song. Tori's not on stage while this is playing and the taper is trying to sort out his/her angles so it's not the most amazing vid but it will give you an idea of how the Strange Little Tour shows would start.
    If I'm not mistaken it's not entirely playback, Tori might be singing backstage. I don't know this for a fact but the lyrics sound different from the album version, she does an even thicker yobbo accent here. It might just be a different recording though, I don't know.

    This is so much better than the original. She really manages to capture an atmosphere and feeling that was totally absent from Eminem's version. Thanks for posting it!

    That is exactly it.
    i quote "Eminem's fans hate her cover. "That's the greatest compliment I've received," she says, teeth gritted. "My version invades his space, and men aren't used to feeling invaded, it drives them mad. Empower the wife, give her a voice. That's how you are an activist, I think. Is the song pretty? No, but I never said it was." Her blue eyes blaze. "Singing it is not a tribute." - Tori; The Times (UK), Dec 18, 2001"

    To the Tori Amos fans saying the original version by Eminem was just a catchy beat, you're clearly mistaken. What Eminem did in the song is nothing short of genius. He's baby-talking to his daughter after he killed his wife trying to explain the situation to his baby daughter in midst of myriads of emotions such as love for his daughter, the guilt, self-consolation and others. But, all the things he had to put aside since he didn't want to show the monster that he is to his daughter so he masks it with the rhythm but the rest of his mind don't join and hence, the eerie undertone. Captures the atmosphere perfectly. He doesn't try to exaggerate emotions like in this version which Tori tried to do(I don't hate this version). He gives you the realistic vision.

      @BryQan Před 8 lety +1

      +Ajoykumar Thongbam How is that genius? Rapping about killing his daughter's mother, her step-father and her step-brother and then disposing of the bodies with his daughter with him is crass not genius.

    • @JesseColton
      @JesseColton Před 5 lety +2

      Tori's purpose in doing the song was to make the disturbing aspects of the song more apparent. She doesn't have a take one way or the other on Eminem's choice to write the song itself, but she was disturbed by people enjoying his song and as she said "dancing with blood on their feet" not noticing the content of what they were listening to. so she made the song as eerie and disturbing as possible without changing any words to show that side of the song and present the song from the woman in the trunks perspective

    Funny you should say she sounds like she's dying, Valareeea, she recording the song in a wooden box to give the impression she was stuck in a trunk, so she could be the voice of the victim in the song, not the perp. She wanted to be the voice of the murdered mother, who has no voice in the song. She's definately somewhere backstage singing but the backing tape is going. AMAZING.

    @ieatpaste789 Tori changed the interpretation of the song. Its not that she is just singing one of his songs, she gave the song a different identity. We all speak in different tones and manners to convey our intent, we can all say the same sentence but how we say it can easily change its meaning and thats exactly what Tori tried to do and thats the point of singing a cover :)

    @vice2vursa "When looking at it through lyrical quality, you obviously can’t get over the content"
    I don't get your point. How exactly is one supposed to analyze/judge lyrics.
    Lyrics are typically used to deliver the message in a song. If you're suggesting that they're poetic to the point where one can ignore their vulgar/tasteless nature, I can assure you that there's much out there that trumps these lyrics in terms of poeticism.

  • @MrVidsAllDay
    @MrVidsAllDay Před 11 lety

    This is interesting, but Em's version ('97 Bonnie and Clyde) is my favourite, and much darker in my opinion.
    The Bass Brother's beat just has that dark, dreamy, surreal lullaby feel to it and the way Em softly coos the words to Hailie during the car ride is the most chilling part of the entire song for me. He speaks to her softly like a child, and makes her feel comfortable while she is oblivious to the fact she is helping him bury her mother and her new family.
    You just cannot top that.

    With the violins and slower tempo, it makes the song creepy like it should be. Eminem's version is kind of humorous. I bought the Eminem CD when it came out and I have every one since then, but I never thought about this song until I heard her version. You don't have to like it more than the original, but you should be able to appreciate her interpretation of it. Dominico1197 and letherneck14 (not a real Marine) should exchange phone numbers and discuss it. Why is everyone so combative?
