  • The Army is getting new uniforms that make look familiar. The olive green is inspired by the uniforms worn by soldiers during World War II. David Martin got a look.

I was in the Army from 1991 through 2015. We went through two uniform changes during that era. I liked the Army green uniform (more professional-looking of the two), but disliked the blue uniform; thought it looked like a parade-ground uniform. A few years before I retired, they gave us a survey about our preference as the future uniform. Hands down, I chose the WWII era uniform that the Army has now been accepted. I started out wearing the Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) for duty-use. Later, the Army switched over to the Army Combat Uniform (ACU) in the Universal Camouflage Pattern which shading reminded me of the WWI German army uniform; didn't like that either. I am proud to have worn the uniforms we had, but I would have really like to have had this new uniform.

Fun fact: If you collect and study WWII uniforms and other militaria, you'll find that the Army Green Service Uniform used to be strictly for officers during the Second World War. Enlisted men used to have a chocolate brown or olive drab Class A service coat w/ M37 wool service trousers. After WWII, they switched to the dark green Class A, then to the Dress Blues, and now we revert back to the classic AGSU, also known as the Pinks and Greens, which were worn by officers and generals during WWII. It was distinguished by the different trouser color and the olive drab service belt on the coat. The original WWII photos you see of enlisted men with their Class A's have a black leather belt around it supported by the hooks there used to be on the back of the Class A's. The officers had the olive drab gabardine (poly/wool) belt. As you can tell, I love to ramble about World War Two uniforms lmao

I'm a retired Army Active/National Guard Warrant Officer and possibly a little known fact is that enlisted soldiers were issued new uniforms, boots, dress shoes when they came out but officers and warrant officers had to purchase these items. There was a $100 uniform allowance every year, though while grateful to receive it, didn't go very far.
Hopefully for current soldiers, they'll stick with the uniforms currently in service and not change their mind again like they seem to do whenever someone up the chain of command gets a wild hair up their backside.
